While at the library copying obits for someone, I managed to get a copy of the following obit. I'm not related to this person, but I thought I would post it in case it is helpful to someone.

Lowell Sun
Lowell MA
July 2, 1945

GUY R. DECATUR

WESTFORD - Guy Robert Decatur, a life long resident of this town, died Sunday at his home on Lowell road after a long illness. He was the son of Clarence R. P. DeCatur and Adelaide (Roberts) DeCatur, and was born Mar. 6, 1880, at the family homestead, where he spent his life. He was a member of the First Parish church, Unitarian, also of the Laymen's league and the Caleb Butler lodge of Ayer, AF and AM. Mr. DeCatur was a farmer by occupation and retired several years ago. He leaves two sisters, Mrs. Estella D. Prud'homme and Miss Luanna B. DeCatur, both of New Rochelle, N.Y., and Westford, and several cousins.

Dennis, thank you for the reply. I finally got myself straightened out :) I had seen parts of the will of Ann Decatur and assumed she was the wife of the only Stephen Decatur I knew of. I didn't realize his father was also a 'Stephen' and that Ann is Jrs. mother. I hadn't 'googled' enough when I was trying to learn more about SD.

The following has a nice account, more details than I had found before.

http://www.foundersofamerica.org/decatur.html

I was mainly interested as in Ann's will, she mentions Mary Gurney, wife of Francis Gurney, part owner of Gurney and Smith. My family had ties to Francis Gurney (Smith, Somers, and Ritchie families) and I was curious if there was a connection with the Decatur family, but it looks like they were just friends and business partners.

Thank you again, since they aren't actually related to my family, I guess that's all I need, unless you know of a more lengthly biography than the short one I linked to above.

regards,

melissa

I was born a Trought and most of my family were in the DC, Maryland, Virginia area, but I also have some relatives elsewhere. Do you have any info on the Trought side. I will be glad to give you what I have if you want it but I only go back to my great grandfather on the Trought side. Would appreciate anything you might have as I have a lot of names that I cannot connect yet.

Joan Trought Rentner

I'm doing some family reasearch on decatur's, but this information might help you on your seach of family members.
My father Carl Decatur was born in Monroe Louisiana in Dec 7
19?. His Father ( mother Oakland CA) and brothers are still living in Monroe.
My father's , father is about 90 now still ownes a corner store in Monroe. Look in the directory For Herbert Decatur, I'm sure they will be willing to help you on your search. Just a FYI these are the Decatur that was purchase during slavry from Stephen Decatur so this is a African American Family

I am one to believe that all the Decaturs are connected down the line somewhere. My grandfather's name was Julian Donaldson Decatur, Jr. I believe he was from TexArkana (The border of Texas and Arkansas). He made his home in Monroe Louisiana where he had up to 13 kids (that the family knows of - I believe my PA-PA was a rolling stone). However, it would be nice if someone out there knew anything about the Decatur's of the South. It is very possible migrated between the Southern States; it was pretty common for folk to do that in the early days. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Melissa I work in the field of military and not much in family’s but I was able to find that Susan was his 2nd wife I also was able to find that he had a brother by the name of John P. Decater and a sister by the name of Mrs. McKnight. Stephan’s funeral was held Friday March 24, 1820 I believe that Susan last name was Wheeler but don’t hold me to that? I get my info from the Library of Congress there is over 100 Items on Susan Decatur. The were many Debates in Congress over her Relief Bill, should Susan get $33,000 prize money and McKnight $10,000 or should it be the other way around, and Congress wanted to give John and his children sum of the prize money, and there were other Heirs that should have sum so the debate went on. But in the end Susan won. If this is family and you need more help let me know, but I give Military info only.
Dennis Segelquist.
p.s. he was also known as Stephen Decatur Jr.
