History of George W Debolt and Sarah J Wiggins

I do not know what book this was published in, so I can not give reference. But there was an article written about this families life in Todd, Co.

Attached is a single page of the text and here is it transcribed:

Thursday, April 29, 1943
Long Prairie and Round Prairie

In the year 1870, there came from Indiana along with the Hossier migration, George W. Debolt Sr. and his family. Mr. Debolt took a homestead in Eagle Valley Township and while he never had an actual residence in Long Prairie, he was closely associated with the roads and bridges along the Long Prairie River, he being an expert bridge builder before coming to Minnesota. Four of his sons, Thomas, Levi, Isaac Newton and Charles P, were residents of the village for many years. George W. Debolt was born in 1822 and grew to manhood in Indiana. When the Civil War came on, he enlisted in the 156th Regiment of Indiana Infantry and was discharged at the close of the war. Five years later there was a very considerable movement among his neighbors and relatives in Indiana to find homes in Minnesota, and Mr. Debolt joined the movement. This group of settlers came by the conventional covered wagon method of transportation and took homesteads in Hartford, Ward and Eagle Valley Townships. Mr. Debolt homestead was in Eagle Valley, but his services were in such high demand to make bridges that he was a well known figure in all of the settlements. He built the bridge across the Long Prairie River six miles west of Long Prairie and this bridge was long a landmark known as Allee’s Bridge after Daniel and Albert Allee, pioneer residents in Reynolds Township. He built the bridge across the same river between Long Prairie and Browerville. This bridge was long a pioneer landmark referred to as Lanphear’s bridge. In the later years he built another farther down the river, and we have the impression he rebuilt the old Walt Bridge at Old Hartford. While building the Lanphear Bridge, one of Lanphear’s sons, who was working on the bridge, was drowned. The Long Prairie River at the time carried a large volume of water and a river to be taken seriously.

Few settlers had money and it was common for settlers to seek employment after getting settled, and this the Debolts did. After the claim was located and a cabin built, Mr. & Mrs. Debolt secured employment in Wright County, leaving the children to keep the house and take care of the home and the parents returned to the claim in the spring of 1871. Mr. Debolt was a public spirited citizen. He was associated in such efforts as could be made at the time to improve the neighborhood. We believe that he was one of the original petitioners for the formation of the Clarissa High School.

In 1844, George W. Debolt married Miss Sarah Wiggins, and to this marriage were born the following children: Susan, who married Jacob Sutton, and was one of the pioneer women in the region north of the present village of Clarissa; Mary Ann, who married Joseph Fisher and lived in Long Prairie and Eagle Valley Township; Andrew, who died in Indiana before the family left the state; John W., who married Lucinda Dean and was long a resident of the settlement at Old Hartford; Frances, who married first Mr. Stover, and second to Mr. Shinner; Edwin B., who married Margaret Fisher; Levi P., who married Laura Sarff, and lived some years in Long Prairie; Thomas, who married Miss Theresa Cates, daughter of J.H. Cates, and resided for many years in Long Prairie; Irene, who married John Senti, and resided for many years in Moran Township; George W. Jr., who married Hattie Cates; Louisa, who married John Morris Sarff; Henrietta, who married Elder Strong and moved to Medford, OR; Charles P., who married Ada Lake and for nearly a half-century had been a resident of Long Prairie; Isaac Newton, who lived in Long Prairie, and then moved to Clarissa, where he died a few years ago.

In 1886, Mr. Debolt was taken sick with what he doctors called inflammation of the bowels, and died. In this age, his life would probably have been saved by an operation for appendicitis, but such treatment was unknown then.
-------

Of the children of George and Sarah Debolt. Thomas was the first to take an active part in Long Prairie matters. He was born in Randolph County, Indiana, July 14, 1858, and was 12 years old when his parents moved to Minnesota. He grew to manhood in the neighborhood of his father’s homestead and when a young man married Theresa Cates, the daughter of Jairus H Cates, a pioneer of Moran Township. Thomas homesteaded a tract of land in Moran, but did not remain there many years. In a letter to us written some years ago, Thomas gave a vivid description of life as he remembered it in that part of Todd 70 years ago.

He said that the first flour mill he saw was the mill of Alexander Moore at Little Sauk and the saw mill of was that of Herman Vennewitz at Long Prairie, and that his father was kept pretty busy helping settlers construct bridges. It seem that the vicinity of the Debolt home was one well suited for hunting and many hunter came there in the fall and stayed with the Debolts. He remembers that he saw 75 deer hanging to limbs of trees near his fathers cabin when the hunters were hunting in the neighborhood.

With such a large family home, Thomas had to get employment while he was a boy. He secured work with John Wait on the steamboat plying between Long Prairie and Motley. There were many obstructions in the channel near the Fish Trap Rapids and Tom wrote he had to go under the water every day. He remembered that he drove a team to take the first settlers up the Eagle Valley among them Charley Pearmine and Charley Schafer. Of those who were with him on the steamboat were John Wait, Ed Getchell and Z.V. Booth. He remembered sleeping out of doors one winter night, when he scraped the snow from the ground, built a log fire to warm the ground and then slept where the fire had been. He had many Indians for neighbors, but they were all friendly. Leaving his homestead in Moran, he moved to a farm south of Eagle Bend in 1888, where he followed stock raising for a time for at time on vacant lands in that vicinity; but the settlers can in so fast that there was no range for his cattle. He moved to Long Prairie and bought Henry Williams’ wood sawing business and dray line. Another dray line in town was owned by S.W. Greenwood and the two lines were consolidated. In addition to draying, Thomas engaged in house moving until 1901, when he sold out his interest and removed to Alexandria. The following year, 1902, he sold his interest in Alexandria and went to the state of Washington to engage in the bicycle repair business with success. In 1910 when the writer visited him at Puyallup, WA he found the business being operated by Mr. Debolt and his son. Roy.

In 1877 Thomas Debolt married Miss Theresa Cates and to this marriage were born the following named children; Stella, who married Delbert Booth, the son of Z.V. Booth, who has been frequently mentioned in these articles; Leroy, who married Bertha Backe; Nellie, who married a Mr. Taylor.

Mrs. Theresa Debolt died at Puyallup, WA February 19, 1935. Mr. Debolt still resides in Payallup

------

Charles P. Debolt, one of the younger sons of George W. Debolt, was born October 10, 1869 at Union City, IN and was but a few months old when his parents came to Minnesota. The older children of the family were left at the Debolt homestead to look after the claim while the parents found employment in Wright County, MN the first winter. Charles P. was one of the younger children that remained in Wright County the first winter. In the spring the whole family was reunited at the Debolt Cabin in what is now Eagle Valley Township. Charles P. worked on the home farm until he was 17 years of age, at which time his father died and Charles set out to make his own way in the world. With his younger brother, Newton, he went to Dakota to work and from there went to Minneapolis, where they spent four years, and then came to Long Prairie. For a time Charles P. worked on a dray, and then engaged in draying on his own account. He also opened a livery stable which he continued for seven or eight years. He then served as village marshal for nine years. Following this he went to Itasca Count y, MN and tool a homestead, where he resided until making his final proof of residence. After this he returned to Long Prairie and engaged in cement construction work, following this work for a number of years. After this he was engaged as caretaker of the Evergreen cemetery which is a position he still holds.

In 1901 Charles P. Debolt married Miss Adrella Lake, the daughter of Jefferson Lake, a pioneer resident of Reynolds Township. To this marriage were born the following named children; Eldred, who has distinguished himself in educational work; Inez and Vesta G.

------

Isaac Newton Debolt, the youngest son of George W. and Sarah Jane (Wiggins) Debolt, was born in Eagle Valley Township on January 8, 1872, and substantially his whole life was passed in Todd County. When he was 15 years of age his father died and he with his brother Charles P. went to Dakota to find work. From Dakota they went to Minneapolis and remained for a year and then went to Clearwater, MN and later to Long Prairie. On October 29, 1890 he married Miss Jennie Swanson and for a time they resided on a farm in Moran Township, and then moved to Long Prairie, where they remained for a time before removing to Clarissa. For the next 24 years he served a rural mail carrier out of Clarissa. This position he held until his failing health compelled him to retire and four months later died. To him and Mrs. Debolt were born the following named children; Miller Debolt of Staples; Chester Debolt, killed in France during World War I; William Debolt, who married a Miss Fisher; Mrs. Harry Yeager of Princeton, MN; Oliver Debolt, who resides in Tacoma, WA.

Isaac Newton Debolt passed away March 27, 1931

------
Levi Debolt, son of George W and Sarah Jane Debolt, was born in Indiana before the family came to Minnesota.

His maturity was attained in Todd County and his early years were passed assisting the family. On January 1, 1876 he married Miss Laura Ann Sarff and to this union were born the following named children; Vernon, Mrs. Elmer Frank, William, Mrs. Harry McDonald, Irvin and Charley. He was a member of the United Brethren Church

We have sketched briefly the careers of the children of George W. and Sarah Jane Debolt, who at some time made their residence in Long Prairie. While not spectacular, they as a family were substantial and good citizens.

Sorry I seemed to have missed this post before. According to my records, you are speaking of George DeBolt, b. Sept. 28, 1832, in Butler Co. OH to Michael and Nancy Saunders DeBolt. He married Mary Emmaline Webb Nov. 22 1821 in Franklin County, IN. Census records show him in 1860 in IN as druggist; 1870 Moulton TWP Appenoose Co. IA; in 1880 and 1900 in Utica TWP, Seward Co. NE, and 1910 in St. Petersburg, Hillsborough CO FL as widower living with sister Nancy DeBolt Bissell. Three children--William O, b. 1858; Walter H. b. July 27, 1860; and Clifford Malcolm, b. May 1873. Mary died abt. 1908 in Seward Co. NE, but have no death date for George (my great uncle). I hope you had already found this info.
Karen DeBolt Ansley

I am descended from George DeBolt who married Elizabeth Teagarden abt 1777. Their son George married Mary Rider (my ggg grandparents). I stared at the genealogies in "Greene County, The Tenmile Country" for a couple years before it finally clicked! 1884 History of Wyandot County says the elder George (D.) and his brother Nicholas were captured by Pottawatomies at ages 8 and 6. George returned after 9 years, being sold to the Senecas, Nicholas remained with his captors and became a chieftain. I have read many variations of this story and wonder what you may know of it? Any DeBolt info you care to share is greatly appreciated

Elizabeth Debolt (b. 5/8/1850 in WVA) was my great-great grandmother. She married Hugh Frazier Harrison and lived in Missouri (around the Missouri counties of Franklin and Crawford). She died 10/1/1929 (unfortunately trying to beat a train accross the tracks). She is buried in I.O.O.F. cemetery in Sullivan, Missouri. (I think she remarried a man by the name of Delcour after Hugh's passing, as her toomstone says "Elizabeth (Harrison) Delcour", however, I am just beginning my research so I haven't determined that yet). The link to her death certificate is below (free site). I'm trying to determine how many children she had but for sure there was Benjamin Frazier (my great-grandfather), William Elery, Kathleen, Kathrine, and Ethyl May.

http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/r...

I would be very interested in your information. I am a direct descendant of Henry DeBolt to Benjamin Debolt to Samuel Marks Debolt to Samuel Marks Debolt Jr. I'm particularly interested in information about Nicholas Debolt and the lineage of his wife, Elizabeth Brown. Thanks, in advance!

Suzanne Cottraux

My DeBolt line--father, Richard E. DeBolt (Dorothy Cranor DeBolt), grandfather, Elmer A. DeBolt (Anna Gradie Gardner DeBolt), great grandfather Wyatt Saunders DeBolt (Elizabeth Silvey DeBolt), great great grandfather, Michael DeBolt (Nancy Saunders DeBolt), great great great grandfather Henry DeBolt (Mary Gerrard), great great great great grandfather, Nicholas DeBolt (Elizabeth Brown Black). This line has been a puzzle; we can't really get back much farther than that--we think Nicholas was the son of a George DeBolt. As far as we can determine, we are not directly linked to either of the other two major DeBolt lines. If you wish to exchange info, contact me at kansley@classicnet.net Karen DeBolt ansley

The George DeBolt who was son of Michael and Nancy Saunders DeBolt, was not married to Sarah Jane Wiggins, but to Mary Webb. The other George W. DeBolt in this line was the son of George John and Rachel Clawson DeBolt, and grandson of Henry DeBolt. These two Georges were cousins, both their fathers being the sons of Henry and Mary Gerrard DeBolt. In addition, Michael and Nancy had 11 children. As far as I know, George W. and Sarah Wiggins DeBolt do not connect into this line. I also have extensive info about Henry and Mary and their children for four generations. I am always happy to share with "cousins." Contact me at kansley@classicnet.net Karen DeBolt Ansley

I know her birthdate was 25 November 1816 (based on death records) and from census records, it appears she was born in Ohio...yet I just can't seem to find any connection between the male Morrises listed, and her. Still hoping someone might have some information!

Suzanne

I'm looking for more information about Nicholas DeBolt, born in our around 1745 in Lancaster, PA. He is the son of George DeBolt, born in our around 1720 somewhere in Alsace-Lorraine (I would LOVE more information about his lineage).

Nicholas DeBolt is my g-g-g-g-grandfather. I'm also very interested in learning more about his wife, Elizabeth Brown, as well as any further information about Nicholas's supposed death in the Battle of Brandywine in 1777. You can e-mail me at scottraux@aol.com. Thank you, in advance, for your help!

Benjamin and Sarah had my great grandfather, Samuel Marks DeBolt. I am also interested in any further information about George DeBolt, arriving from Alsace-Lorraine.
Sarah Marks and Benjamin DeBolt in Butler County, Ohio mid-1800s

I need help solving a family mystery! My gggrandfather, Benjamin DeBolt, lived in Butler County, Ohio (Miltonville) and first married Amanda Shaffer, with whom he had many children. She died in 1853. He then married (though I can't find a record) Sarah Marks in 1855 and in 1862, they had my gggrandfather, Samuel Mark DeBolt.

On the 1860 census, Sarah is living with Benjamin DeBolt, as are her sons William Elsay Marks (b. 1845 or so) and Isaac (b. 1846 or so). On the 1880 census, Benjamin,Sarah, William E.Marks, and Samuel Marks (their son) is listed. William E. is indicated as "stepson".

I cannot find ANY information about Sarah Marks other than that she's listed on the 1850 census, in Butler County Ohio, with her three sons but no male head of household. Was she widowed? Divorced? Never married? I also know she was born in Ohio.

Given Benjamin's stature in the community (tavern owner, blacksmith, member of a citizen's brigade, etc.), one would think Sarah has a reputable background, but I'm at a loss for information!

If someone can help me with this mystery, I'll be able to sleep at night! Thanks!!

Hello, while I am not researching this particular Benjamin Debolt, I did find reference on Ancestry.com that Benjamin Debolt born 1803 in Butler County, Ohio son of Henry Debolt and Mary Gerrard married first to Amanda Shaffer on July 17, 1828 in Butler County, Ohio. He then married Sarah MORRIS on June 25, 1855 in Butler County, Ohio.

Is it possible that her maiden name is Morris and not Marks?

I am actually researching the Benjamin Debolt who was born 1810 in Pennsylvania to Nicholas Debolt and Margaret Stephenson. My Benjamin was married to Darcus/Dorcus Wood. His wife died in April 13, 1855 at the birth of their last child and my great-great-great grandfather John T. Debolt.

In Christ,
Melissa

Hello, does anyone on this list know if Nicholas Debolt (1762/1775-1861) served any military service. Nicholas was the son of George Debolt, Sr. (1725-1785).

Nicholas lived all of his life in Pennsylvania, Fayette and Greene Counties.
Hi June, please hook me up. I would love to see that letter. Could your contact e-mail me a scanned copy of it. Do you have a copy of the family info for George W. and Sarah (Wiggins) DeBolt? Could you e-mail it to me? I would like to piece this together. My great grandmother was Estelle Clarinda DeBolt. Her dad was Thomas DeBolt, son of George Washington and Sarah (Wiggins) DeBolt. I would really like to see that letter also. Thank you very, very much.

Glenn Debolt - Mystery Man

Hello! My great grandfather Glenn DeBolt was born in West Union, OH July 15, 1895. I believe his parents were also born in Ohio. All I can find on him is a 1930 census and a WWI Draft Registration Card. He is a dead end and I would appreciate it if anyone else might have some more information. I think he had a brother Charles who lived in Belvidere at one time. Other than that he is a mystery, any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
