If you are researching the Deans of Perry County Ohio please read the following:
1) I am a direct descendant of Samuel Dean (b abt 1805 probably in VA) & Mary M. Hareholtzer. I descend from this line via their daughter Ellen ( Eleanor) Dean who married Peter Snider in Perry Co OH.
2) I have researched this line for many years.
3) Hugh Dean (b abt 1812 in Shenandoah Valley,VA) was the brother of my Samuel Dean, not his father.
4) By oral tradition, we have Charles Dean & his wife Eleanor, as the parents of Samuel & Hugh. In turn, again by oral tradition, we have Charles Dean as the brother of Mason (Massom) Dean. To date, I have yet to find a document or documents that spport these realtionships. Until such records are located we can not asuume Charles was the father of Samuel & Hugh, or the brother of Mason ( Massam) Dean. If you are interested in the lineage of Mason (Massam) Dean you may want to read a very fascinating & exceptional well documented story of Mason (Massom) Dean, a mulatto b abt 1746 MD and d aft 1820 in Hopewell Township, Perry County Ohio. You will find his story at the following site under the title of the Other Richard Dean.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ladeanxx/r...5) I believe the confusion of which Samuel arrived in Nebraska via Perry County Ohio began again with oral tradition. I was told Samuel (b abt 1805), his wife, Mary and some of their children left Ohio to homestead in Nebraska. According to deed records, this move had to occur shortly after 1847. To date, I have yet to discover/document where Samuel b @1805 and family moved to after leaving Perry County Ohio.
In the 1885 Census record of Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska you find a S.P. Dean. This is Samuel P Dean b 1857 Perry County Ohio. He is the son of Hugh Dean and Teresa Sharkey-Dean. He marries Margaret J Walsh abt 1885 in Nebraska. He is listed in the 1900 , 1910 & 1920 Omaha, Douglas County Nebraska Census.
In short, two Samuel Deans. One the elder, and uncle to, the younger Samuel Dean and so the confusion.
6) I have recently taken a Family Finder DNA test, and the results prove our Samuel & Hugh Dean are connected to a line of Deans that began with a Benjamin Deen b 1764 who arrived in the United States in 1774. As this is very new information, I have no clue on how our Samuel & Hugh descended from this Benjamin Deen, yet!
Respectfully,
Chris
