Dorothy Bessie Dearborn, 59,
Dorothy Bessie Dearborn
Dorothy Bessie Dearborn, 59, of Grand Valley passed away Tuesday morning March 10, 2009.
was called home to be at peace with God and her horses that went before her. She changed the lives of so many that knew and loved her. She dedicated her heart and soul to fulfilling God's call for her life through her love of horses and teaching the campers of the United Methodist Church. A strong inspirational woman, she held the admiration of many. In 1969, she founded the Progressive Horsemanship Program to teach children and adults of all ages the joy of riding horses and ponies. She designed her unique program to safely bring joy, satisfaction and self confidence to anyone that stepped through her barn doors and was privileged to set atop one of her beloved horses. She wrote, illustrated, and had published all her own teaching books detailed for each level of experience in her program. Through Dorothy's faith, dedication, hard work and perseverance, the Progressive Horsemanship Program changed lives. Dorothy had a gift. She had the insight to match a rider to a horse that was perfect for them. It didn't matter your confidence or skill level, she would ease your fears and make you feel at home. Not one person walked into her life without feeling Dorothy's impact on their own. Whether it be through her wisdomly words of wanted or unwanted advice, a shoulder to lean on, or a partner for a peaceful trail ride through God's creation. If it was in her power, she would move the earth to get it done. Dorothy taught us many lessons while she was with us and without a doubt we will be hearing her voice and finally understanding some of those lessons for years to come. She is survived at home by her husband, Tom Dearborn; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Kristi Eck, Grand Valley and two grandsons, Justin and Konnor whom she loved with her whole heart. Also surviving are one sister, Esther (Bill) Ingram; two brothers Edward (Mabel) Dickey and Ronald Dickey, many nieces and nephews and of course, her 71 horses and ponies. Her memory will live on through the lives of her grandsons and the continuation of her Progressive Horsemanship Program by her son, Mike, husband, Tom and her family. In remembrance of Dorothy's love for her horses and her beloved riding program, memorial donations can be made to Dorothy Dearborn's memorial fund at Wesley Woods Horse Program, 10001 Fiddlersgreen Road, Grand Valley, PA 16420 Friends will be received at McKinney Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, Inc. in Youngsville from 2 - 4:30 p.m. on Friday followed by a service at 5 p.m. with Rev. Marcus Briggs officiating. Family and friends may sign the on-line guestbook or send an e-condolence at www.mckinneyfuneral.com Sign the guestbook at www.GoErie.com/obits
Published in the Erie Times-News on 3/12/2009,

McKinney Funeral Homes ,
United Methodist Church.
Re: Tobin-Dearborn Connection - Maine

Hartford, Maine vital records show the marriage of Benjamin Tobin and Thirza Dearborn, 5 Aug 1817 (intention filed 16 June 1817). Thirza was born in Hartford 14 Feb 1797 and died there 11 Aug 1853, age 56 (gravestone), daughter of Richard[6] (Richard[5], Jacob[4], Thomas[3-2], Godfrey[1]) and Elizabeth (Hutchings) Dearborn. Benjamin died 18 July 1870, age 78, and is buried with Thirza and several children who died in infancy. They are buried in Swan Pond Cemetery, Hartford. Her parents and brother Joseph Dearborn are buried in the cemetery's front row, and the Tobin stone is in the second row.

The other people listed on the stone are Franklin B. Tobin, d 10 July 1822, age 2 yrs; and Thirza Tobin, d 20 Mar 1849, age 10 yrs.

I have not traced the Tobins further, either forward or backwards, but would be interested in any information that you can share.

Thirza's father was Richard[6] Dearborn, b Pepperellborough [now Saco], ME 12 Apr 1769; d Hartford 22 Feb 1861, age 91, son of Richard[5] and Mary (Whitten) Dearborn. He married at Limerick, ME 12 Apr 1793 (his 24th birthday), Elizabeth Hutchings, b (according to family tradition) Portsmouth, NH 12 Sept 1772; d Hartford 20 Jan 1857, age 85, daughter of Joseph[5] (Joseph[4], Thomas[3], Enoch[2-1]) and Mary (Wilson) Hutchings.

Richard and Elizabeth Dearborn were in Hartford as early as 1795, and settled in the southern part of Hartford, about 3/4 mile north of Swan Pond. The house was still inhabited by descendants as recently as 1942, but by 1977 it had burned to the ground, and the road is now impassable by car.

Richard and Elizabeth Dearborn had twelve children, all of whom lived to adulthood and married. A wonderful family record, consisting of a series of interlinked ovals forming a circle, is pictured in Cornelius Weygandt, NEW HAMPSHIRE NEIGHBORS (1937), opposite p. 320. Richard and Elizabeth's names appear in the topmost links, and the names of each of their twelve children, with their dates of birth, make up the other links. In the center of the chain is a rather stylized watercolor and ink painting of the farmhouse. I don't know where the original is, but I own a copy, made in the 19th century.

Axel Dearborn Tobin was named for Thirza's brother, Axel[7] Dearborn (1814-1903) of Boston.

I have a correction. Sarah, David, and Charles Dearborn are not buried in Brown Cemetery. It is Brownell Cemetery. I don't know why they are buried there. It is in the northeast corner of the county and Laird is in the center. I am going to visit my grandfather in a couple of weeks and if the weather is good I plan to go to that cemetery and look for the graves. Maybe that will answer some questions.

Re: Horatio G. Dearborn b. 1806 m. Elizabeth R. Shackford 1829

Horatio G. Dearborn's death is recorded in Massachusetts Vital Records, vol. 212, page 268. This states that he died in Quincy, Mass. 13 May 1868, age 62 yrs. 3 mos. 25 days, typhoid fever, male, married, blacksmith, birthplace Newmarket, NH, son of Joseph and Anna Dearborn (both b. North Hampton, NH).

Horatio and his wife, Elizabeth Ring Shackford, were enumerated at Quincy in the 1850 and 1860 Censuses. They had no children. By his will, dated 13 April 1863 and proved 20 May 1868, Horatio G. Dearborn, "being in my usual good health," left $1 to his sister, Mrs. Mary Watson of Newmarket, NH and the rest to his wife Elizabeth. His estate consisted of 3/4 acre of land with the homestead on Willard Street in Quincy, valued at $2,766.66, furniture, silver, wearing apparel, etc., valued at $$571.33; and two pews in the Orthodox [Congregational] Church in Railway Village in Milton (numbers 18, 25), valued at $55 (Norfolk Co. Probate, #5464). By her will, dated 7 Dec 1877 and proved 29 July 1881, Elizabeth Dearborn of Quincy left personal items to her sisters Mary Dorr and Martha Smith, and the rest of her property to her nephew Horatio D. Hanson of Lexington, MA, whom she named executor. The petition for probate gives a full list of the heirs at law, including siblings, nieces and nephews. The inventory of her estate included the late homestead and 3/4 acre of land on Willard St., Quincy, valued at $1,500; and miscellaneous furniture, clothing, etc., valued at $155 (Ibid., #22524).

To repeat, Horatio and Elizabeth (Shackford) Dearborn had no children. Your James must have been fathered by someone else.

I believe that Horatio was born 19 Jan 1806 in Newmarket, Rockingham, NH and died 13 May 1868 in Quincy, Norfolk, Massachusetts but I cannot find his death record in the Massachusetts Vital Records 1841-1910. Also I believe that he had a son James and am wondering when Jame was born and if he and Elizabeth had any other children. I can find the death record of Elizabeth Ring Shackford Dearborn died 29 Jul 1881 in Quincy, Norfolk, Massachusetts. Thanks for any help you can offer

Re: Dearborn's in the 1600 & 1700's

Hello Joyce

Thank you for giving us the URL to a data base of ancestors of Silver Smiths that must have caught your attention because it had some DEARBORN entries.

I selected "Mrs Ann Dearbarne" to see if someone had discovered the name of Godfrey's 2nd wife. Genealogists affectionately call her "Miss Goody". If this webpage's data was true we could now call her "Ann unkown" instead of "unknown, unknown"

My hopes were dashed when I viewed the lack of scholarship diplayed on this page http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~silversmiths/65/455...

NEHGS genealogists and librarians, George Sanborn and David Curtis Dearborn, both state that the second wife of Godfrey Dearborn is still unknown. The Hampton meeting house shows a pew assignment for "Goody Derborn". Goody was an often-used shorthand for "Good wife". In stead of calling her "Unknown, Unknown", genealogists have adopted the use of the name, "Miss Goody".

This Siversmith website has Godfrey and "Ann unknown's" marriage occuring in Exeter, Lincolnshire. (There is no such place.)

On 24 Sep 1603 Godfrey was born in Exeter, Devonshire and later that same day he was Christened is Willoughby, Lincolnshire. (These towns are 240 mi. apart)

Use this site with caution.

Re: Reuben Go Dearborn

All I know about Charles Dearborn is that my husband's great-grandmother (Rebecca) had a brother named Charles. According to the 1870 Census of Boone Township, Crawford County, Indiana, he is listed in the Household of Reuben Dearborn and his wife Sarah as their 10-year old son. My husband's great-grandmother is listed as their 12-year old daughter.

The family moved to Eden Township, Ness County, Kansas apparently in 1879. The 1880 census shows the family living there (but Sarah has died) and the only boy left living in the household is the youngest son, Hugh, who is only 6. The girls are all living there but there is a mistake in the census records because Rebecca's name has a line drawn through it --she has married Henry Lanning and is living in the next household listed in the census (6-12 is the Dearborn residence and 6-13 the Lanning residence).

I have not done any further research on the boys--my interest was in my husband's great-grandmother and her ancestors--although I have recorded any incidental information that I found. David Dearborn gave me the following information:

David Lee Dearborn died in 1879 due to typhoid fever (1880 KS Mortality Schedule)

Lewis C. Dearborn (living 1870 near Ashland, Ness Co. KS, farmer) died 4 Feb 1880 of typhoid fever (Ness County Pioneer)

Apparently there is an account of the Reuben Dearborn family in "Requiem: In Honor and Dedicated to Our Pioneers That Their Names May Never Be Forgotten" by Mary L. Hall (1982) because they were Ness County, KS pioneers.

That's basically all I know at this time except for the information I have on the descendants of Rebecca Dearborn Lanning.

The Charles you found in the census in KS working for the railroad might very well be the brother of Rebecca but I have found no proof linking the two.

Sincerely, Diane

Bonny,

You need to be more explicit about the location for your Frank Henry Dearborn. Which Garland? The one in Alabama? Arkansas? Georgia? Iowa? Illinois? Kansas? Louisiana? Maryland? Maine? Missouri? Montana?

I haven't listed all of the states that have a Garland, but as you can clearly see, just stating "Garland" is obviously not sufficient information for your query. Which state? Which county (Maryland has two Garland's in different counties)?

If you expect anybody to help you, you really need to be as explicit as possible in detail.

-- Mary Taffet
Board & List Admin for Dearborn

Reuben's son Charles is a bother to me. First his time period roughly is similar to my great grandfather, Charles Dearborn and David Dearborn thinks he might be one and the same. I still am looking for actual proof since there are some discrepencies. THere is a Charles Dearborn who in the Kansas census is shown working for the railroad and may be the som of Reuben. If you drop me a note I will be happy to let know about my ggrandfather. He's somewhat of a mystery and a black sheep of the Dearborn family.

Nancy

Thanks for your info -- it actually helps a little. My Charles remains a mystery as everyone lists his birth place differently (Illinois, Mass, Kentucky, and Texas).
His age is different as well. The only thing I have found consistent with him is that he worked on the Railroad except when he was serving in the Spanish American War. My Charles surfaces about the time yours seems to have disappears but I can find no linkage between the two and I have no family member who can tell me much. My grandmother died in 1988 and my great aunt a little later.

The only other consistent thing is that he married my great grandmother. There are no family names from his side as far as I can tell given to his children.

Every little piece helps, even if the fact means that he isn't connected. If I keep eliminating what I know to be wrong eventually I might find something that is correct.

Thanks again,

Nancy

(Bruno, Butler Kansas) I am curious about any information of Charles Dearborn , born 1860 VT, RR labourer, Father born VT, mother born VT.

I looked in the 1870 Vermont census and found no listing of a charles who would then be 10. Anyone have any idea who he was, who his parents were and where he went after 1880?

Thanks!

Nancy

Thank you! I can check that out. I'm trying to track down my great grandfather and as far as I can tell, he spread a lot of lies and stories about stuff. THe reason I thought it might be a link is that my ggfather worked on the railroad when living in San Antonio. THe parents names don't match up but that may be another tangle.

Thanks again.

Nancy

If you are still loking for information, I found a message on the Genealogy.com Message Board (#288) posted by David C. Dearborn.
He states that Reuben was born in Switzerland County, Indiana, the son of Reuben and Rebecca Lee Dearborn, that he lost his father when he was a small child and his mother was appointed his guardian (Switzerland Count Probate, Order Book A:476; Order Book B:66,84,103). In the 1850 census, Reuben was at Cotton Twp., Switzerland County, IN, living in the home of his uncle David Lee.

The message further states that Reuben married (Switzerland County) on 8 May 1853, Sarah Jane Cole (b. Indiana 28 May 1834, died Ness County, KS, 18 Dec 1879.

There is more information in this message as well as many other messages on the family in the Dearborn Family Genealogy Forum.

Hope this helps.

I realize it has been a few years since this strand was posted, but I just recently began my search for family information. I am the gr gr granddaughter of Nancy's sister, Useba Dearborn. My mother took an account of Useba's life from her daughter, Daisy. Useba told this story: "In 1875, Reuben, Sarah, and their seven children left southern Indiana. The family was all ill with malaria [I think typhoid fever is probably more accurate.] They stopped in Nebraska and rented a farm. They were cold all winter and grasshoppers ate everything in the spring. Discouraged, they left and moved to Jewell Co., KS were they stayed one year. Rebecca and Nancy married at this time. In the fall of 1878 he homesteaded southwest of Laird, Ks [that's in Eden Twp I think] on South Walnut Creek. In the early spring of 1879, they dug a house in the creek bank. In December of that year Sarah became ill. David went for a doctor in Ness City and was thrown from his horse and died. She died as well. A few days later, Charles fell from his horse and died. They are all buried in Brown Cemetery southwest of Ness City, KS. Reuben worked hauling freight from Dodge City to Wakeeney."

I hope that helps fill in the gap for you.
