are you still researching this line? I am working on the Dawns who migrated from Campbell County, Virginia to East Tennessee. My 2nd ggrands are Edward F. Dawn and Mary E. Hardwick Hope Dawn. I've got good information on each of them from about 1830 forward. On Mary, I've got her genealogy several geneartions prior. I am stuck on Edward F.'s parents and siblings though.

He seems to be the grandson of John Dawn and Margaret Brooks, parents of William, Edmund, Mary (Polly), Sarah (Sally), Lucy, Margaret Jr., Rebecca, and Jane. William married Fanny Finch, and they migrated to East Tennesse. Don't know about Edmond (based on a legal document in 1842 which lists an Edmond among Margaret Dawn (Sr.) children, and lists an Edward F. Dawn as father of four girls, I have come to think Edmond and Edward F. are not always the same person). Jane married Blagon Finch, Jr.

I wonder if your John might have been William's son, and if Barnett might have been his younger brother. Just a theory based on birth dates, and that Fanny Finch Dawn's mother was a Barnett.

Any information you have would be appreciated.

McGill born 1896.

I would like to know if Georgia Dawn was married prior to becoming a McGill.

I would also love to know more about the McGills from Loudon, Roane and Monroe countines in Tennessee. Most specifically Frank McGill who was Carl's grandfather. Frank I believe married Sarah C. Bean of Rhea County, TN. Any help is appreciated.

Jason, Thank you so much for answering my post. I can see now that my James Hamilton Daun (Dawn) is not tied to your family. My Dauns were from India and in Burma as well and seems to be during the same time period. Through my reseearch of the last 10 years I have run across your Walter Dawn a few times and have copies of a couple of his documents (I think his death cert. and possible another) if your are interested. If so please feel free to contact me at hsmalone@aol.com

Thanks again,
Heather Malone

James Hamilton Dawn, James Dawn, R. Plantagenet Dawn

Hello, Looking for any and all information on the above. This family is actually out of India and Burma and looks like they may have landed in Canada or the US. James Hamilton Daun b. 1867 in Bombay, married Evelyne Ada Wilson in Burma in 1892. Their son, James Dawn (somewhere along the lines the spelling got mixed up) looks to be born around 1907 and R. Plantagenet about 1900. I believe all in Burma, however they often just listed England as well. It looks like the younger James Dawn arrived in Canada around 1928 and his brother R. Plantagenet was already there.

I'm a Dawn from TN. I also have an old typewriter rendered piece of paper from someone in my family about our family. It states that the "earliest information on the family is in Holland under the name Van Daughn. Around 1600 A.D. they migrated to Scotland. Then in the early 1700's they migrated to North Carolina. Then at the time of the Rev. War in 1775 they changed their name to Dawn."

I have been researching this family for a number of years and have enjoyed the assistance of others, both on and off this board. I do not profess to be the most knowledgeable researcher but will do all I can to see that you get what assistance is available.

Rules for using the board are brief and simple. Please enjoy it, be courteous to others, help where you feel that you can, be patient with newcomers and above all please stay within the Rootsweb guidelines.

IMPORTANT:
Please, please, please, always post your requests with any other surnames highlighted in capital [upper case] letters in the subject line as this makes it so much easier for readers to spot likely matches and actually read your message.

Lets get the board going again with a general 'where I am back to' in my research.
Hi Allan
I believe my husband's family has many Dawn members in common with yours - descendents of Thomas and Ellen Dawn. Thomas born in 1844 in Bath, Somerset and Ellen in Ireland (possibly Dublin) in 1842. Their daughter Rebecca born 1871 in Liverpool is my husband's great-grandmother.
Would love to hear about the other Dawns.
Helen

It can be seen at http://web.ukonline.co.uk/sarah.j7 and I would be very interested to hear from anyone who may be connected to me. This is an unusual surname and as a result of our ancestors being thus named both my father and I had/have it as a middle name.

I just obtained information that came from one of my family members in Tennessee that our line is related to the Ohio and Arkansas Dawns.
Dawn

Here is my family Dawn line: Doctor Ferdinand Finney Dawn, wife Elizabeth Hill Dawn. Their children - Edward Lindsey Dawn, Maurice (aka Morris) Theodore Dawn, Mary Alice Dawn, and Ferdinand "Roscoe" Dawn. They resided in Tennessee for the most part. Doctor Ferdinand was born in Virginia. I have information on most of the family from the Doctor to present. I'm looking for Doctor Ferdinand Dawn's siblings and his parents (generations before him). I seem to be at a dead end. Doctor Ferdinand Dawn was born in 1844. If this is your family, please let me know. I have more detailed info. on my family. Also, I try to make notes on most all Dawns, as believe many of our lines will eventually cross. Need help on your line, let me know. I might have jotted something down about them in my notes. Also, our family stories state our name may have been different - Von Dawn (Daun). Thanks a bunch!

Re: DAWN Family

I only had the notes from the 1870 census, when Charles was a child (age 16). I went ahead and started searching for you. Here is what I found - Leonard E. Dawn was born 10/1/1878 in Georgia to Charles H. Dawn and Lovinia Elvira Tinsley. Leonard was married to Ora Cooper. They were married in Spalding, GA. You can find Leonard (spelling Lenard) and Ora in the 1900 census- GA. Birth on the census states Lenard was born in South Carolina. The GA info was obtained from the Mormon church records. I would tend to believe them more than the census. Head of Household in the 1900 census is Ora's mother L. Ella Cooper. I did not research the Cooper's. You can also find Lenard Edward Dawn under the WWI draft records for 1917-1918. A couple of interesting notes made: 1930 E.L. Dawn, wife Ollie and one of their daughters named Ora (most likely after her grandmother - unusual name). This E.L. listed was born abt 1900. This could be one of Lenard's sons. Also, In my old notes there is another Leonard Dawn born abt 1827. His father was Levi Dawn and Mary Ann DAy. Levi was born 8/7/1804. His other children were Elizabeth A., Rufus S. Edward P. and Julia M. Many families in that time period would name their children after their brothers, sisters, parents, etc. Charles H father was Edward F. Dawn born abt 1803. Gut tells me that Edward F. and Levi could have been brothers or some close relation (Edward and Leonard names are repeated for each of their families). Good luck and let me know if I help.
Re: Barnett Dawn

I have some informationm tracking your line, as my Dawn's came (unsure if originated) from Virginia. You will find Barnett and Kesiah in the 1860 census under the spelling of Daun. Barnett died abt. 1875. They were married in 1816 in Roane County, TN. They are listed in a 1840, 1870 and 1880 ( Spelling for her in 1880 census is Kezia. She is listed as widowed. The Head of Household is Henry A. McCart. Relation to him is listed as Grandmother). There is a family tree someone has completed on Kesiah's line. Her father was Private John Holloway. Her mother - Rebecca Cavett. John Holloway's father was Squire James Holloway ( who was in the Revolutionary War). Most of this information was obtained from the FHLS site and some from Ancestry.com. All can be verified thru records.

Re: dAWN Family

I have been researching the Dawn line also. There are many Dawns and I'm beginning to believe that many of us are linked to this same line. My Dawn's came from Virginia. I had the same 1870 listed. I also had in my notes the following: There are 2 Edward F. Dawns (1) senior and the other Jr. Edward Snr. moved to Tennessee and had Edward Jr. (This info. was obtained thru the FHLS site under their birth records. List child and parents) TIn the 1880 census Arkansas, Madison, Hilburn. This census reflects an Edward F. Dawn born in Virginia and his Spouse Mary E. Dawn (aka Mary E. Hardwick) and daughter Joannah (age in this census for her is 30 which would put her birth date the same as your Johannah). It lists head of household as Joannah's husband David Williams. I also have jotted down Edward F. Dawn married to Mary Hope on 5/21/1840 in Lynchburg, Va. Edward Snr. was married to Mary E. Hardwick....maybe the true name was Hope and there are record errors(?). Margret M. Wilson is Edward's Jr. wife. I hope this helps with your line. I will be posting another query for my line. Hopefully they cross.
