It is interesting to know of our connection Shannon. I have no pictures related to Ann Lumley or Daniel DeCow. There are pictures in the local history section of the Library at the University of Western Ontario but they are of Lucy Ann McGregor's parents and are likely of no interest to you. I have a cousin who has Douglas McGregor DeCow's medical diploma from McGill university but otherwise the oldest photos I have are of my grandmother Sophia DeCow as a 5 year old in 1890, her grad pic from nurising school 1912 and my grandparents' wedding picture from 1913.
I am decended from John Decou b. abt 1815 in Woodhouse, Norfolk County, Ontario Canada. He was married to Catherine Doan, b. 1822 and as I am kind of new at this, I'm not having very much luck linking him any of the Decou's further back. His son was James Elijah Decou who was married to Valdora McInally. If anyone has any information that can link my line back, I would be happy to share information that I have. I can't find a death date either for John Decou either!
Thanks,
Holly Wright

Katherine,

Thank you for the information. Yes, I incorrectly said the Decow's were of German descent, when I have learned that they were in fact French Huguenots. I have 19 Isaac Decows in my file, the oldest being of whom I believe you are referring to. Interesting web page (do a search for "Decou"):

http://www.westjerseyhistory.org/books/decou1/mtn17.html

How exactly do you fit in the family tree?
Melinda (and others)
Many of the DeCows are actually of French descent. They were Huguenots (French protestants who were persecuted) and came to North America in about 1686. There was a book put together in about 1912 that detailed the descendents of Isaac DeCow, who you may be related to. I am descended from Isaac DeCow (he would be my 9x great-grandfather). You can buy a photocopy of this book from Tuttle Antiquarian Books in Vermont (or you could about 5 years ago when I got my copy). If anyone is interested let me know and I can send you the contact information.
Katherine

Did you ever get an answer. My husband ggrandfather is John L.,
Melissa's brother. We have Melissa as being born in 1838. She married John Clark 3/16/1862. The book Houses of Elgin County says "the birthdate of Melissa does not fit very well with the age of her parents, she was not listed on 1852 or 1861 census, perhaps she was in London with her McGregor grandparents." Daniel DeCow was born in 1821, which would make him 17 at the time of her birth.

I would love to know your history. My records say her family was "scattered to the four winds." This was from a letter in 1921.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Donna

Harry,

You mentioned "Descendants of George DeCou", by Frances DeCou 1970.

This was my great-aunt Franny. She never married, and I was told she was the 'wild' one. She smoke and drank, unheard of in my great-grandfathers house.

She was a career woman, starting as a secretary. then becoming
what we would now call an Office Manager, and then starting her own transcription/typying service. She saved her money, bought her own house and worked from home. In fact, as a write this, it occurs to me that today we might say she was highly successful. I know her sisters (my grandmother among them) were very proud of her.

When I knew her she was living in West Hartford, Ct. near two of her sisters. They were always fun at family events.

Somewhere I have one of her drafts of that book you mentioned.

Eric

A book "The Genealogy of the DeCou Family" is available on line at Heritage Quest. It is searchable. Check with your local library for access, usually known as ProQuest.

My 7th great grandfather Richard Dell (c1660 - bef 1724) married as his first wife Elizabeth DeCou in Burlington Co., now New Jersey. She was born 25 Aug 1675, probably in Yorkshire England, daughter of Isaac and Susan (Ashton) DeCou.

Isaac arrived at Burlington NJ in the Ship "Shields". He died before 1692, as his widow Rebecca married Francis Davenport the 12th day of 8th month, 1692.

Isaac de Coux (De Cou) was of Huguenot descent. He & his 2nd wife, Rebecca, emigrated from Arvert, France, and arrived at New Castle on the Delaware in 1686. He settled at Newcastle MD on land bought of William Penn. The first meeting of Quakers in America was held at his house. He died shortly after his arrival & was buried at Chester. Isaac & his 1st wife, Susannah Ashton, had Jacob, John, Isaac, Elizabeth and Emanuel. Isaac Jr. & Jacob settled in Burlington County prior to 1690.

Death date, place from Descendants of George DeCou, by Frances DeCou 1970. See also LDS FR 16879/80 submitted by Mrs. Howard T. (Lucy A.) Bonnett, 314 E. Glenwood Rd., Lake Forest, IL 60045 (312) 234-4804.

-----------------------------------

There was a "Daniel Decow of Drax Abbey" mentioned in the will of David Beharrell, 3 Jun 1708 of Waghen alias Wawn, Yorkshire, named to be Tutor or Guardian of David's children, along with Samuel Beharrell, if their mother remarried. David's brother Isaac Beharrell married Jane Descamps in 1666 in Hatfield (Yorkshire?) and this Daniel Decow was probably her brother. Note that the name Decow is an English corruption of the French name Descamps. The towns of Goole, Snaith, Howden, Airmyn and Drax are all quite close to Wawn, 20-30 miles west of Hull, on the south side of the river Ouse.

My Decou ancestors came to Canada around 1798. John Decou/Decew was a captain in the war of 1812 and it was to his home that Laura Secord went to warn him that the Americans were coming. There are 2 towns in Ontario named after him - Decew Falls and Decewsville. There is a lovely park at Decew Falls on what was his property and the remains of the home. You can read about it and see the home at http://schools.tdsb.on.ca/dmthomson/secord/walk.htm and at http://www.heritagethorold.com/future.html

Have attached a couple of files. I live on the west coast in British Columbia

I knew George had written some books. In fact his daughter, my Great-Aunt Franny, had written some family history also. On her death many of her papers went to my father. And so to me. Somewhere I have a early manuscript of Along the Back Trail. Unfortunately, my Great-Aunt Franny was a transcriptionist so it is
all typewritten, instead of handwritten.

Somewhere I knew there was a Canadian branch, but I don't know much about your side. When, and why did your ancestor go to Canada? What have they been doing since?
We believe the first wife was Lucy Ann Lumley but we can't trace her but have heard she died in 1846. The children of the family of Daniel were John L 1841-1886, Duncan McG b 1845, Lavina 1847-1927, Daniel b 1849. Hannah 1853-1923, Abraham b 1855, Douglas McG 1857-1902 (Charles grandfather) Rose 1859-1863 and William 1864. Make what you will whose children were the first wife's or the second. We are still mystified and still searching. Betty

I found your message interesting as I am a direct decendant of Jacob Decow and Elizabeth Powell, through my Great Gandmother Ulah Payne. I am told that my lineage is through Jacob and Elizabeth's son Jacob who married Jane Duncan, their son John Decew who married Jane Thatcher, their daughter Elizabeth Decew who married William Cole, their son Christian J. Cole who married Angelina Harrington, their daughter Chloe Ann who married Robert Payne, their son William Henry Payne who married Lenore Bellenger who are my Great Grandmother's parents. I have these names, but am missing a lot of pertinent information such as birthdates and such. I would love to hear from you to share what information we can with each other.

Jennae Straw

Dear Betty,

Iona Cemetery, North side Talbot Road, Lots 1 & 2, Southwold Township, Elgin County, #137 - (broken stone, flat) In memory of Ann/ wife of/ Daniel Decow/ who...../......1873 [corrected to 1843].

I have the same children and dates that you have. My 3rd great grandmother was Melissa Ann Decow, born about 1840 to Daniel and Ann Decow.

Do you have information on Douglas McGregor? All I found on him was this:

"Dr. Douglas DeCow was a doctor in Montreal, where he was active in the Liberal Club. About 1899 he received an appointment to take charge of the Government Hospital in the Yukon. While there he fell seriously ill, and was forced to return east. He then lived quietly on the banks of the Richelieu. He died suddenly at Iberville, Quebec, age 45, leaving a wife and several children. None of them were named in his obituary." From the book Houses of West Elgin.

I would be interested if you have more.
Dear Gail,

Hope you can help.

My great grandparents were John Clark, b. abt. 1839 in Dunwich, Elgin Co., Ontario and Melissa Ann Decow, b. abt. 1841 in Southwold, Elgin Co., Ontario. They married March 16, 1862. In the marriage register her parents are listed as Daniel Decow and Ann. I viewed the 1861 Elgin County census and found a Daniel Decow with wife Lucy Ann and their children. Listed at the bottom was Melissa Payson, age 20, and noted as not a member of the family. The next year she marries John Clark and registers as Melissa Ann Decow with her parents as Daniel Decow and Ann. My mystery is was she taken in by the Decows and maybe adopted??? Was she a servant and just used the Decow name??? I would be most interested on anything you have on this family.

Anxious to here from you,

Melinda (Clark) Brasier
Enumclaw, WA USA
DeCou that was published in "Families" the journal of the Ontario Genealogical Society. As the article is on my computer, I could send it to you as an attachment (or if you are worried about viruses as a copy & paste into the e-mail message).

Cheers,

Bob McBride
E-mail: <bob-mcbride@heydon.com>
