David Owen Dawsey

I am trying to find out who the parents of David Owen Dawsey were, hopefully documented. He was born abt 1800 in South Carolina and died abt 1870 in Hancock County, MS. He was married to Emily Goodson.
Also, if anyone knows who this Dawsey line in the U.S. started with and where, I'd sure like to know.
I am trying to help my daughter document her paternal grandmother's line. She was a Dawsey and was born in Louisiana. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Kathy

Re: Dawsey's

Seeking families descended from heads of households living in Horry County area, South Carolina in the first three censuses of the United States of America (1790, 1800, 1810 or earlier). It is well known that families traveled together and intermarried. By joining DNA studies we may be able to uncover links that have all but vanished. There are DNA tests for direct line male descendants called yDNA tests that trace direct male lines. There are direct female tests called mtDNA tests that trace direct female lines. And most recently there are FAMILY FINDER tests that locate people of any gender with sufficiently close DNA markers to indicate fairly close cousinhood between individuals in the study.

For information on such tests check any reputable DNA lab.

If you already have one or more DNA tests available and have ancestors in Horry County area prior to 1810, please consider joining the Horry County South Carolina DNA group.

If you do not yet have DNA tests, consider getting one or more. These can be obtained in a strategic manner to maximize the information—such as convincing a male direct line individual such as your father or brother to give a DNA sample and doing as many tests as possible on that individual. I have been lucky enough to convince two male second cousins, my father, and my maternal uncle to join. That means I am able to tell when someone is kin to one or two which line the match might come from.

Let’s knock down some brick walls!

Julia Norton
Coordinator, Horry County South Carolina group
Member Hawkins group
Member Norton group
I have tried to contact those 2 individuals for more information but have been unsucessful thus far. That is why I decided to post the query directly. I know your in-laws very well as Arlis and my father, Barney Dawsey, were first cousins. I would be glad to share any information that I have. Carlisle

Dawseys Titus Co.TX 1860

We have a relative, John Leonard Holder, that married a Winnie Dawsey around 1858 (per the 1860 census she was born in GA). In the 1860 census for Titus Co.TX. Margaret Dawsey was living with John Leonard Holder and Winnie. Margaret was 17 and was born in GA.

John Leonard Holder later married Irena Brown. It has recently come to my attention that Irena's brother, James M. Brown, married Maggie Dossey (per a Brown family Bible). In the 1870 census (Titus Co., TX), his wife, Margaret was 27 and was born in GA.

I believe Margaret Dawsey from the 1860 Titus Co. census and Margaret Brown from the 1870 Titus Co. census are one and the same. The Brown family told me that there was at least one other Dossey girl that married into the Brown family, Tempey.

Does anyone know about a Dawsey or Dossey family living in or near Titus Co., TX around 1860?

Tell me what you'd like to know and I'll try my best to figure it out. I don't know alot about the Dawsey's in my family. My grandfather had lots of brothers and sisters and I've only met one of my Dad's cousins and none of his uncles or aunts. They were from Texas. I believe that my great-grandfather was french(could be wrong on that part) and black. I thought he came from Florida in the 1800's but I've been told that I was wrong about that.

Deidra

my gg grandfather was David C. Dawsey who married Emily Goodson McQueen in Lowndes Court House, Alabama in 1831. our research shows that his father was James Dawsey and grandfather was Joshua Dawsey. this is information gathered from wills and censuses. this set of Dawseys settled in Alabama for awhile then David and Emily moved to Mississippi. do you have any records of David C. Dawsey or Dorsey?

I agree we are all working on the same thing. Maybe one of us will come up with something. It's like our gg grandfather just appeared in Alabama one day and married Emily Goodson McQueen after her husband died or she divorced him. We know the rest. Just can't get back from Alabama. Keep in touch too.

Mike
After 3 yrs of work on the Dawsey's I have come to the conclusion that Pamelia was really Permelia Prevatt
Dawsey.
Reason: 1952 picture of Smyrna Baptist Church.
1.The monument placed in front of church by grandchildren
states James Joshua and Permelia gave the property
to build the first church.
2. James Joshua Dawsey's will dated 1871 has her name
spelled Permelia.
3. The Prevatts of Southweat Georgia states that sometimes
Permelia ( which is a Prevatt family names is spelled
Parmelia. Archie Prevatt authoe of the Prevatt book
say the spelling isn't a family spelling of the name.
4. She had two grandchildren named after her, Permelia
Dawsey Burkett daughter of Thomas Jefferson Dawsey
and Ada Permelia Dawsey daughter of John F. Dawsey.

Several years ago a Virginia Dawsey Stovall worked on
the Dawsey's along with Venice. The Decatur Co. Marrige
records have her name spelled Pamelia, this is where I
think Virginia got the spelling. When Virginia decided
this was the correct spelling she distroyed the monument
at the church and replaced it with a new one and also she
changed her tombstone. Decatur Co Georgia Marriges
also have Dawsey spelled Dorsey./ Typos
I just saw this note on the net that you wrote several years
ago. Todate I print out some 210 pages on the family, I
feel if I can run down James Dawsey son of Michael and
brother of Thomas D. I caN CONNECT TO the Dawsey's
of the Carolinias.
scott
