Hi, yes John & David (brothers)Deas are my ancestors and slave traders, introduced golf to America. My father is deceased and knew all the family history. I do have a family chart packed in storage. One of my brothers lives outside Charleston and knows all the history, I'll call him and ask. I thought the name Deas came originally from the name Dundas so I'm sure there is a connection. Was your ancestor David Deas (1772-75),the same merchant in Charleston S.C.who had golf clubs & balls shipped from Leith to Charleston in 1743 - and was thus the man who introduced Golf to North America ?

Also what's the Deas connection to Sir Walter Dundas of Arniston ?

I'll have to ask my mom or her mom about where to get a copy of the book. Mine is just a photocopy of theirs. I know that at one time there was talk about giving a copy of it to the Polk County Historical Association. I don't know if they ever did but I know the PCHA has a ton of information.

In the meantime if there's any other information you need, let me know. If I have it I'll gladly share.

Is that book available to purchase? Can you tell me who compiled it and how I may contact them? I am definitely descended from Benjamin and Jane Deese Nettles. I would love to know the source for connecting this Jane to my Jane, but certainly I know of some of the "circumstantial" evidence. Thanks!

According to the big family tree book compiled some years ago by relatives, there is a Jane who is the daughter of James and Sarah Spends Deese. It says she was born in 1854 and married a Benjamin Nerrles. Is this your Jane?

Also according to the book their oldest son James was born in Florida in 1832 so that would put them here well before 1845.

I don't have any supporting documentation but I do know a great deal of research went into this compilation. It isn't without errors, but I've found it to be more accurate than not. Most of the information in it is already available on this website here but if you want me to check anything else, let me know.

I found Sallie's father was David Culpepper who came from Ireland. I have more info on Sallie's children, etc., but need to know about her parents and Junius's parents.

William DEAS (1803-1876, his wife, Isabela BURNS and their 4 children arrived here in South Africa from Fife, Scotland. William's grandsons, William and James, began a very prosperous wagonmaker business in Oudtshoorn(about 450km from Cape Town. i have some information on the family as well as some pictures of William, James and of the premises on which they operate their business. I am prepared to share this information.

Maybe there are someone out there who could please furnish me with the details of William's (1803-1876)parents.

Cathi, in case you haven't found out the parents of Caroline Hall Deas, her parents were the Honorable George Abbot Hall and Lois Matthewes the sister of the Governor of South Carolina in the 1780's and sister in law of Thomas Heyward Singer of the Declaration.

It's wild because my grandfather...born in the the early 20's was George W. Deas....I always asked about his middle name...and the answer was always, "W. is my middle name". Now that I'm older, it's not true....maybe it could've been Walter? I don't know. My gradfather meant the world to me...that's all I can give..I can give more info if you need it

Our Margaret Thomson was born in 1845. I have many James Deas in the tree as it is a very common name in that area. Both Thomson and Deas are very common names and they intermarried very often with the same christian names. It is very difficult to trace your own ancestors because of the way the same names are passed down each generation. We have an instance of 3 children in the same family with the same name because the elder 2 died. If you have come across someone called Steve Deas in the boards, he may be able to help you because he was searching for many of the families with the name Deas at the time I was tracing my husband's. Good luck.

Sorry, but after having searched my database for the names you have given, there is no match in my files, so we are not part of the same family. Our Deas and Thomson family mostly come from the Buckhaven area. Good luck with your search.

I will have to look but I think Mary Michie was married to a different brother than David. I will see if I can find the info.If I am not mistaken ,there is also mention of Rebecca in the same records. It is a will that mentions Thomas and Henry Deas. I don't think I have seen anything re David.

I am part of an enormous family research group studying the Dyess/Deas/Dyas/Dyus (and other spellings)of our family name. We have many members and many trees but we are basically stuck around Barnwell, North Carolina in the 1700s. We have wills from that time period where Dyess becomes Deas, and I believe it involves your slave traders. Is ther any info you would care to share? We can also share what we have to see if it helpful to you.

My records only go back to a Robert Thomson born 6 Feb 1785 in Wemyss, who married Elizabeth Logie in about 1815 in Buckhaven and died 2 December 1866 in Buckhaven. I don't have records for Thomsons going back any further than that. When I did the searching, I found that it was difficult to tell all the families apart as there were so many with the same names. I was uncertain whether I had the correct ancestor. I do not have an Ann Deas at all in my records. Sorry not to be any further help.

I am trying to trace Thomsons who lived in Buckhaven, Kirkcaldy, Leven, Wemyss areas in 1700/1800. I have found who I think maybe a member of my family tree called Thomas Thomson who married Ann Deas not sure of date of marriage but Ann was born approx 1714 and Thomas born 1710 or 1712 both in Wemyss. They had 7 children. I find out info on Mormon website. I also found Ann Margueritte Deas father named Francois Deas and mother Anne Payoux in Britany in 1691. So that is possibly where family originated from.Any info you have I would be happy to share. Thanks Joan

There is an Emanuel Dees born in 1675, Monikie, Angus, Scotland. His father was ANDREW JOHN DEAS. I am not sure why but Andrew changed all his childrens last names to Dees from Deas. Andrew is the son of THOMAS DEAS who is the son of ANDRO DEAS. I hope this helps every one with the mystery of EMANUEL DEAS "Dees." Yes he was From Scotland, and he was also the first Deas/ Dees to come to the United States. He moved To James City County, Va. He died in 1723 in Isle of Wright, Va. Emanuel is also one of my many "Generations ago," Grandfathers.

Notes for James Deas:
1850 census has James 40 years old. Sarah his wife was 27.
1860 census has James 54 years old. Sarah his wife was 41.
1870 census has Sarah as 60 years old. Southern Historical
Families by Bodie says James may have been married before
because Sarah born 1823 would be too young, but if she finally
decided to tell the turth about her age in 1870, she was born in 1810.

Notes for Benjamin Wade Nettles:
Ben Nettles was a veteran of the Civil War. He served with Co. C, 50 Ga Infantry Regiment, CSA, enlisting on March 4, 1862. This Regiment was primarily recruited from Coffee County, Georgia. He filed a pension application on March 14, 1904 in which he claimed to have been born on the “10th day of July in Buford (Beaufort?) District, State of South Carolina in 1839” and that he was 65. On 24 August 1909, he filed another pension claim in which he states he is 72 and was born July 10, 1836 in “Barnard District, SC” which doesn’t seem to exist. Ben was apparently illiterate (he signed with an “X”). He states he was honorably discharged in October 1862 due to “chronic illness”. What he doesn’t mention is that he was also discharged due to “youth”, being underage and apparently 15 at that time. This would make his date of birth to be 1847. This is more consistent with the census dates.

I am descended from Jane Dees (I've seen it spelled Deas, Dees and Deese). I believe her parents were James R. and Sarah Spend Deas, who lived in the north Florida area in 1840-1870 era. Any idea if they are connected? I believe James' father was James R. Deas, Sr. Originally from Florida. Would love to exchange info.

Am researching the Stewart family and am interested in connecting with anyone who may know of or be descended from James & Agnes Deas Stewart, They were married April 1, 1919. I believe they had a daughter Margaret. My father and his brothers also visited this family during the war - sometime around 1942-43.
