Re: James DAWKINS & Susannah KELLER, Womenswold, Kent, England

Dear Helen Granville,
James Dawkins & Susanna Keeler were my great grandparents and Henry George & Ellen were my grandparents. My info is that Henry George was NOT the eldest child of James. He had a sister Alice J. born 1861 and 2 brothers Thomas(1864) & William(1866) as well as the siblings you mention. He also had a younger brother, James(1873) whom you do not mention.
Henry George had 3 children by Ellen and 9, including my father Edward Thomas, by my grand-mother Mabel Mullinger. Hence our respective family trees part company on the maternal side at this point. However, I've gone backwards 2 more generations from James to his father, my great, great grandfather, also James(1791)who married Elizabeth Brooks(1790) in 1818, and thence to his grandfather, my great, great, great grand-father William(1750) who married Mary(1750) in 1770. William came from Kingston in Kent and all the others from Womenswold until Henry George moved to Denton, Lincs. in about 1900, and then Bulwell,Nottingham. I would be pleased to learn if U have managed to get any further back than that so that I can progress(or is it regress) hopefully back to King David (kin of Daw, i.e. David = Dawkins)

I'm Sorry, but I have no information on the Dawkins line living in and around Warrior Stand, or Creek Stand, Macon County Alabama, in the mid to late 1800's?

After looking at John Dawkins b. 1805, and Hugh Dawkins b. 1857 census records from 1880, I noticed that John was listed as mulatto and John was listed as black. They are seen living next to William D Dawkins b abt 1850 who is listed as white.

William Dawkins - Union SC

I too am looking for the parents of William Dawkins (Carlise/Fish Dam/Union, SC). My notes show that William was an immigr from Scotland. He had a brother named Thomas Dawkins. William never married but fathered multiple children with slaves Rosetta and Miley Dawkins. Spencer Morgan Dawkins was the excutor of his will and did not abide by that wishes of his Uncle. Apparently, Rosetta and Miley Dawkins hired an attorney and filed a petition in Probate Court in Union county. They won the case and their land and all possessions listed in the will. I hope this helps.

In addition, I am looking for how Aiken Salter(s)/Sortor is connected to the Dawkins family. If anyone can shead some light on my quest, please help. Thanks.

Re: William Dawkins in SC

It 's hard to say. William Dawkins is a very common name. There were basically 3 set of different Dawkins's that traveled through S.C. Joseph Dawkins immigrated from England to Maryland in the mid 1600's. Some of His offspring traveled from MD to N.C and later S.C in the 1750's. Richard Dawkins immigrated from England and traveled N.C. and VA. I remember most of the Dawkins’s in Union Co. S.C came from Richard Dawkins. But my notes are back home and my memory is not always reliable. George Dawkins emigrated from England to VA around 1655 several of his offspring traveled to Newberry, S.C around 1770. My line, which included a William Dawkins, moved on to GA around 1790. I know there were several Dawkins's in Union Co. But I never connected them back to any of the descendants of George Dawkins (William Dawkins b abt 1730, George Dawkins b abt 1713, Thomas Dawkins b abt 1729) that traveled together to S.C. If you find any additional information please send it to me.

I can't find a link with my Dawkins family. However it may be worth you looking at the Taw message board. If you search for 'Gillingham' on that board there are a couple of references back in the 1830s. As Taw is a very unusual name and it is in the same town it is quite possible that this may be of help.

My paternal grandmother was Sarah Anne Dawkins born 01 Nov, 1849 in Gillingham, Kent. She married my Grandfather John Penrose in September, 1878. They had 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls. One of the boys was my father Ernest John b. 6-26-1886. They went to Canada in May 1908 with their youngest child Ada then 18 years. I can't find Sarah she was alive in 1910 Her husband died a widower in 1942. So Sarah must have preceaded husband John. Sarah's parents were William and Sarah Dawkins, but I know nothing any further back. Is this someone in your file? Elaine Ann Penrose Woolly

Just began working on genealogy and found your 2002 posting on the Dawkins. I believe your Donald is the son of my Pebbie Demele Dawkins (all lived in San Angelo). Pebbie was a brother to my g-mother, Luticia. My g-father, Elton Faucett, lived in San Angelo for many years, but my g-mother passed away many years prior to his moving there. Your Donald would be a cousin to my mom, Merle, and he had brothers named Willis Joel and Tommy if I have the right family.

I have found much info on Pebbie's father's ancestry and will happy to share. I am currently (without much luck) looking for info on Pebbie's mother's ancestry.

Taking care of daddy until the end and now mom lives with my husband and I. I'm just now getting back into it. Have you found Raeford's mom and dad yet?

Cindy

African American Dawkins from Newberry, SC

Desperately looking for relatives on my grandfather's side of the family. His name was John Dawkins (DOB 8/1912), the youngest of three or four children named Lillie Mae (DOB 1900), Martha, and possibly Richard Dawkins. I believe their parents names were Richard and Elmira (or Elvira) Dawkins. My grandfather and his siblings were born in Newberry, SC. From looking at old photos my grandfather and his sisters were fair skinned and could have probably "passed" for white. Grandfather later resided in NC and Detroit,MI. He had children in NC by his 1st wife Mary and children in Detroit by his second wife Georgia.

In 1880, they were in Warrior Stand, Macon, AL:

Mose DAWKINS abt 1848 AL/GA/GA B/M
Nancy, wife, abt 1853 AL
Silvy, dtr, abt 1871 AL
Mary L., dtr, abt 1874 AL
Kizzy, dtr, abt 1875 AL
Fed, son, abt 1877 AL
Emmit, son, abt 1879 AL (my gr-GF)
Frank, brother, abt 1859 AL
John, nephew, abt 1860 AL

Here's the family in 1870, same location:

Mose MARSHALL, abt 1840 AL B/M
Nancy, abt 1848 AL
Silvy, dtr, Mar 1870 AL

Three dwellings away is an interesting family of youngsters:

Nan MARSHALL abt 1845 AL B/F
Nelly, abt 1850 AL B/F
Chas, abt 1851 AL B/M
Levi, abt 1856 AL B/M
Frank, abt 1858 AL B/M (DAWKINS in 1880)
Mary, abt 1860 AL B/F
Dave, abt 1862 AL B/M
Rich, abt 1864 AL B/M (a DAWKINS gr-son of Sally Marcial in 1880)
Sarah, abt 1867 AL (a DAWKINS gr-dtr of Sally Marcial in 1880)
Eligah, abt 1869 AL (a DAWKINS gr-son of Sally Marcial in 1880)

Apparently, they were MARSHALLs shortly after emancipation, but by 1880, they chose to the surname DAWKINS. The father of Mose and Frank cannot be determined, but there are a few elderly men living nearby who may have been their father, grandfather, uncle or cousin. Next door to the family of siblings above was Dick MARSHALL born 1808 GA. He is listed with a female Urchey, born 1820 GA. Two doors away in the other direction was Dave MARSHALL born 1800 GA. He's listed with a female Salley born 1802 GA. Two doors from them was Sol MARSHALL (Sol MARCIAL in 1880) born 1830 GA. He is listed with a female Harriet born 1815 GA. Next door to Sol and Harriet was Mosely BRIST(?), 28, born AR. Mosely is listed with John MARSHALL born 1862 AR.

I'm going to have to go through and try to match every DAWKINS I found in 1880 with a MARSHALL born in 1870 in Warrior Stand, Macon, AL. This is amazing. I'm stil a bit awestruck (hee-hee).

Georgia Walker-Adams
