I clicked on RUSH county, IN and that took me to PARENT DIRECTORY for /~inrush. That takes you to a generic RootsWeb page.

Thanks, Teresa Dearmond Wagner

Dear Dianne,
Thanks for the prompt reply! I'm new at this & appreciate any help I can get. I need help determining how Robert Carson is related to Charles Houston (Kit) Carson [b 1809]. Going backward, this is what I have:
Leah Adaline Carson [b 1829] m William DeArmond [1826]; Leah's parents were>
Wm Carson [b 1799] m Cynthia Broadwell [b 1807]; Wm Carson's parents were>
Leah Reading [b 1777] m Robt Carson [b 1775??]. Is Robt Carson a cousin or an uncle of Kit Carson?
Thanks!
For centuries, countless numbers of men from Ireland and Scotland have hired out as mercenaries throughout Europe. They left their DNA imprint and surnames among many European descendants, as can be readily seen on the Y chromosome database websites and historical records. When the French are asked about DeArmond as a French name, they typically have puzzled looks. Until someone can show record of indigenous origin in France of the spelling, exclusive of d'Armand, the preponderance of evidence supports native Irish and Scottish origins of the name. The given names of your ancestors do not lend to suggestion of French cultural background in an area long disputed between France and Germany.

That is very interesting to read. Have you found any records in France or Germany to support that spelling? If you have been following posts about DeArmond ancestors on various forums, you will have noted that the British Isles are mentioned almost exclusively as the previous country prior to immigration and then, primarily Ireland dating from the 1700's. So if you can support this with historical European documentation, your claim falls outside anything mentioned in the more frequently mentioned published genealogies. Y chromosome haplotype test results of a male in your family with the DeArmond surname and matching that part of Europe would be strong supporting evidence of your point of view.

My ancestor, Arthur Rudolph DeArmond was born in 1861 in Alsace-Lorraine, France, came to America as a teenager to avoid military service. On the 1925 Iowa census, he gave his parents' names as Martin DeArmond and Kate Gottafroy (Godefroy?). Supposedly, his father died when Arthur was young and his mother remarried, so I can't get back any farther than that. I had assumed that his parents were French. Any ideas?

John,

If you have access to the US census, look at the 1850 and 1870 and 1880 Fulton county, Illinois census. You will find your John DeArmond b. 1837-1838. In 1850 he is living with his mother Elizabeth (Campbell). His father died a couple of years prior in 1848. This is the same family as the Rootsweb gedcom.

In 1870 he and Lettie are married.

In 1880 they are still in Fulton county, IL.

Whether the ancestry back to Ireland or France is correct I cannot vouch.

Did your grandfather John DeArmond have a brother Frank M. ?

If so that is Frank Marcelles DeArmond b. 1879 to John and Lettie. Lettie had 12 children 7 surviving in 1910.

Again I can't speak for the gedcom. But I am certain that your Arthur James was the son this John DeArmond b. 1804 in Northumberland, PA and Lettie Johnson and that John was the probably the son of Micheal as shown in the Gedcom.

These are not my DeArmond line, just trying to help

Scott

I was named after my father who was born in Byron, Ok. and is one of five children born to Arthur James DeArmond and Mary Catherine (Bullard) DeArmond. Their children in order of birth were Delmar Arthur DeArmond, Millie Mary DeArmond, Jessie Arlene De Armond, Harry Lee DeArmond and John Edwin DeArmond.
They lived in Byron, Ok., Amorita, Ok., and Cherokee, Ok.
I've not been searching for very long, and have found nothing on the internet concerning Arthur James DeArmond at all.
Family stories tell of the family comeing down from Illinois or Indiana but I have no names or dates or exact locations. I'm pretty much at a loss as to how Scot's-Irish Cherokee Indians came to have a French surname.
Looking thru all of the line listed, there is no mention of my grandfather or his sisters, not to mention that according to my grandfather the family is Highland Scott's and no French blood. The family line listed in those links are only one generation Ireland then France.

DNA from France?

If DeArmond originates from the d'Armands of Southeast France, then the Y chromosome markers of male descendants would trace to the Franks or Burgundian Germanic nobility who ruled the fiefdoms of France after the fall of Rome. Armand is the French translation of the German name of Herman. If you are a male with DeArmond as your surname, a simple 12 marker Y DNA comparison test will determine your haplogroup origin. If your markers match to Northwest Ireland and Southwest Scotland, then it is time to reconsider the romantic concept of your noble French ancestry.

Re: DeArmond's of Scotland

DNA results show a close relationship between Western Scotland and Northern Ireland dating back to the Dark Ages when Irish tribes invaded the Western Isles. DeArmond was a surname common among the Presbyterian Scotch-Irish immigrants to the New World in the 1700's, but fell out of use in Ireland and Scotland in favor of McDermott. It is considered to have derived from Duibhdhiormaigh (Doove-year-mee) of Donegal, but I note recorded suggestion that it was also derived from the given name Diarmada (Diermond) in both Ireland and Scotland. The tradition of Huguenot French origin became popular in America because of the vaguely French looking spelling and sound of the name. In order to accentuate the "r" sound, the preceding vowel was often capitalized, fueling the myth of French origin. Early Huguenot lists of names in Ireland are absent of anything resembling DeArmond or d'Armand.

No French origin for DeArmond

"DeArmond families of America" is often quoted as proof of noble French pedigree. I also long accepted the story as fact. Unfortunately, the author did not have internet access and DNA analysis. The overwhelming majority of countless variants of the name have native Northern Irish origins. The name is no longer used in Ireland in favor of McDermott. British scholars have traced the name back a thousand years in Irish records through various spellings. There is hardly any record of note of anyone in Ireland ever named d'Armand, nor can DeArmond be found originating historically in France. I welcome any informed debate on this subject.

High Kings of Ireland

Recent dna testing is revealing that some Dearmond surname variant males carry the Y chromosome marker SNP M222. This marker originated in County Donegal more than 3000 years ago and is notable today in Northern Ireland and Southwest Scotland. A great deal of interest and research is underway with this haplogroup, which is now referred to as R1b1b2e (formerly R1b1c7). The legendary "Niall of the nine hostages" and his descendents are included in this haplogroup. We are not descended from French nobility as some believe, but we can claim close family ties to the once High Kings of Ireland. Our name was likely once pronounced Duibhiorma, which evolved to Diarmaid-Diermond-Diarmi-Dermott-Deyermond-Dearmont-DeArmond-etc.

I have tested for 37 Y chromosome STR markers and I am awaiting results from my SNP haplogroup test. I have already joined the project as a member. My curiosity concerning the name, is why were there so many immigrants to North America using so many variations. If the name has Huguenot or Palantine origins, the ca.1700 European refugee lists for Ireland do not account for such, despite numerous books claiming otherwise. If anyone is certain of their Huguenot or European surname heritage, then post your Y DNA results. Northwest Irish Y DNA is quite distinctive and can not be confused with European hyplotypes.

Hi Shirley,
Is there a Margaret DeArmond anywhere in your Tennessee line? I'm trying to find the parents of my ggg-grandmother, Margaret DeArmond who married B.F. West on 8 Nov 1855 in Shelby Co, TN.
Their children were:
William Ard West, b. 1858
Edward Benjamin West, b. 1856
If any of this rings a bell, please let me know.
Thanks,
Crystal Burton
CrystalPRN@aol.com
