DeBAIE, B.F. Calvin, B.Com., B.Ed., B.A., M.Ed. - 80 years, 90 Gaston Rd., Dartmouth, passed away after a lengthy illness February 14, 2003, in Dartmouth General Hospital. He was the son of the late Lenoir and Mary (Gilbert) DeBaie. Born in DeBay Cove, Halifax Co., on Easter Sunday, April 16, 1922, and where he received his early education in a one-room school. He was later educated at St. Francis Xavier University (B.Com.), St. Mary's University (B.Ed., B.A.), Dalhousie University (M.Ed.). He was a veteran of the Second World War and served in Canada, United Kingdom and Continental Europe as a Coporal in the services Infantry, Ordnance and Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. His first experiences as a teacher were in the one-room rural schools of Nova Scotia. He later went on to work as a storeman with Imperial Oil and as a ledgerkeeper with the Federal Department of Finance. On completion of university he worked as an Economist and Statistician with the Federal Department of Fisheries, as an auditor with the Chief Auditor's Branch, Department of National Defence, as deputy clerk and accountant with the then Town of Dartmouth from June 1956 to July 1959, as purchasing officer with the Department of Defence Production, as biologist-statistician and finance officer with the International Commission for the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries, as socio-economist with the Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries and finally as an instructor with the Nova Scotia Department of Education. During his career he had served on the Board of Directors of the John Howard Society of Nova Scotia and on the Board of Directors of the Harbour City Credit Union. He had been a past member of the American Sociological Association, The Canadian Sociology and Anthropology Association, Community Planning Association of Canada, American Society of Criminology and American Statistical Association. He was currently a member of the Writer's Federation of Nova Scotia. He was responsible for initiating many papers on the fishery, a special paper on the apple crop in Nova Scotia, statistical bulletins and base books for the international fishery (ICNAF), and several sociological research papers. He had performed many volunteer services and assisted numerous people during his lifetime. A greater part of his life had been as a Roman Catholic and was a member of St. Clements Parish Church, Dartmouth. He is survived by several nieces, nephews and close friends. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Lyla (Mrs. John Buggie), Bernice (Mrs. Joseph Bellefontaine), Alvona in infancy. Visiting will be 7-9 p.m. Sunday in Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen St., Dartmouth. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Monday, February 17, in St. Clements Roman Catholic Church, Gaston Road, Dartmouth, Rev. Robert Floyd officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will be held at a later date in Woodlawn Cemetery. No flowers by request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
