Hi Dawn, I live in Beckenham,Kent and also looking for Cornelius DeBruin (my maiden name was de Bruin). I have a marriage certificate for William De Bruin and Ann Sophia Stedman dated 13th May 1856, showing Cornelius De Bruin as the father - Profession - foreigner - unknown. I believe Cornelius may have been in the 4th Battalion 60th Regiment and according to his Discharge papers he may have been born around 1775. Also according to the Discharge papers he was born near or in the town of Markes in Holland. I'm thinking of contacting St. George's Church in Beckenham where the marriage of William took place to see if they have any further information.
Hope this is of some use.

Happy hunting. Sue
I have found some information with hints from someones tree, I dont know if its correct and want to compare it to your information, I was thinking if I could txt you my address you could photocopy and post your information, it will be quicker on your end to do than scan, and I like to have the information on paper and would print it off anyway? does this sound like a good idea?

You're looking for SA relatives. 3. You're still into Family Trees.
If it is you let me know. I am revamping the Family Tree (Now using Legacy7), updating photos etc. Also to let you know that sadly Betty Gibbs (W.R. Comrie's daughter)) recently passed away on the 8th August 2009. That leaves just one left of the original six children. (Stephen Comrie)
Let me know,

Shawn Comrie

I am replying to a post from 2001 so hope this is still relevant. Hyman Israel de Bruin was born in Amsterdam, Holland on December 24th, 1796 and married Rebecca Easton of Lincolnshire, England who was born March 28th, 1804. If interested I am able to relate some oral history of the Middleton and Huston families incl. the Huston petrified man
exhibit scandal in Nebraska, etc.

You must be a relative of mine, as Douwe and Maaike DeBruin are also my great-grandparents. I am the grandson of their oldest surviving son, Charles (Kos) DeBruin of Fair Lawn, NJ where Douwe and Maaike settled. Their home is still in the DeBruin family, currently owned by their granddaughter (Charles' daughter) Dorothy DeBruin.

Burial:

De BRUIN, Edward M. Jan. 24, 1830 - Oct. 15, 1899
Hillsboro Cemetery, Liberty Township, Highland County, Ohio
Cemetery Inscriptions of Highland County, Ohio by David and Jane McBride ©1954 page 210

_____________

SLOAN, HIRE & DeBRUIN, Attorneys and Councellors at Laws, Offices, Postoffice Building.--Among those strong legal firms which hold a conspicuous position in public affairs, and in matters of jurisprudence in this section of the State we notice, especially Messrs. Sloane, Hire, and DeBruin, whose offices are located in postoffice building in this city, with offices also at Winchester, Adams county, in this State. The individual members of this first are Ulric Sloane, John T. Hire, and E. M. DeBruin, gentlemen whose years of experience in association with many of the most important litigations of this and adjoining counties, and uniform success has naturally contributed to the fame of the bar of this country. Mr. Sloane, who about two years ago removed to Winchester, Adams county, and still continues one of the members of this firm, was for many years engaged in practice in this city. Mr. Hire is a native of this county, and after attending the public schools, spent about two years at the Lebanon Academy, and subsequently turning his attention to law, graduated from the law schools of Cincinnati, and commenced practice in 1875. He was about two years associated with his preceptor, Judge Gardner. In 1879 he was elected prosecuting attorney of Highland county, serving two years, and being re-elected, and owing to new law his second term was extended to three years. He also holds notary public commission, and is prepared to draw up and acknowledge wills, deeds, etc.; take depositions, protest notes, and transact all business requiring notarial seal. Mr. De Bruin is a native of Maysville, Ky, but has been a resident of this State since boyhood. He was admitted to practice in 1853, and first opened his office at West Union, Adams county. When the great civil strife aroused the patriotism of those of loyal blood, Mr. DeBruin stepped into the ranks Aug. 16, 1861 as a member of Company B, 33rd regiment, O. V. I., 14 A. C., and participated in the thrilling incidents of those historic years, receiving his honorable discharge Nov. 10, 1864. Returning to civil life, he resumed his practice of law, and in 1866, located in this city. He was chosen prosecuting attorney for Highland county in 1867 and re-elected successively in 1869 and 1871. He was subsequently elected auditor of this county, filling that position with credit for 10 years. With the exception of the time spent in the army and the filling of the above named official positions, Mr. De Bruin has devoted his attention to practice since 1853. The firm enjoys wide acquaintance and favor, and practices in both State and Federal courts.

Page 52/53 General business review of Highland County, Ohio : for the year 1892-3.
Please feel free to email me at smoon44@yahoo.com and I'll tell you what I know about Cornelius and Ethyl's family. Cornelius had a son named Lester... who in turn had a son named Daniel DeBruin. Daniel was the best man at my wedding!

That is my great grandfather. Unfortunately my grandma didn't have too much information on his or Ethel's family. When I was going through some of my grandma's things I did find out there are some cousins that eventually moved to South Africa although I'm not sure when and I'm not sure how we're cousins. I also remember hearing something of a cousin that is still in Holland.
