David Deerfield, a staff scientist at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, died at his Squirrel Hill home Sunday.
The 50-year-old, whom his wife, Terrie, called a "sweet curmedgeon" was diagnosed with chondrosarcoma, a rare bone cancer....
Dr. Deerfield, an only child, grew up in Wichita. His mother's family was from Texas & his father's family was from West Virginia. He told friends he was related to the famous dueling clans, the Hatfileds & McCoys. His great-grandfather was involved with the 19th-century cattle drives on the Chisholm Trail....Burial will be in Liberal, Kan. After the formal sevices, Dr. Deerfield's family intends to celebrate his life as he'd wished.

Don't know if you know this or not - Rachel his daughter married Odes Thomison and lived in Osage Co., KS in the 1920 census (ED 112, Sheet #3A) with Nels and her son Odes Jr. Her husband died in the 1918 flu epidemic. Odes Sr. was my grandfather, Clarence's older brother. I corresponded with Rachel for a time before she died, but she really didn't go into the family history at all.

Looking for any info on my grandfather, Nels Deerfield, born in Denmark in 1859. Came to America, married my grandmother Jennie in Wisconsin about 1889. Jennie came from Madison Wisconsin. Don't have a maiden name for her. They moved to Iowa, where my father Bayard and his sister Rachel were born. I believe they may have been born in Exira, Iowa. My grandfather changed his last name to Deerfield, when he arrived in America. It may have been Diremark. Not sure of the spelling.

I'm looking for information on where the Deerfield's in WV come from exactly. My gg-grandmother was Mindy Deerfield, she married John Williams/Williamson and moved to Columbus, Ohio. Any help would be appreciated.
