Hi I am descended from the same family - Clara Deakin married a Charles White and I am from that branch! Clara Deakin White's youbgest brother William married Jane Pinner Moseley so I descend from there. Your side must be the Nurser side? I don't know how much you have learnt by now? Are you on Genes Reunited? If so I could open my tree for you - I have descendants of Mary Anne and Jane but Catherine is elusive! I think she died quite young but I hvae her last on 1841 census in Ticehurst Sussex where she was helping out at the birth of Jane's first child (married name Swan - Joseph). I cannot trace the birth or death of Charles who died in infancy - any more info?

Dear Dawn,
I have't had any replies from Deakins from Lancs. There are Deakins also in Cheshire. I have had a reply from a gentleman from Cheshire but we weren't yet able to see any common ancestors although there were similiar family first names. By the way, William Deakin is quite a common name in all the census as you will soon find. Quite frustrating!! Were your Deakins from the West Derby area of Liverpool? Hope to hear from you again. Good luck with your research.
Marie

Hi Marie

Thank you for your reply. Your family history is interesting and possibly may connect with mine. Unfortunately I have not looked into any family records yet but I will as soon as possible. I will keep in touch and find out more information. I live in Scotland but I can easily travel to Liverpool to look at some records. My father (William Raymonde Deakin) is living in North Wales and his sister lives in Liverpool who's maiden name was Nora Deakin. I will speak to the family and send you more information. Have you made contact with any other Deakin's of Liverpool/Lancashire?

Regards
Dawn

Thank you for your reply. I don't know any thing about the Deakin family after 1901. My grandmother didn't speak much about her family and didn't keep in contact with them after emigrating to Australia. My grandmother Maria, her sister Sarah and brother George Bennison were orphaned in the 1890's and went to live with their maternal grandmother Sarah Deakin. When she died they lived with their uncles Thomas and John and aunt Eliza (this is also shown on the 1901 census.) I have located the rest of the family only from census returns from 1861 onwards . The 1861 census shows William Deakin - my grandmother's grandfather DOB as 1836 born in Upholland Lancs. and his son William Deakin ( my grandmother's uncle ) DOB 1857 born in Liverpool Lancs. Both Williams show up on the 1871 census with my grandmothers mother Mary Deakin. William Deakin ( son) does not show up on the 1881 census with the family. Unfortunately I have not had time to spend doing as much research as I would have liked. Do you think this information links with yours? Hope to hear from you.
Marie

Hi there, thank you for your note. I am not sure if that person is related but I am having a few problems with that side of my family. I am descended from John Deakin who married Elizabeth Stone 1860 and had 4 sons. I am descended from one of them, George and they lived at Balsall Heath until th 1890s. I assume Elizabeth died because John and one son, Arthur, moved to Swansea and joined George and his family. I would appreciate any help you can give.

Thanks
Jackie

Hello. Yes it seems we may be connected. My grandfather George Deakin lived in Swansea and died around 1969, 70, 71 ( ? ). I don't know much about his history except he was from Birmingham or Wolverhampton.

My father Thomas Stanley Deakin, lives in Swansea. His DOB is 28th Dec 1921 ( I think that is correct ). He married Violet Mary Cox from Swansea. My father has a brother called Leonard also living in Swansea.

I am Adrian Stanley Deakin born in Swansea 23 May 1950. I am living in Australia right now. I have a brother Keri Marvin Deakin, born 15 March 1954.

Hope this helps. I will try to find out more.

Regards

Stan

My great grandfather was George Frederick Deakin, a Herbalist, born Balsall Heath 1865. He was the son of John Deakin, a Hawker, born Birmingham in 1838. John married Elizabeth from Aberayron, Cardiganshire in 1860 and they had 4 sons (to my knowledge so far), Arthur born 1861, George (my great grandfather), born 1865 at Birmingham, William born 1865 also Birmingham and Sydney born 1873 04 at Kings Norton.
John and Elizabeth lived at BARHAM BUILDINGS in parish of St Pauls, Balsall Heath (1871 Census) but by 1881 they had moved to Cambridge but Elizabeth is not shown on this Census (John was still married though). By 1891 Census John was widowed and living in Swansea which is where my George lived. Can you give me your information, it is possible we have family connections.
Jackie

John DEAKIN/DAKIN FAMILY IN LANCASHIRE AND CUMBERLAND

I am hoping to find descendants of this family from Lancashire and later in Cumberland/Cumbria. Father was John Deakin, according to the 1881 census. He was born at Coniston; Lancashire, England, and is 35 years old in the 1881 census. He is married to Mary J., age 29, and they have four children: Jonathan, age 8; Jane, age 5; John, age 3; and George, age 1. In the 1891 census, the name is spelled as Dakin. They are listed again in the 1901 census: John, Mary Jane, Dinah, Henry, Nancy, Tom and Richard.

Son, Jonathan is married to Margaret Armstrong in the 1901 census, and they have John, George and William Henry.

I tried a search on the IGI for Dakin and found a few, so possibly you are correct about the spelling. let me know if you find your Deakin's heading towards Rotherham and I will likewise if i find mine heading towards Sheffield.
I did think that Deakin was a unusual name but doesn't seem to be.
Re: James Deakin & Sarah Ann Nelson from Attercliffe, Sheffield, England

Thanks. James Deakin was born in about 1828. His father was William Deakin who in January 1856 was a ropemaker. James' address in 1856 when he married Sarah Ann Nelson at St Georges Church in the parish of Sheffield was West Street. James was a miner. Their daughter Mary was born in February of the same year at Carbrook, Attercliffe, which I think may have been the home of Mary's father Matthew Nelson. By 1875 Mary Deakin, 19, had moved to Heaton Norris, Stockport and married John Bedford.
I havent been able to establish anything more from online census material or other BDMs etc. I cant yet be sure that the Mary born in 1856 is definitely the Mary who married John Bedford though the 1881 census has her born in Sheffield and the second name of one of her daughters is Nelson, her mother's maiden name.
If you think any of this connects with your Attercliffe Deakins I would love to hear more.
I have been wondering also if Deakin was sometimes spelt Dakin, as the latter has also popped up in my research usually located in Chapel En Le Frith in Derbyshire.

Deakin - Dakin are two spelling variations of the same family in Barnsley, Yorkshire, according to family history.
The name of which, just happened to be linked to my wife's family through marriage.
A May Dakin born 1878 died 1943 m Frank Jenkinson born abt 1877. Both of Barnsley.
May's Parents were John Dakin & Sarah Ann ?
Much more direct information than that is still in na dusty archive somewhere no doubt.
But I'm gradually searching through, and making contact with living relatives in Barnsley.
If durring my research I come up with concrete proof there is a direct link between us, I shall let you know soonest.
Regards
Mark & Kathryn.

Maria Deakin was my great, great grandmother. She was born in Ireland around 1856. Her mother's name is Catherine Deakin and Maria possibly had a brother called William Philip Deakin. She married a John Mills in Salford in 1876, but no name was put down for her father on the marriage certificate, so am assuming she was born out of wedlock. Any information about Maria or her family you be greatly appreciated

I am interested in Deakins from Attercliffe/Sheffield around 1830 - 1870. Mary Deakin was born in Attercliffe to James and Sarah Ann (Nelson) Deakin in 1856. When looking for Mary in the 1861 census the most likely match seemed to be a Mary Dakin born in Attercliffe but living in Chapel en le Frith, Derbyshire. Hence I am interested in the Deakin/Dakin spelling and whether they are variations of the same surname. Is it only in Barnsley or a wider spread practice?

Hi Michael.

I am researching Deakin's, which is my surname. The trail leads me to Staffordshire, which is quite some way from Sussex, where I live. Unitll I can get the time to visit Stafford, to view parish records, I have to rely on IGI, which is not always very reliable. I have got stuck at my 4x gr.grandfather, and was wondering if you could possibly let me have a copy of the tree you have, to see if there is any connection. Funny, this is the second time I have come across Alison - we had some correspondence a couple of years ago. Would be extremely grateful for any help.

Best wishes

Bill Deakin
