Deahl and Smith Pa and WV

I am hoping someone can help me end my 14 year struggle with this family. I am looking for any information on Elizabeth Deahl b. 29 May 1857 in Addison Twp, d/o of Simon and Catharine Sliger. married to William H Smith. I don't know who his family was. He was born in England in 1835-1839.
This is complicated, so please bare with me.
William H Smith came from England in 1842. I think he may have settle with his family in Somerset Co Pa., but I haven't found anything to verify that. William first married Eliza Deahl, d/o of Jacob and Sarah. They had one son John whom I am told was born in Addison Twp, but I have found NO record of this birth. They moved to Allegany Co Md and had a daughter Agatha, so I am told, but again nothing to verify this. Eliza died in 1873 and I guess William returend to Addison and married her first cousin, Elizabeth Deahl. They then moved to Barbour Co WV and later to Preston Co, WV. They had 11 children. I just can't find any census record in 1860 of somerset co to verify the info.
1. I would like to know who the parents of William were
2. Who the parents of Catharine Sliger were.
3. could someone tell me where I could find 1860 census. I don't belong to Ancestry.
Thanks
Bev

Came to the US abt 1842.
Any information on Elizabeth eg. place of birth,
I think she was born in Somerset Co Pa, but could have been Preston Co WV.
Samuel B. Deahl from Ohio

I just found out last night that my GGrandfather (the above) came from Massillon Ohio. Was born 29 Jan 1855. He married Maude Bowen in 1875 in Edgar County Illinois. Died 1950 in Cerro Gordo Illinois. They met around Paris Illinois about 1873. After marring they moved to Piatt County and settled down. By all acounts from this board this could be the Samuel B. Deahl from Stark County Ohio on his way to Kansas. I have yet to follow up on this information and see if I can find him in Ohio prior to 1880. Samuel and Wife are listed in the 1880 census as Deal with 2 year old daughter (my grandmother). I also located him in a newspaper article about their 72 wedding anniversary with the spelling of Diehl.

Bev;Betty sent me a message about your search. Now if Grandad is still alive,he may have several pictures and or things from way way back that could help you.I found the one August Zuccari in West Va also, but it also says his social security # was given in Ohio.Do we know how old he was when he came to this country or was he born in this country. And the year of his birth. We could go through the census for that but would really need to know a little more info on him.I found a third cousin by a picture I had only.My grandmoms brother changed his first name from Albert to George and his last name was Lutz he changed it to Marion and beleive me it was a tough one but with the pictures and papers I had from my grandparents was able to find out alot of info, found cousins and now we are all checking in different areas.Funny one Uncle was in Preston W.Va.You can e-mail me at lin_4114@hotmail.com.Linda

Don't be bothered by changes in spelling of the name. It was common in the mid-late 1800's as many people couldn't write anyway and someone who could write would spell it like it sounded. My gg grandfather shows up in consecutive censuses as Deal, Dale, Diehl, and Dieahl (which is on his tombstone). His son, my ggrandfather, went by Dale and my grandfather went by Diehl. This is one of the reasons the census archives use soundex to find similar sounding names. Good luck and good hunting!

I have been looking for some reference to Samuel B. Deahl for some months. My GGrandfather was Samuel Benjamin Deahl b. 1855 in either Indiana or Ohio. I have found two census reference to eithe state, so ???. The first reference I found is in Edgar County Illinois in 1880 census with wife and 2 year old daughter (my grandmother, Maude Bowen). All ages and given names are correct but the surname is spelled Deal. I have add an attachment which mentions this information but again the surname spelling is different with Diehl. He married Anna Etnoyer from Pennsylvania in 05 Nov 1876. The news clipping is from the Dixon Evening Telegraph Oct 27, 1948, page 4. I hope this may help someone.

Dora, born in 1909, lived in Marion County WV. Her mother was Grace Boggess, a sister of Ruth Boggess, my great grandmother. I'm trying to find out more about Annie Payne. Anyone in Dora's line might have some info to share. I know when she married Seldon Boggess, but I have no info about her parents or background. Thanks!

If you can find a copy of the book Deahl/Deal The History of Descendants of Henry Deahl, which was privately published in 1992 by Eleanor Deal you will find conserable information about Eliza Deahl, the daughter of Jacob Deahl. Elizabeth Deahl is mentioned as the daughter of Simon Deahl and it is stated that she also married a William Smith. It is not clear in the book if these are the same William Smith's. I have a copy of the book and I know that University of West Virginia Library at Morgantown also has one. I am not sure who else might have one. If you can not find one please contact me by private email.

Adam Deahl - - Married Elizabeth Simon

I am aware of the various spellings of Deahl, Diehl, Deal, Dial, and probably others.
Looking for names of descendants of Adam Deahl, Born 18 March 1840 near Petersburg, Pa., married Elizabeth Simon, born 5 April 1845 near Petersburg, Pa., married 19 May 1861 in Accident, Maryland. Reports say they had ten children. I have the names of only three. Adam was the son of Andreas (Andrew) Diehl, (Deahl) and Matilda Shultz. Matilda is my ancestor. Andrew and Matilda had 17 children, only 13 lived, spent their early life in Pa., and Md. and came to Macoupin County, Ill., in 1865, and in 1875 he moved to Nebraska. He and Matilda both died in Roca, Nebraska in September of 1886. Have some information, not much, but will share what I have. Thank You!!
Re: origin of Deahl Surname

The original German spelling would be either "Diehl", "Diel", or "Thiel".

The obvious way to anglicize this would be to spell it "Deal", but I've seen the spelling mangled in various ways, such as "Deahl" and "Deel"; it's certainly possible a scribal error somewhere could have transformed it into "Dihel" or even "Dial".

There is also a similar English name "Dale" which sometimes has been transformed into "Deal".

Where Mary UNKNOWN, Samuel Diehl's wife may have moved in Ohio

I found a clue where Jacob Diehl*'s wife, Mary UNKNOWN, may have moved with her children in Ohio.

Research done in Stark County archives found that a probable
child of hers, Samuel Diehl**, married Elizabeth Snyder in a German Reformed church in West Brookfield, Ohio on 8 February 1848(1). At the time, this was a rural setting due west of Mansfield, Ohio. It is now a western suburb of that city. It is likely this was the local church which nearby farm families attended.

It may be that the place to which Mary UNKNOWN moved when she left Tyrone Twp in Adams County, PA was to a farm in the vicinity of West Brookfield. Someone ought to check out this church's marriage register to learn more about this marriage and family. Perhaps the Snyders lived on a nearby farm. Census records of this region should yield more information.

The next question is what became of Samuel and Elizabeth Diehl, my gg grandparents? A global search of the 1880 U.S. Census found a Samuel Diehl and Elizabeth of the right ages in the 5th ward of Allentown [Lehigh County] PA, His
occupation is given as "Retail Merchant" and Elizabeth was "keeping house."

*b. ca 1785
**b. 5 May 1822
(1)Stark County, OH Marriage Records v.B page 293.

Regards, Thomas F. Deahl
Philadelphia, PA 19119
