Many thanks for your messages, I have both Richard Deane and Anthony Deane in my family tree. A couple of years ago via a Canadian contact on the 'genes' site, I was given information on the descendents of Joseph Deane 1623/4 who apparently went to Ireland with Cromwell's troops. My information is on either the 'gene's site or tribal pages:-
www.deanefamilytree-tribalpages.

I do not have access to the records that were passed down to my father. They are in Canada with my mother, but I seem to recall connections to a group of Deanes from England (I thought Gloucestershire). Again, lineages do get hazy prior to 1700s, but I do recall that a certain Richard Deane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Deane) served as an admiral under Cromwell, and was killed in action in 1653 in the Dutch wars. There's another Deane, Anthony (http://ageofsail.devhub.com/blog/585313-sir-anthony-deane-16...), who built ships for Cromwell, two of which served with distinction in the Dutch wars. He was a royalist, and served in the royal dockyards. His book was Doctrine of Naval Architecture (http://www.amazon.com/Deanes-doctrine-naval-architecture-167...). Sorry, but what follows is from memory. Some of the Deanes went to Scotland, some to Ireland. But, with so many branches, it's hard to know if the Deanes of County Cavan are connected or how. I know that two decades ago when I did look into genealogy as a hobby, I was unable to prove a connection to Richard, who, by the way, is a signee of the death warrant of Charles I. One of the papers that was sent to me recently speaks of a property in County Cavan that was "deed of gift" to an ancestor who served in Cromwell's army. This could have been a relative of Richard Deane. I read this book two ecades ago, so I can't recall if there were family trees in it: J. Bathurst Deane, The Life of Richard Deane (1870). All my research in the 80s and early 90s was done before the internet made it possible to post information and to retrieve so many records.

Hello,
Are the Deanes of Cavan related to the descendents of Joseph Deane c 1648 of Dromore, Ireland? His descendents were the Deane family of Dromore.

We are definitely speaking of the same person. Information I dug up is that Lieut. Col. Andrew Deane, M.D., Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, had at least 4 sons:

John Alfred Lyall Deane (b.21 Sept 1892) [my grandfather, nicknamed Jack, I am thinking?]
Charles Herbert Stanley Deane (b.26 Mar 1886)
Reginald Neville Deane (b.11 April 1897)
William Plowden Deane (b.28 Sept 1894)

Did not find May, but then this is a male college registry...

Source: http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/CampbellCollegeRegister2.htm#79...

By the way, I am Andrew Robert Deane (b. Guildford, Surrey England 28 June 1967). Father was Robert Alan Deane (b. Peshawar, India 10 April 1935, d. Mill Bay, BC, Canada 1 January 2010.
Sounds like they are not the same man, so I will have to look at the family records (with my mother on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. Unfortunately, I have no access to these until June when I visit. But, I do intend to take a greater interest in family history as my mother is aging, and she is a storehouse of lore!

Thank you for your prompt reply. I will post again after I've seen the family records, especially if I can shed any light on the thread here.

Thank you.

Hi Col Andrew Deane from Cavan was a doctor in India. He then became superintendent of Belfast hospital in 1901. He died 22/11/1922 b 2/12/1846 parents George Deane and Elizabeth Mahood of Long(Lung) farm Cootehill. He was married to Lillian Ann b 8/10/1857 d 15/7/1920. I have a picture of their graves in Belfast cemetry. I am not sure of any children. But if they are one and the same then he also had a brother William also a doctor who died in India and another brother Samuel also a doctor who went to England and 2 brothers John and George who went to Australia.I will need to check with a cousin in Wales as to what children they had. Apparently after retiring he went to England and died at Southend-on-Sea. Hope that helps. Your grandfathers name doesn't ring a bell though but I will check. Cheers

Hello,

I ran across your post quite by chance, and I was struck by one of the names you mentioned: Andrew Deane, who was a doctor in the Indian Army. My great grandfather was named Andrew, and he was a doctor stationed in India. I do not have access to family files here in Tokyo, but I am fairly certain that these two Andrews are one and the same. In fact, I am wearing his signet ring (a raised arm in armor, the clenched fist holding a gold bezant) which was crafted in London, I think, in 1922 (I did look up the hallmarks once, but I haven't got the notes I made). Anyway, Andrew Deane once set the collarbone for Lord Mountbatten after a polo accident. I have no idea about the dates. One of his sons was John Alfred Lyell Deane (spelling of names uncertain), my grandfather. The reason I came across your post was that I knew from memory that our family heralded from County Caven, and I was just curious!

I traced the oldest sibling to my Granfather (Wash Deane) who also went to winnipeg manitoba and I am wondering if your Wylie tie is the reason. Francis Beligum Deane married William Cooke (child Fred). Wash's wife Margaret Wylie. Her parents were Robert Wylie and Eliza Annie Stockman.
