Our line that ended up in Sullivan County, Missouri actually has a John and Margaret... aka Johannes and Anna Margaretha Forstern Etter Deeds. They were in Ohio. I don't have the dates in front of me right now, but I believe Johannes/John was born in 1749 in Pennsylvania.

The family in Jo Davies is distantly connected to us... although documenting it can get confusing.

Wow, thanks for the information about our great-grandparents! I just recently had a cousin, whose Mother was a sister to Dad, ask me if I knew our great-grandparents' names. Now I can pass the info on to him.
Her name was Bernice and she married a Wilbur Spencer.
Both have passed away. I live on a farm, that Dad and Mom bought off of his sister Gertrue, a couple of years after her husband passed away from lung cancer, Walter Baker. That was back in the 60s, I graduated from Dawson-Bryant (Coal Grove) in 1970.

By the way, have any of your relatives, male in particular, passed away from lung cancer? Grandma's brother did,
besides Dad, and at least 3 of my male cousins on the Deeds side of the family.

Oh and just an afterthought, Patty. Did you go to Marshall U anytime in the 70s? I did, and graduated from there a degree in Educational Media. The main reason I asked is that at one time I recieved an tutition bill with my address here in Ohio with the name of Patty Deeds! Right address but wrong name and not my bill! Ha! That's Marshall for you.

Thanks, again
Rita

I have a large original wedding license that was in an antigue frame, it has a picture of the bride and groom as well as the minister. Tthe wedding took place Dec 12, 1898 in Barlow, Michigan between Deeds and Whipple, it is handwritten, the document is not in good condition, has been torn, folder and taped, apparently this frame was not the original frame. . If this is your family, I would love for you to have this as I know how precious those pictures and license, etc are. If you believe this is your ancestor contact me with the first names of the bride and groom to confirm that you are indeed the future owner of this. I want the rightful heirs to have this momento of their granndparents or great grandparents.

Rita,
Yes Hinton is in Summers County. Your grandfather William Howard Deeds was the son of Silas Allen Deeds and Louisa Lilly. Silas was the brother of my great grandfather Joseph Robert Deeds (who married Mary Elizabeth Meador). Silas and Joseph's brother Jonas Armentrout Deeds married Mary Elizabeth Meador's sister Rachel Celia Meador. Rachel and Mary were the daughters of William Tolliver Meador and Virginia Ann Gwinn.

Silas, Jonas and Joseph along with John Milton III, George, Sarah Elizabeth,Rufina Maria and Martha F. were the children of John Milton Deeds II and Martha "Patsy" Armentrout.

John and Martha, Jonas and Rachel and some of their children, and my great grandparent Joseph and Mary Deeds are all buried in Jumping Branch, Summers County WV. My grandfather Charley Christopher Deeds is also buried in the same cemetery. There is an old building Deeds Hall not far from the cemetery that was used as a meeting place for the congregation when the Bluestone Baptist Church burned in 1913. Deeds Hall is located across the road from the current Bluestone Baptist Church. The original church was established by Josiah Meador in 1798 (in his home on the Little Bluestone River) but was moved to Jumping Branch when most of the congregation came from that area.

There is a stained glass window with a dedication to "John M. Deeds faithful servant for 60 years" in the Bellepoint Baptist Church in Summers Co. I don't know which John that is for sure. John Milton II who was married to Martha was the son of John Deeds and Barbara Armentrout so there were several Johns in the family. I'm not sure about the Wilson connection but there is definitely a Meador connection. Your father Emil Franklin would have been my 2nd cousin once removed.

Patty

Josephine Higgs is the daughter of Dorilas. She is listed as such in the 1900 Census and he is listed as Widowed. His wife was Margaret ??? who was alive in the 1880 Census so she must have died sometime between 1880 - 1900. I would assume she was Izola's mother.

I think you have posted to the wrong message board. This is for information about Deeds family members. You probably want to put this on the Lee message board and Frashure message board. The name Deeds frequently causes confusion, especially when doing a search for the name of one of my ancestors and gettin dozens of responses for "deeds" to property.

There is some ongoing confusion between the Sullivan County, MO Deeds and the Jo Daviess County, IL Deeds. This is no doubt due in part to the fact that there are cemeteries in both counties bearing the Deeds surname. My line is buried for the most part in the Jo Daviess County Deeds Cemetery. There is a John Deeds buried there in my line, but he was born in Illinois in 1815. Two of his older brothers, however, were born in the state of Kentucky - Philip Deeds and Thomas Deeds. All of these men are sons of my g-g-grandfather, Jacob Deeds b. 1793 in Maryland, d. 1856 in Jo Daviess County, IL.

My Deeds family line goes back to 1793 in Maryland and does not include a George Deeds. My great grandmother was from Canada but her maiden name was Vipond. She married my great grandfather, Joseph Deeds in Illinois.

There is some confusion between the Deeds Cemetery in Sullivan, Missouri and the Deeds Cemetery in Jo Daviess County, Ilinois named for my great great grandfather Jacob Deeds. He and two of his four sons as well as their wives and children are all buried there. I am assuming that you visited the Sullivan, Missouri cemetery. To my knowledge I have no direct line Deeds ancestors buried there. If you ARE referring to the cemetery in Illinois, then we should share since I have a number of photos of headstones that were taken there.

My direct Deeds line descends from Jacob Deeds b. 26 Feb 1793 in Maryland, d. 2 Jan 1856 in Jo Daviess County, Illinois. He married Sina Wyatt 22 Jul 1809 in Carter County, Tennessee. Sina was born ca. 1794 in Tennessee - the date and place of her death is unknown. They had four sons and five daughters born in both Kentucky and Illinois. None of their children married anyone with surnames matching your inquiry. To my knowledge, there are no Irvin or Omus Deeds connected with my ancestry. I have not been able to trace my line overseas, but I strongly suspect a German 'Dietz' came to this country and anglicized the name to Deeds. It is also possible that my line descends from Irish roots. I still have lots of research to do. Good luck with yours.

Still looking for family of Stephen Deeds (Duds) of Westfield NJ

I was contacted a long time ago and someone mentioned that this Stephen could be the son of George Deeds and Phebe Ball. From 1811-1840 I find Stephen Deeds in Westfield NJ, but I have no other info on him. I think he would be born near 1780 and died sometime after 1840. I think that he has a daughter named Mary b 1809 and died 1900 who is also listed as "Mary Duds". She married Andrew Cadmus. I would appreciate any info on Stephen Deeds of George Deeds and Phebe Ball. Thanks!

Re: Deeds from WV (Summers County area)

Is Hinton, WV in Summers County? My father's name was Emil Franklin Deeds, he was named for two Uncles; Emil Wilson and Franklin Deeds. He was born in 1924 in Hinton,WV and died 1995 in Ironton, OH. His parents were William Howard Deeds and Josephine Harvey Deeds. I don't know the year or date when Gram (grandmother) brought her children over to the Ohio side, she already had relatives here. Dad was the youngest. I believe I have heard of an Meadows connection either a Harvey or Deeds married one. I don't know all of Grandpa's brothers names. But two of them were named Franklin and another was John, who was also a Baptist pastor. Don't know about a Joe. Hope this helps us both.

Rita Faye
I am trying to find information on my husband's family. Hid grandfather, Irvin Erwin (Jack) Deeds, was born in Rockingham in Sept 1904 and died in Balto., MD in 1973. He was the son of Omus G. Deeds born 1880 and died 1914 and Mary Izola Higgs born 1882 and died June 1961 in Rockingham. Omus was the son of Joseph Deeds born abt. 1857, died 1895 and Jennetta Sellers.

Mary Izola Higgs was the daughter of Dorillas and Josephine ? Higgs.

The family says they are of indian descent thru the Deeds family but we haven't been able to prove it.

Any information on Deeds and/or Higgs would be greatly appreciated.
