DEA/DEE Bridget b c1831 IRE m Michael RAFTER; IRE>ENG>USA, Pittsburgh PA

Seek siblings, parents, other ancestors or any info about life in Ireland, England or journey to USA, etc. Have info to share; continued contact not necessary unless you wish.

Michael Frances RAFTER* b c1830 IRE
m Bridget DEE/DEA** b c1831 IRE [Bridget possibly b Tipperary per family rumor mill]. Unknown if married in IRE or ENG.
Moved to England & had first 5 of 7 children:

Mary b c1854, Warrington, Lancashire, ENG
Katherine "Kate" b Jul 1860, Orrell, Lancashire, ENG
John b c1861, Orrell, Lancashire, ENG
Margaret "Maggie" b c1862, ENG
Michael b c1866, ENG
Edward b 10 July 1868, Pittsburgh, PA, USA
Cornelius b 10 July 1868, Pittsburgh, PA, USA

Earliest sighting finds this family as "RAFFTREE" [a big hint on how they were pronouncing their surname or how enumerator was hearing it], 1861 UK census, Orrell, Lancashire, England. 1870 finds whole family in greater Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (PA), USA area.

Whole family immigrated to USA between birth of son, Michael, in 1866 & July 1868; unknown if all traveled together; unknown port of departure from ENG. or arrival in US. Best guess is they made their way directly to Pittsburgh PA. where had two more children (twins). Michael worked in the coal mines in ENG. & PA. Can account for many descendants from 1870 forward, especially those of Cornelius. This family was Catholic. Have all available census (US and 1861 UK) info; cannot locate immigration or naturalization info.

* believe name changed from RAFTERY/RAFERTY/RAFFERTY but cannot document when/where
** unsure of exact spelling of surname; my grandmother pronounced it as "dee".

Thanks for looking.
Hello Janice

I have also have Kilteely O'Deas. John O'Dea and Penelope Meagher had 5 children that I know of christened in Kilteely -

Bridget 1820
Michael 1823
John 1826
Margaret 1834
Thomas 1837

Bridget married John Lynch in Kilteely in 1840 before emigrating to Australia. Michael left for Australia soon after, went on to be a miner in San Francisco before marrying Mary Purtell in Australia in 1848.

Do any of these names match any of your records??

Regards

Peter
I am trying to trace info on my husbands grandmother, her parents, siblings and any nieces , nephews etc. She was Jane O'Dea born in Baunmore, County Clare, Ireland in 1881. Fathers name Thomas O'Dea, mother Briget O'Dea ne Burke. (this info is on her birth cert. that I have and given to me by Janes only child, my mother in law Veronica. I was obtained in the 1940's as Jane never had one). I can't find out any info re Jane and would love to be able to give my m.i.law some whilst she is still with us (she is now 87). Jane came to South Australia in the 1890's when she was about 14yrs. A sister came and apparently died about 6 months later. A brother went to America about the same time. Jane was also known as Jennie (on her marriage cert. Jennie O'Dea widdowed when she married Alfred Passmore in1920). Also known as nana Jean to my husband and his sister and brother. She died in 1958 in Newcastle NSW Australia. Do you have any info on any of them, would love to be able to fit things together. Thanks for your time Faye Chapman

I'm looking for a Catherine Dea married to a Patrick McDonald (or McDonnell).

They would have been born in Ireland in the late 1700s or early 1800s.

Their daughter Ann (or Hanora) was born 1837-1841 in Ireland.

She came to Ontario about 1850, although I don't know if her parents came with her. Ann married a David Mahoney and had three daughters in the 1860s. He died in 1867 and was buried in Smith's Falls, Ontario. She remarried in 1872 to Eugene McCarthy, had two more daughters and lived in Toledo, Kitley Twp., Leeds Co. Ontario until she died in 1914.

I also beleive she was raised by her mother in Spokane or Seattle Washington. She had two older half brothers, quite a bit older I think (5 to 8 yrs older). The only other thing I know was in the eighth grade she had long dark hair. Our Grandmother was given a picture of her by one of her half brothers at that time (1960??). Grand mother lived in Cascade,Montana at that time and he was traveling through and stopped to see her. I am trying to locate her to see if she is allergic to the drug "anectine" a paralysis drug used in surgery.

My great grandmother had rheumatic fever and was deaf in one ear. I am very allergic to the effects of anastegia and have had 3 episodes throughout my life which left me emotionally distraught for quite some time after surgery. Your inquiry struck a note with me, and I thought I'd drop you a line incase any of mine sounded familiar....Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Dea

Helen, I am pretty sure the family is from Mayo or Sligo. I am also guessing that the name is Dea and not Day. If I find any thing else I will notify you. Sheehan is my husbands name and we know nothing about that side of the family but the name of Sheehan may have been taken on when his grandfather came into the U. S., and possibly not even from Ireland. Another mystery.

Dea family of New Jersey

I don't know if this will help as I suspect that we are from two different families but here is what I know (which is fragmentary):
In the early 1800s there was a Roger Dea who apparently emigrated from England. He had at least one son, Roger Dea born abt. March 1819 in New York.
Roger jr. moved back to England where he met and married, the wife's name was either Mary or Elizabeth. He returned to America and died on April 2, 1893 in Union Grove, New Jersey. He had at least two sons, Harry (who died as a teenager) and Edward John.
Edward John Dea married Christine Baxter and they lived in Jamaica Plains and Boston, Massachusetts. They had seven children: Roger, John, Edward, Thomas, Robert, Henry and Christina. I don't know if any of these moved to New Jersey nor do I know of a Ralph Dea.

- Douglas Dea
