Charles Dee from Bowling Green Kentucky

My grandfather's name was Charles Edward Dee. There was a tale that his name was Davis, but changed it to his mother's maiden name after the Spanish American War, from which he deserted. He was supposed to be from Bowling Green Kentucky, but we have never found any records of him. He was supposed to also be part Indian. Any information on Dee's from the Bowling Green Kentucky area would be appreciated.
