In that case, e-mail me at tonykirkman@csi.com.

Hi, I am very interested in your information. Richard Deacon is my G Grandfather and I have no record of him ever going to Australia. William left Plymouth in Dec 1881. Richard was married in 1870 to Sophia Lucas they had six children all born in Cornwall but there is a gap from 1876 to 1886, so it is possible he went to Australia and returned.I note that Joseph and Susan went to Canada for about two years and that Amelia was born in Wellington Ontario. I assume you are related via one of their four daughters as William died aged 23 and I have no record of him being married. I have traced living relatives of Willam in Australia and I am in contact with them. Discussions about them will have to be offline

I'm descended from William's brother Joseph who stayed in Cornwall. I have a handwritten diary written by William on board the Almora on his way over to Queensland, which he sent back to Joseph. His brother Richard was already in Gympie and it seems he organised an assisted passage for William. I'm trying to find out more about what happened to William after he got there so I'd be interested to hear from you.

Hi Jan,
Yes I did, and have been trying to reply but there is a glitch it seems in loading. So will try again. But yes-it works so that is much better. I have been downloading military records- for Charles Inman. It is a bit confusing. Joseph Deacon had a son Charles, and Edwin aso had a son Charles. There are three sets of records for Charles Inman on the WW1 Army Service site. One has a brother William, so that must be the one belonging to Joseph.
It is a bit difficult to sort them out as one of them started 1904 and was re-enlisted three times. Anyway it was 1:00 am when I finally packed it in and I was seeing double. I will try to sort them out again today.
cheers, Diana

Hi Jan,
I was wondering about the Fred who cameto Canada-which province? and when approx? I can look for him on the ships passenger lists. I checked Frederick Deacons on the Canadian Natonal Archives site-it has the records for WWl Cdn Expeditionary Forces-there are about 6 Frederick Deacons there-most born in Canada though. One b. 1896 was b in Quebec.
I will look on the UK WWl rolls on Ancestry and let you know what I find. I would like to have more names and dates on the family if you have them. You never know when something will pop up on a list-a query or an AHA moment!
Someday I will get to Bradford and talk to the Deacon cousins-they aren't particularly interested in genealogy, but they might remember some connection. I would like to get back further than Joseph Deacon. The two cousins I found are both early 70's, and William has lung cancer. His sister is the keeper of the keys as far as family info is concrned, but she doesn't write letters! I did get a Xmas card this year though-after several years of me sending cards and letters that way! So maybe she is warming up!!!
could you try contacting me at isledi at gmail.com
By the way the Canadian 1911 census is available so if you think any of the family was here then I can do a lookup.
I am at a dead loss on much of the English research coming forward as there are not many avenues available after the 1901 census.
My grandmother Bertha Padgett (M to Tom Deacon) was from a large family but I can't sem o track any of them after about 1912. Would love to be in touch with some today-I guess I need to do the letter writing thing again!! Only now it really is very expensive to post!
Okay Sunday morning here-must get a move on.
Cheerio.
Diana

Hi Jan,
I kind of jumped the gun when I started looking for Emily b 1910. Her father was William and that was confusing. It is obviously a different famiy. Anyway my connection is William, son of James b 1848, m Eliza Chippendale. My grandfather, Tom b 1879 was the eldest of 10 children. William was married twice-the first time to Christiana Brooke and they had about three childdren, but she and the small ones all died. Then Wm married Eliza.
I have George Inman son of James married to Mary Ann Turner but that is all the info I have in my Legacy program. But I remember seeing census with the family in North Yorkshire? It must have been Carlisle. And when looking at the WWl lists I have seen Walter and George Inman listed. Also I have a copy of WWl roll of honour from the Bradford library-There are several Deacons and Walter may be one of them. I will look through my folder again. Whenever I have seen George Inman I know it has to be family. I wonder where the Inman came from. Also Illingworth-any ideas? I figure is is from ancestors way back-but haven't found any evidence so far!
Have you ever checked railway records? I know they exist but don't know how to access them. Anyway I can fill you in on some more of the Deacons if you like.
I know my grandfather's brother George came to Canada 1909 and lived and died in Ontario. I have a bit of info on that family. My grandparents Tom and Bertha Padgett Deacon came to Canada 1912 and settled in Edmonton, Alberta. Granddad joined the Canadian Expeditionary Forces and Grandma went back to Bradford until after the War. My mom was born 1920 in Canada.
I am glad to have more info on my Deacons. I was on Ancestry last night filling in some spaces on the Deacon tree. I have more to do, but you could have a look. I am just delighted to hear from you. I am in touch with a Deacon family in Bradford-my mother's first cousin, William Deacon, son of Hubert b 1890. He lives in a house two doors down from where his parents lived for many years! I found him by looking up Deacons in the BT online and writing to all the Deacons in the area! William's stepdaughter replied by email. Pat Holland who is on the Deacon list took pictures of the house way before I knew there were still Deacons there! I have had some wonderful help from Pat and another lady, Lynne Smith, who was raised on the same street! Genealogy can be so rewarding, can't it?
Anyway I look forward to hearingfrom you. This is so exciting.
Cheers,
Diana
isledi at gmail

Hi Jan,
Yes you and I have the same info on Joseph and Mary. I agree there are so many Deacons in Idle/Windhill/Calverley that it is hard to sort them out. I worked quite a bit with Pat Holland a few years back and we managed to put together a few families but never did find a common link-although we think there is one. I looked up your Emily yesterday and found the family on the Ship's passenger lists and the US 1920 census-parents William and Lucy. I think Wm was b about 1870. Do you know who his parents were?
My ancestor is James b 1822 , son of Joseph. James m Ann Wilby and one of the sons was George Inman b 1843. Geo m Mary Ann Turner. They are on the 1881 census in Cumberland. He was on the railway. The children on the 1881 are Mary E b1866, Isaac b 1868, Walter b 1870, Hannah b 1872, Fredk b 1874. But no William.
I have been looking through all my Deacon notes and research this morning. A lot of it is in a file that needs to be sorted out. Found a couple of Emily Deacons but earlier than 1910.
Do you have any further clues for me? I have a lot of info that Pat and I compiled several years ago but it is not on this computer.
I am happy to share info. I look forward to hearing from you.

I am very interested in this train of thought on the Deacons because my husband's sister was married to a Deacon which I took back to Abraham Deacon, b. Nov. 10, 1824 in Windhill, Yorkshire,England and married to Ann (Hartley)b. Sep 14, 1834. They were married in abt. 1857 in West Riding, Yorkshire, Bradford District. Most of their children were born in Shipley, Yorkshire.

Would like to find out if Abraham had any sibling's and who his parents were. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Will help with any of the information that I have on this Deacon family.

Thanks,
Pam in Illinois

Hi Diana

It is really confusing because certain names occur in different generations which suggests many of these families in Idle are related but further back than we can track on the census.

My grandma Emily dob 30 May 1910 is obviously not on the 1901 Census and the Cumberland 1911 Census isn't issued yet. She also had a sister Mary Emma dob 23 Jan 1909 and at least one more brother but I have to wait until the Census to confirm. Her brothers George Inman 1894, Fred 1896, sister Gladys Victoria 1897, brothers Walter 1899 and Albert 1902 are there in 1901. All the family I knew were based in and around Carlisle. I met Gladys and Jim (the one I need to confirm) and knew Walter and Albert who was my beloved Uncle Bill or great uncle but never called that.

Her father was Walter 18 Oct 1869 who married Elizabeth Gourlay (a Scot)dob 1872 Upperby - married 14 Dec 1893 in Upperby.

Walter was the son of George Inman Deacon dob 25 Nov 1841 and his father was James and we are back to where we started.

The only William Deacon I have is James' son dob 1849.

Which son of James connects your family line? I know we have family in Canada - my mum's cousin Fred lived there but
since, they are both deceased and I am not in contact with the remaining family, I do not know which brother went there. Actually, by a process of elimination it was probably Fred dob 1896 because my mum's cousin was Fred and he was probably named after his father but I don't know any of his children's names. I don't know of a William and Lucy going there.

These Deacons!

I have been to the Church at Upperby and there is a plaque on the wall to commemorate the service of George Inman and Walter Deacon in the 1st World War. It is a lovely church. I have also been to the house where my grandma and her family grew up. It is a tiny house and it's amazing so many of them fit into it! Upperby is virtually attached to Carlisle and their house in Harraby backs onto the railway depot.

Emily moved to Manchester when she was 18 and that is where my mum grew up though we had many visits to Mary's house in Carlisle. This is probably too much info but I wanted to finish the story for you.

I sometimes feel I have found more information on the lives of my ancestors than the closer family - I wished I had started this when they were alive or paid more attention when I was younger.

Hopefully when you collate my info with yours you will be closer to sorting the Deacons out.

Yours

Jan

Hi Diana

I tried to send you a quick message last night but had overstayed my welcome on ancestry or something and my eyes were losing focus as I had spent about 4 hours on the computer. I have looked at your family tree. I have a different Family Tree programme and now I wish I was on ancestry. My tree is so big now it will take me ages to transcribe it - maybe one day!

I have never found our George and Walter on the WW1 lists and I had myself convinced it was family folklore before I saw their names at Upperby Parish Church.

I looked at your tree and found some useful information and now I feel I have picked your brains rather than helped you.

I am amazed at your dedication to tracing Deacons in Bradford - it must have cost you a fortune to send letters to them.

As I mentioned in a previous eml- I only vaguely knew the family had originally come from Yorkshire. I grew up a Lancastrian and we have been in opposition to the 'Yorkists' since the War of the Roses (which we were taught at school we won and they are taught that they won!). Other than Lancastrian, I thought we were Cumbrian with a touch of Scottish. Since researching my heritage I have found my relatives came from London and many other places in England whereas my husband's family come from a radius of 20 miles from where he was born!

Looking at your tree.

You probably know the word wyks is an abbreviation for West Yorkshire - I am not trying to be picky it's just that sometimes there are mistakes on ancestry because the people transcribing the info don't live in the UK and I wouldn't want it to handicap further research.

William Wilby was born 1801 in Yorkshire and Margaret Firth was born in 1806 in Bradford and sadly that is as much as I know other than the names of the rest of the family if you are interested.

Illingworth is a place name in Yorkshire and I don't know about Inman. I agree with you that there must be some significance because they occur so many times in the family. There are 2 Charles Inman Deacons in my tree.

I have loved researching the family history as there is so much social history revealed. I love it when it all clicks together and confirms relationships. I wish, though, the early census had more information and were more accurate about names and birthdates, that records went back further and that more of the parish records were on-line, that some of the newer census were on-line and not so expensive and that I was more aware of different methods of research. It isn't that easy to search the Parish records as you have to make an appointment. The year before last at Upperby Church we only got in without an appointment because there were decorators in and they asked us to leave because we didn't have one. We had been visiting Hadrian's Wall and stayed at Carlisle so we took the opportunity to have a look for my grandma's roots.

Other than the frustrations it is one of my obsessions and I can bore for England on my research. Also, in the past 2 or 3 weeks I have 'met' people from Australia and Canada how wonderful is that! I did contact somebody last year in the ancestry community but they never wrote back after I had passed on the info. So I am so glad you write back to me.

Well, I am going to feed my new info into my tree and if anything occurs to me I will let you know.

Yours

Jan
Yours

Jan

Hi Diana

I probaby don't know much more than you do. Here goes :

Joseph Deacon 1780 in Idle nr Bradford Yorkshire

married Mary Oldfield 21 Mar 1814 Calvery, Yorkshire

children:
Benjamin born 1816, Idle
Elizabeth born 1817 Idle
George born 1819 Idle
James born 1822 Idle (this is my family line)
Tabitha born 1824 Idle
Charles Inman born 1829 Idle

My grandmother was the last Deacon on my side of the family. The family worked on the railway and, between the census of 1871 and 1881, they moved to Carlisle (another big railway centre). I remember my mother talking about the family coming from Yorkshire but it wasn't until I researched the family history that I connected us to Idle near Bradford. Unfortunately, Deacon seems to have been the main family name there so it is difficult to find particular families. I would be interested to trace your branch of the tree and see where we converge.

I haven't done much family research lately but I have been pulled back to it by the issue of part of the 1911 Census - unfortunately the Carlisle part is not out yet or I would be back at this part of the tree.

Let me know if you want more info on my part of the family.

Yours

Jan (Germany)

I am hoping to find more info about Ann Deacon who married James Pinniger in 1853. Do you possibly have any photos of her or her family? I have been loaned photos which were taken in England, but no names are on them. I have been trying to rule out families. I believe the possibilities are Deacon, Pinniger, or Bailey.

Hi, My gt grandfather was George William Deacon born 1849 in Chorlton, Manchester and married Selina Jane Ash in Southampton on 3 Oct 1878. Selina died in 1929, as I believe did George. George and Selina had a number of children including Herbert who was my grandfather. He died in 1980. George's father was Samuel Deacon married to Amelia Benn and this Samuel was the son of another Samuel Deacon who had links to the Isle of Man. I have a number of original documents and photos passed down to me so would be interested in sharing info with you.

Hi Elizabeth. This is so exciting as I have been working on the Deacons for some time although I have had a break from it for the last year. I have a lot of original documents which I would be very interested in sharing with you and we will have to try and get together when the weather is a bit less arctic! I am in South Bucks west of London, but funnily enough was born in West Yorkshire and spent some years living in Gainsborough so travelled through Doncaster quite a lot. My father (Robert Benn Deacon)was quite adament Selina Jane was a Benn and so is his sister who is still alive. However I eventually found she was an Ash and was born in Oxford, the son of a publican George Ash and his wife Mary Ann Bateman. Amelia Elizabeth married to Samuel, our gg grandparents, was a Benn and was the daughter of a John Benn and I have quite a lot of documents relating to all of them including original baptism and marriage certificates. Amelia was born in Deptford. George and Selina had 7 children, one died in WW1 and one in WW2 at the hands of the Japanese. There are Samuels, Franks and Herberts in more than one generation so it gets a bit confusing! If you could let me know your email address if this is OK then I could send you some documents and we could arrange to meet. Look forward to hearing from you, Barbara.
