"DeArmond families of America" is often quoted as proof of noble French pedigree. I also long accepted the story as fact. Unfortunately, the author did not have internet access and DNA analysis. The overwhelming majority of countless variants of the name have native Northern Irish origins. The name is no longer used in Ireland in favor of McDermott. British scholars have traced the name back a thousand years in Irish records through various spellings. There is hardly any record of note of anyone in Ireland ever named d'Armand, nor can DeArmond be found originating historically in France. I welcome any informed debate on this subject.
