He was a Solomon DeBow of Smith or Trousdale Co.TN (lines changed)but the court house records were burned. There are two Solomon DeBow cousins about the same age. 1) Solomon DeBow married Nancy Murphree (daughter of Dr. Archibald Murphree)and was a doctor in New Orleans. My G-grandmother told family her G-grandfather was a doctor in New Orleans. 2) Solomon DeBow married to Elizabeth Caruthers (daughter of Samuel Caruthers -who got a NC Military land grant of 8A in Lincoln Co, TN in Feb 22,1816.) I am interested in related records of these families.

I am researching the family of Hannah DeBow who married Charles Handlen. Supposedly they both died in 1830 of an epidemic and left five children - Nancy, Hannah, Rachael, Mary and Hugh. I know that Rachael married Thomas Brooks. They are from Pequannock, NY. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Joni

Debow/Sanford

Well I am glad to see something is in writing regarding this family. Some man contacted me years ago, and stated that he was descended from Capt John Sanford and REbecca Debow his wife, of Pompton Plains, etc. Much of his attributions sounded more like he meant John Debow (due tot he death date) because John and Catherine Debow Sanford were still alive in 1850. The truth of the matter is that John and Jane (Van Ness) Debows daughter CATHERINE married John Sanford and they had 10 children. Their third daughter named after her grandmother, Jane, married Stephen Carman and had a daughter Elizabeth Carman.

My 3x Great Grandfather was Benjamin Debow Whitaker(born abt 1803 in London). I assume his father was Whitaker and mother was Debow. Looking at the history of the name, I see it's French in origin, and I'm wondering if I am perhaps descended from Huguenots. I can't find any info on his birth or parents.
Can anyone help me with my search?
Thanks

I am seeking family members of the DeBow family. My father's family is from Tennessee. I know that we had some relatives in Kentucky. My father was one of five children, Claude, Clyde, Teresa, Carl, James, and Floyd. They were residents of Obion County Tennessee and lived in the city of Union City which is located near the KY border. My great grand father lived in Henning Tennessee (outside of Memphis) and worked for the railroad. You can contact by emailing me: bcdebow@yahoo.com.

Thanks, Brendah

Re: Will of John Debow died 1817 Morris Co NJ

Susan: Thank you for posting this transcript of the Will of John Debow. I took a haitus from doing my Debow ancestors and have just started to continue researching them. I'm thrilled to find this information!

This John Debow was my 6th great grandfather. He is also recognized by the DAR FYI of anyone who decends from him and wishes to become a member.

The given name John has continued in our family through my generation. However, the last person of the Debow surname in my direct line was my grandmother from Staten Island.

We decend from this John Debow through his son John > grandson John > great grandson James > great-great grandson John > great-great-great granddaughter Lillian, my Grandma.

I would LOVE to get a copy of my 6g grandfather's will for my own records.

You say you have this paper. By that, do you mean you have a transcript of the will or a photycopy of the actual will?

Where, specifically, can I send to for a copy like you have?

And also, the Pompton Plains DRC Interment list: Is this on microfilm and if so, what film # would I need to order at my local FHC to look at and pull an image of the entry from? I would like to add a copy of this to my records, as well.

Do you have other Debow information you could share?

Just a point of interest, my Grandma wrote her maiden name as "De Bow". And two of her sisters are buried as "De Bou". This "De Bow" form of the surname seems, at least, to go back to her father John. Who made the change, I don't know.

They are listed in the 1880 census with their children; Egbert, Lera (later became a physician - believe there are no children), Jettie, and Vida. Joseph Page is listed as living there too. He's apparantly the father of Samuel and was b. abt. 1798 in NC. Vida was my great great grandmother. I can share descendent information from her.

Looking for Debow Family Decendents - New York

I'm looking for decendents of the Debow family of Ontario County, New York.

Jefferson T. DEBOW born October 1870 - NY, son of James C DEBOW and Lusette (maiden unknown) . He married Blanche M. HARRIS, born February 1876 - NY, daughter of William Bruce HARRIS and Kate (maiden unknown). Jefferson and Blanche had two daughters, Maude M. DEBOW, born November 1896 - NY, and Wilma, born February 1900 - NY.

I believe that Maude M. Debow married Spencer TOOEY of Geneseo, NY about 1920, and died in Florida in 1977.

The younger daughter, Wilma DEBOW, was the only survivor of an axe murder that took place in Victor (Ontario Co.) New York in 1918. Wilma's uncle, McClellan MOSHER, husband of her aunt, Addie HARRIS - MOSHER, and her cousin, Blanche MOSHER, daughter of McClellan and Addie MOSHER, were murdered by their farm hand. Wilma DEBOW was injured, but narrowly escaped the murderer.

Does anyone have any information in regards to this family? Whatever happened to Wilma and Maude DEBOW?

Please send replies to the following email address;
lindasue1@adelphia.net

Hi Linda -

Thanks for your detailed response. There is a lot of good information and suggestions in there!

Sounds like we have two specific areas of interest regarding DEBOWS:

1. What is the connection between the Northern New Jersey (Pompton Plains) Debows and the Southern New Jersey (Monmouth Co/Ocean Co) Debows?

2. What exactly was the story/situation of those land documents so many Debow descendants were asked to sign?

Regarding the land documents, my mom didn't keep or can't find her copy. But I've been corresponding with a newly found "cousin" who does have a copy, and has promised to send me a copy (I'm interested in seeing all of the names listed so I can check against the descendant files I've been putting together). What I haven't done (and should do) is just ask her how they describe the land in the documents so we can see what land it was! (I've had this theory that it has to be something "big" for them to have put SO much work into finding a chain of descendants -- possibly even connected with Six Flags Amusement Park since it is so close?? or maybe something to do with the nearby Military Base?? I may be totally off here though).

On the first point, a different newly found "cousin" recently went to one of the historical societies or libraries in Monmouth Co and copied two documents from the "Debow" folder there that contain some very interesting information. Perhaps we can use it to help in figuring out the answer to question #1. I will email those documents directly to you (I transcribed them to Word so they are easier to send). I will also post them on this list (will be hard to read, but might help out someone searching).

Look forward to working with you on these puzzles. Liz

It lists Samuel DEBOW and William COOK at 32 Commerce Commision produce dealers.

I would like to know know more about the family of this newly discovered relative. If he is John DEBOW's uncle then Samuel would be a brother to James.

Is anyone descended from Samuel DEBOW of Newark?

I, too, am researching the DEBOWs of NJ and I've just this afternoon stumbled on a site which contains information about Rachel and Garret DEBOW. The site is: http://www.waltervanness.com

I have also gleaned information from the Mormon Church site www.familysearch.org and a couple of other family trees here at Ancestry.

All of this information is just recent, within the past week, to me so I offer it here to you with the caveat that I have not as yet obtained the actual supporting documentation to prove the accuracy. I can only hope that the researchers who submitted this information to the various sites did check and verify the accuracy of the information.

1.Rachel DEBOW b.26 Sept 1808. Her parents were Capt. Garret DEBOW and Hannah VAN NESS. Garret and Hannah were married before 1790.

2. Garret DEBOW b. 10 March 1767 d. 8 July 1848.
Grace DEBOW daughter of James DEBOW and Alice BEVANS of Richmond, Co NY

Grace DEBOW and her two sisters are one of those mysteries we all encounter in our research. I do not know what became of Grace, her sisters or mother. Grace would have been my grandmother's great aunt.

Grace DEBOW was born in NY in 1881 to James DEBOW and Alice DEBOW nee BEVANS. At the time the family was living in Travis, Staten Island, Richmond Co, NY. She was the third child of five born to James and Alice.

Siblings of Grace were:
John DEBOW b. abt 1870 NJ d. abt. 1920 NY -My great grandfather
James Allen DEBOW b. 1875 NJ d. ?
Minnie DEBOW b. 1886 NY d. ?
Martha DEBOW B. 1889 NY d. ?

Grace's father, James died sometime after Jun-July 1888 by my calculations but I don't know his exact year of death. He last appears on the 1880 Richmond Co. census and the 1900 census clearly lists wife Alice as a widow.

I can trace Grace and her sisters only until the 1900 census for Richmond Co, NY at which time she was living with her widowed mother and two sisters on Chelsea Road, Travis, Staten Island, NY.

By the 1910 Richmond Co. census she, her mother and sisters are gone. I suspect, but have yet to confirm, that the four of them left Staten Island for the town of Ramapo, Rockland Co, NY where Alice DEBOW nee BEVANS was originally from.

I would love to know what became of Grace, her mother-my 2 g-grandmother Alice DEBOW nee BEVANS and her sisters.. If anyone is decended from these ladies and can solve this mystery, I would love to hear from you and share what information I have on the BEVANS and Grace's brother John's line.

My two emails are: miyukichanx1999@aol.com and miyukichan0987@yahoo.com
We are indeed related. Your Dad and my Grandma were siblings; you're my Mom's cousin.

And John DeBow of the Revolution is a several times great grandfather of ours. I've been looking into the DAR with respect to him and they already have him in their index so I will be sending for a copy of their records to see what else I might learn about him and other branches of our DeBow's.

I'll be in touch

Linda

Re: looking for information on Minerva DeBow

Robert W. Debow and Naomi Gosnold Debow bought Public land in the 1840's in Jasper County Illinois. By the 1850 census he was dead. Naomi and the 5 children are listed. Josaphine is the youngest and she is my great grandmother. She was 40 year old "old maid" when she married Levi Yount and had one child, Arazillus George Yount. Minerva was listed at 11 years old on the 1850 census. On the public land papers it said they were from Edgar County, IL.
Hello Charles, I see you are a Sayles. The DeBow family you have in your old bible is from our family that moved from PA to northern Indiana. The Sayles family moved at the same time. Louis O. DeBow married Mahala Sayles. Below is her obituary: The attached photos are of the head stones that are located in a church cemetery in LaGrange County, Indiana. I took the photos.

Obituary-The LaGrange Standard September 1, 1904

Mahala Sayles DeBow was born in Tioga County Pennsylvania, November 6, 1830 and died at Goshen, Indiana, August 24, 1904 aged 73 yr. 9 mo. and 18 d.

When but a girl she came with her parents to Indiana in which state she has lived nearly all her life, being one of the pioneers of LaGrange County. In 1852, she was united in marriage to L. O. DeBow, then of Greenfield Township. To this union were born seven children, four of whom survive her. Her husband preceded her to the spirit world a year ago and since this time she has lived with her son John H. DeBow of Goshen. Her death was due to cancer of the stomach and came as a relief after many months of intense suffering. She was for several years a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and died trusting in that God who has been her stay through many years of trial and care. She was a kind neighbor, a loving wife and a servant of God. Let us join together in common belief that her sorrows are over and that she has gone to her reward. To be with her children who have gone before and again to see her husband. To spend eternity with Him who said, "Come unto me all ye who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest."
