Hello Helen,

This is an exciting surprise! I currently live in Oshkosh and am also a descendant of Joel DeCamp. Joel is an interesting person and I’ve been trying to piece together his life. I suspect he was married twice, although I have never successfully identified where and how your descendant Gowin connects to mine - Barton.

As I mentioned, I suspect Joel married a second time to Matilda Bridge and they lived briefly in Green County, WI (southeast of Monroe). The Bridge family must have done homesteading in Green County, there were several of them in the county at that time. My Great-great-grandfather is Barton and he is the youngest of Joel's rather large family. Barton was born in Illinois (in the Schuyler County area south of Macomb, IL near Rushville), where there seems to have been other DeCamps. I'm not sure how they are all connected, quite possibly they are also all descendants of Joel's.

I am particularly excited to learn about how your ancestor and mine are connected, and I am happy to share any information you might need from the Joel-Matilda branch of that family. I am rather busy at the moment but it might be nice to try and connect sometime, perhaps over the January break (when the University is between semesters), I have more time. I will send you my work email addresses in case you’d like to meet sometime and compare notes.

Your very distant cousin,
Rick DCamp (GGG Grandson of Joel DeCamp

work: dcamp@uwosh.edu

I had the "Kimak" name from some notes that Barbrae gave to my grandmother back in the mid-1960's. It was after this period that I know that she went to Burlington, New Jersey, to do more extensive research. I can only assume that her contact with your family was as a result of the Burlington trip. I'd love to compare notes further and can share the information that has been gathered since that time.
DeCamp

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Paul W. DeCamp Sr., 81, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, in Washington D.C.

Memorial services were held Feb. 28. Burial will be at 1 p.m. April 14, at Arlington National Cemetery, with full military honors.

Mr. DeCamp was born Feb. 5, 1923, in Muscatine.

He graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in engineering and journalism, University of Dayton with a degree in physics, the USAAF Communications Officer School at Yale University, and technical and tactical Air Force radio countermeasures schools.

He was one of the pioneers of modern American electronics intelligence and warfare programs.

Serving at Fifteenth Air Force Headquarters in Italy during the latter part of World War II, he was one of a band of officers directing the attack on German air defense equipment, principally the infamous 'Small Wurzburg' anti-aircraft gunlaying radar. This effort, along with a parallel program in the Eighth Air Force in England, is widely credited with saving many B-17 and B-24 strategic bombers and their crews.

After a four-year postwar stint with the Iowa City Press-Citizen as a feature and technical writer, he was recalled to active duty as an ELINT (Electronics Intelligence) officer in the Korean War. Based in Japan through 1951, he flew a tour of combat ELINT collection missions over Communist areas in an ERB-29 'laboratory ferret', capturing high-priority threat signals, sometimes under enemy fire. A notable accomplishment was his acquisition of vital detail on target enemy signals by high-speed state-of-the art pulse-to-pulse photography of radar intercepts. He received numerous commendations and medals for his service, including the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf clusters.

For the next 30 years, he was a technical ELINT analyst and manager on the national level for Headquarters USAF and the National Security Agency. For most of this time he served on the U.S. national electronics intelligence committee and predecessor bodies. For three years he was the committee's chairman and an influential figure in Allied programs worldwide. For 10 years within the Defense Department he was functionally the U.S. chief technical ELINT analyst, frequently leading American delegations at Allied conferences guiding ELINT programs against Communist countries during the Cold War.

For six years following retirement from government, he was an ELINT engineer and consultant for BDM Corporation.

He was a senior member of the Association of Old Crows, the international electronics warfare body, also a contributor to and one of the subjects of 'The History of U.S. Electronic Warfare'. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Silver Spring, Md., for 40 years.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Rita Stransky DeCamp; eight children, Susan M. DeCamp, Paul W. DeCamp Jr., John M. DeCamp, James L. DeCamp, and Karen M. DeCamp, all of the Washington, D.C. area, Mary DeCamp Cuthbertson of Lexington, S.C., Dr. Ann DeCamp of Scotch Plains, N.J., and Joseph S. DeCamp of Highland Park, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, including Mary Ann Tooman, Frank Nelson and Ronald Schmarje, all of Muscatine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Addie Lindley DeCamp; twin sisters, Dorothea Nelson and Doris Schmarje; and a brother, Edwin DeCamp.

They lived at 667 Ingraham St. I have been unable to locate Emmet (and, presumably, his parents) in earlier censuses.

Wilson DeCamp
Leesburg, VA
Message Board Administrator

PA -> IN Decamp Roadblock (Help)

This is a modification of an earlier thread. My Decamp (also Decamps) interests stem from my mother who is a Decamps…from Evansville IN. I have traced my Decamp line back to my great-great-great gf Abraham Decamps who was born in PA about 1793. I do not know where in PA. He was in Indiana by 1817 which would make him one of the first Decamps in the state. He appears in the 1820 and 1830 US censuses in Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co., IN, which is right on the IN-OH boarder not far from Cincinnati and Hamilton/Butler Counties (both areas with a known Decamp presence). By 1840 Abraham had relocated to Evansville IN area (Union township to be exact) where he lived till his death in 1869. If there is anyone with Decamp families present in PA in the 1793 timeframe…that then moved west to OH or IN…I would be most interested in trying to make a link to Abraham’s past. I do not know who Abraham’s first wife was but two of his 8+ children were Elizabeth (b. ~1817 in IN) and David (b. ~1827 in IN). Happy to share information from Abraham to the present…anxious to get information from Abraham back.

Thanks,

David Fitzgerald
I can find no record of him in 1900, nor can I find any DeCamp's in Mississippi who were born in France (data from the 1930 census). Does anyone have further information about this family?

Wilson DeCamp

If your question is how the families are connected, please note from the first posting in this thread that Nancy DeCamp and Charles Lefebure were married on September 9, 1856. They had three daughters, two of which were married.

The descent from this couple seems to be as follows:

1 Charles Lefebure, b: 1835 in Canada, d: 1922
.. +Nancy Maria DeCamp, b: Abt. 1838 in OH, m: September 9, 1856 in Ross Co., OH, d: 1886
....2 Clara P.
Next time you have a question or query, please use proper sentence and letter structure. Your query is difficult to read. If you want answers and can't take the time to compose a properly structured sentence, why should others take the time to answer your questions. It's called being polite.

Hi. Actually it could be french or dutch/german:

Decamp surname:

1. Dutch and North German: from de camp ‘the field’, hence a topographic name, or a status name denoting a small farmer.

2. The surname Decamp is derived from the Old French word “champ” which means field, and literally means “of the fields”.
Hi. I have been thinking. One more thing that I forgot to mention is that my Elizabeth Decamp is supposed to be a full-blooded Cherokee Indian. My aunt insists that her father's mother, Artie Macie (Artemissia) Bechtel (daughter of John Bechtel and Elizabeth Decamp of Coshocton, OH), was half cherokee. My grandfather used to tell everyone this story also and he is not the type to tell tales. Do your Decamps happen to have any Indian blood?

Lynn (sorry for the first mis-spelling)

We have the same Charles Coleman/Catherine Norris ancestor. Just checking to see if you have the Coleman book that takes that line back, and even back farther with the Mapes line (William Coleman/Mary Mapes). If not, I can give you that info....

I believe that my husband's grandmother ( Grace Decamp Preston) is related to this family. Her family tree states that her great great grandparents were Morris Decamp (1799- 1890) and Rachel Learn (1799- 1877). Morris' parents were Jacob and Rhoda Decamp Pipes. Grace's tree is very basic so if you have any info on this line I would greatly appreciate it. Grace is 86 and I would love to present to her a detailed family tree. I know she would appreciate it. Thanks

Casey Preston
caseympreston@aol.com

Thanks for your reply. There is a book on the descendants of Laurent DeCamp that goes through the lineage, but I'm still at my brick wall. Lynn
