Ed,

Thanks, I've responded to your PM.

Do you mean Joseph's wife Ann? If you do,

I've found her maiden name on two of her sons' death certificates - John Joseph Graham and George Oscar Graham. I have John's death certificate in my family tree. George's is on the familysearch.com Research Pilot. To find it, navigate to the Alabama Statewide Deaths and search is name. On both certificates, Ann's maiden name is spelled Scarbrough.

Thanks. I actually started when I was 13 about to be 14. I realized that it's important to preserve your family history before it's gone.

Kenneth

Hello,

I am related to you all through my great-great-great-grandfather Joseph Graham. Joseph was born about 1854 (the 1900 census says Nov 1854) in Pulaski County, Georgia to James Graham and Charlotte Butler.

I previously spoke with the Luan Harper that was mentioned in this thread about my Joseph Graham family. I did not know who his wife was, only that her name was Ann E. I've finally figured out this mystery.

Joseph Graham married Ann (or Anna) E. Scarborough about 1877. Luan told me that this was about the time that the Graham family moved to Alabama. I found Joseph and Ann in the 1880 census for Crawfords & Columbia, Henry County, Alabama with their daughter Mattie (who was my gg-grandmother. She married Thomas Kenyon Dixon). I just found Ann's parents Adiel C. Scarborough and Martha Ann Hobbs in the 1880 census also living in Crawfords & Columbia, Henry County, Alabama. (Ann and her parents were living in Pulaski County, GA in 1870).

Now, I don't know if Joseph & Ann were married in Georgia or Alabama. I'm leaning toward Georgia as Ann's parents came to Alabama when the Graham family did.

Unfortunately I am only 15 so I have not had the time and cannot travel to get newspaper clippings, court documents, etc. on my family. If anyone can give me more information on my Graham family it will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kenneth Dixon

This is what I have.

Descendants of Angus Dees

Generation No. 1

1. Angus10 Dees (Joel9, Joel8, Richard7, William6, Emanuel5, Andrew John4 Deas, Thomas3, Andro2, ?1) was born Mar 1836 in Chesterfield County, S.C., and died 1904 in Chesterfield County, S.C.. He married (1) Eliza E. Ray 1864, daughter of ? Ray and Elizabeth Mitchell. She was born 1837. He married (2) Emeline Pope 27 Jun 1897 in Union Co., NC, daughter of Wylie Pope and Eunice Williams. She was born Nov 1847 in Union Co., NC, and died 01 Mar 1931 in Marshville, Union Co., NC.

Notes for Angus Dees:
Angus and three other soldiers were captured by the Union Forces. During the capture, a Union soldier was killed. Out for revenge, the Union soldiers decided that one of the four Confederate soldiers should die and they picked my Great-Great Uncle Angus Dees. The youngest of the Confederate soldiers stepped foward and volunteered to die in Angus's place saying that more than likely Angus had family back home and he, the young soldier had no one. The Union soldiers killed the young Confederate soldier and Angus went on to live into the 1900's.

Was at the surrender of General Lee at Appomattox to Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant on Palm Sunday, April 9, 1865.

On April 3, 1865, the Confederate Captitol was captured and six days later the Army of Northern Virginia was finally brought to bay near the small rural county seat of Appomattox Court House. The army had been reduced to half its former strength and to avoid useless effusion of blood General Robert E. Lee had agreed to meet with the Federal Commander regarding the terms of its surrender.
On Palm Sunday, April 9, 1865, the two commanders met in the parlor of the Wilmer McLean House and while there during the one and a half hour proceeding, terms of surrender were drafted by Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant. The terms drafted for surrender of the Army of the Northern Virginia were based on the Hill-Dix Cartel for a general exchange of prisoners of war dated July 22, 1862.
General Grant issued orders allowing paroled Confederate Soldiers to pass through the Union Lines and travel on Government transports and military railroads. Copies of these orders were then distributed to the Confederate Field Commands.

SPECIAL ORDERS, HDQRS, ARMY OF NORTHERN, VIRGINIA - april 10, 1865

All officers and men of the Confederate service paroled at Appomattox Court House who to reach their homes are compelled to pass through the lines of the Union Armies, will be allowed to do so, and to pass free on all Government transports and military railroads.
By command of Lieutenant-General Grant:

E. S. PARKER,
Lietenant-Colonel and Assistant Adjutant-General

A early unit muster role is available. Also the Appomattox Muster Role, and brief descriptions of many of the members.

8 April 1861 Hugh Richardson Garden joins Sumter Volunteers (Company D, 2d SCV) and is made colour sergeant.
16 July 1861 Garden and several other future PLA members fought at 1st Manassas under Kershaw.
Spring 1862 Garden returns to Sumter and begins recruiting men for an artillery company. He invested heavily of his own funds, and within a few months he had enlisted nearly 150 men.
27 April 1862 Members of the PLA embark for Camp Hampton to begin training.
July 1862 PLA had been accepted by Gen. Wade Hampton, but he was transferred to a Cavalry command. The Hampton legion was now commanded by John Bell Hood. PLA was now under Major B.W. Frobel.
28 July 1862 PLA has first action on Manassas Plain. Engaged at about 3:00 PM as a preliminary to Longstreet's devastating attack on Pope's lef
17 September PLA is engaged at Sharpsburg. Starting just after noon, they fired on the advancing Federal line crossing Burnside's Bridge. Together with the Howitzer section of Reilly's Battery and Toomb's Ga infantry they kept the Federals at bay for over five hours, until A.P. Hills division could reach the scene. PLA had nine horses killed, five wounded, eleven men wounded including one Lt. (who died after his leg was amputated), and two guns disabled (but not captured). (Read a poem written by Lt. McQueen for the departed Lt. Pringle)
September 1862 PLA moves into camp near Culpepper, Va.
23 November 1862 PLA moves camp to Fredricksburg.
11 December In reserve at Fredricksburg and not engaged.
February 1863 PLA left Rappahanock and moved south with their division
March 1863 PLA moves along Blackwater River in Virginia
11 April 1863 moved with Longstreet's force around Suffolk, Va.
2 May 1863 PLA receives orders to leave Suffolk
3 May 1863 Lt. George Coit killed by unexploded shell.
May 1863 PLA marches through Petersburg, Richmond, Louisa Courthouse, Orange, and Culpepper to rejoin the Army of Northern Virginia on the Rappahannock.
15-19 June 1863 the PLA marches from Culpepper to Little Washington, then to Markam Station, to Upperville, and finally to Snicker's Gap. Total distance of nearly 70 miles in three days, crossing the Shenandoah River three times. These were also some of the hottest days of the year.
20-27 June 1863 Battery marches to Chambersburg, PA covering a total of 175 miles in twelve days since leaving Culpepper, Va.
30 June 1863 PLA moved 8 miles to Fayetteville
1 July 1863 Palmetto Battery marches to Cashtown.
2 July 1863 Deployed along Emmitsburg Pike, PLA was part of artillery support as Hood attempted to turn the Union left. From 3:45 until dark Henry's Battalion shelled Union positions such as Devil's Den.
3 July 1863 The PLA, seperated from Henry's Battalion, join a line of 138 guns in support of what was to become known as Pickett's Charge. Before the day was over Lt. McQueen would take his gun forward in support of Pickett's charge, actually outdistancing the infantry at one point. McQueen's gun (a 12 pdr. field howitzer) and four guns from the Washington Arty. were the only pieces to move forward at this time. The gun was disabled and Capt. Garden personally led the team which withdrew the gun. View a list of the gun crew who went forward.
August 1863 PLA moves back to Culpepper.
November 1863 Battery moves to Mine Run, Va.
Read a poem written by Lt. McQueen while in winter camp.
8 May 1864 PLA in action at The Blockhouse against troops from the Wilderness.
12 May 1864 PLA stands ready at Spotsylvania
1 June 1864 Engaged at Cold Harbour
30 July 1864 PLA partipates in the battle of the Crater, using mortars to throw shells at the Union troops who tried to come out of the crater. Read a description of the action.
7 October 1864 Action on Darbytown road in defense of Richmond.
March 1865 Richmond line at Drewry's Bluff.
7 April 1865 Their last engagement of the war near Farmville, Va.
8 April 1865 PLA given permission to abandon remaining guns, but kept horses in case conditions should improve.
9 April 1865 Lee surrenders at Appomatox Court House and Capt Garden makes his final Roll. The men begin the long trip home.
9 April 1865 While home on furlough, Lt. McQueen led a group a group of locals in defense of Sumter. The marauding Yankees met his force of old men and boys at Dingle's Mill where McQueen had an obsolete howitzer. Lt. McQueen lost his life in this engagement. He was the last member of the PLA, since the rest had surrendendered just hours earlier.

More About Angus Dees:
Burial: Zoan Church Cemetery, Chesterfield County, S.C.
Military service: Private in Garden's Company C Palmetto Light Artillery of South Carolina

More About Emeline Pope:
Census: 1930, Emeline was living in brother Alexander Pope's resident

Children of Angus Dees and Eliza Ray are:
2	i.

I'm tracing my Deese lineage to Angus Dees (b.1836) and I believe his father was Joel Dees who is the son of Joel Dees. This is how I believe the family line follows:
Emanual>William>Richard>Joel>Joel>Angus>Lewis>Bartley Obrien>Bartley Melvin>David (that's me).

However, I am not positive about Richard and the names before him. A family historian provided notes several years ago and the notes were initially a verbal history related to another family member.

I assume we are connected at some point, which probably is Emanual Dees.

Did Newit-9 have a brother named Joel(son of Joel-8) and nephews named Augus or McNeil (McNeel)?

Initially, I gathered family notes that were hand written over fifty years ago and passed to me. On the notes, I have Joel, Joel, Angus, Lewis and Bartley Obrien Deese. The first Joel may have used a different variation of the spelling of the name as he may have used Deas or Dees. I beleive Angus or Lewis maybe have changed the spellig of the family name for their branch of the family.

Thankks for any assistance.

David Lewis Deese
dldeese@hotmail.com

Henry,
Unfortunately it is difficult enough to trace family activity as they move from state to state before 1850. However, if they were involved in criminal activity, they did not want to be found and it can get to be difficult at best.

Perhaps the best clue so far is the Elizabeth Graham in the home of GG Graham (Green G Graham)which could well be our Elizabeth and her brother.
Best,
Ed

"Oh, almost forgot, in criminal activity, when an alias is taken, 99% of the time the name has a connection. This is why I believe that Graham was the maiden name of Elizabeth, Daniel Dees/Graham's mother. Daniel took the name Graham and he was obviously known as Graham in the community where he grew up and lived, otherwise he would not have had Graham children, marriage license, etc., etc. So there had to be a real connection to the Graham name. Dees may be as you note, but there is the marrage license for William Barefoot and Elizabeth Dees which connects our Daniel to William and Elizabeth considering that William is documented to be Daniel's step father. I do not know where the Rodgers comes in as of this time and the Barefoot I think is obvious."

Agreed. That is a mystery. Just what was Elizbeths maiden name?
What did she do between the death of Dees and the marriage to Barefoot? That is, if she really was the Elizabeth married to Dees. Did she marry a Graham? Or was Graham her maiden name?

Rogers or Rodgers is quite common in the area of Dodge, Bleckley and Pulaski.

Got your report, ED and Now I tend to believe that Richard Daniel Graham was PA's uncle Dan. As Lu ann says, she could not find out what became Of Richard Daniel nor Sammy. I now believe that Daniel did not go with the rest of the family, but either went later or went ahead. I believe now that he was alrady there and in contact with KIN able to help the Family settle.

Alabama census records or Colorado could turn him up. Also the Courthouse records of Henry and surrounding Counties.

I knew a Graham in the army, late forties, who was a near double for My Brother BOB. He told me that one of his Grandpas had come from Alabama. Not conclusive, I know.

I did forget to mention...George Wallace, late Governor of Al..his Mother was a Graham from Clio Al. My sister Ruth, married to a Williams, discovered a connection to the Country Singer, Hank Williams, also. Cannot remember the exact details.

Anyway, there is a lot of stuff I don't know about the Alabama Grahams, and "Uncle Dan" may have been from the family of the Graham that Elizabeth was married to before she married the Barefoot.

My Father was James Ira Graham. Born in 1878. Married Eva Rentz B 1887.

Pa was born while the John jr family was in Alabama. Birth cert shows Columbia Al but more likely nearer to Abbeville
Al. or Clio, al. Like as in Georgia, counties were made from other counties, but Pa said he was born in Henry County. Thanks to my Nephew Edward Graham, I have a plat map of the Farm they owned/lived on in Al. Edward has been compiling information for some years on the descendants of my Father, who are many, and the Saga of my Grandfather John Jr. John Jr is buried in the Denton, Ga. cemetary. Died in 1914 which leads me to believe that he was an early victim of the Great Flu epidemic which went worldwide in 1918. He had two Daughters that died pretty close to that same year.

I do not have much information on the Rentz family outside of my Grandfather, Levi Rentz, who was a Civil War veteran.
I know all of the more immediate cousins, of course.

I am not experienced in chasing ancestors by name, as you observed one error. I have a cousin, LUAN Harper, who has quite a lot of stuff, and my nephew Edward who has made it a real work of art.

I have been to Scotland a lot, and know the history of the Grahams there, especially the more famous ones. If you are interested you can find a bunch of that by Googling Clan Graham. I am a member of the Clan Graham society. When you Google, be sure to put the word CLAN before the name.

The DEEs come from Scotland also, BTW. Also like our ancestors, from Ireland and Germany/Holland. Which fits into my own scenario that they could have been Grahams before 1603. King James I did the Grahams wrong, but the rest of the world a big favor!! Grahams everywhere!!

I especially thank you for the names of the rest of Daniels Children. I can maybe use that to find out more about the Grahams in Dodge County that are our cousins, when next I see Johnny or Donald.

More later? You bet!!

Cousin Henry

Cousin Henry,
Unless I misunderstand, you are saying that besides the following children:

James
Joseph M.
Sarah Elizabeth
John Allen "Jack"
Shardrack W. "Shade"
George W.

Daniel Dees, Graham & Martha Daniels had another son named Daniel, whom John Jr. identified as his Uncle Daniel. Uncle Daniel lived in Alabama and moved to Colorado. Am I correct in my understanding and is this correct? Do you have any further information on Uncle Daniel, DOB, DOD, wife, etc.?

Why did you identify Martha, Daniel's wife, as Martha Woods? In my records I have har as a Daniels, a marriage liscense for Daniel Graham and Martha Daniels dated 12/18/1822 and all kinds of papers on Martha, Daniel's wife. Was Martha married before or .....? I am very interested in your memory of this.

I guess the Grahams required some extra fire and brimstone in their preaching. :-) My grandmother and grandfather were First Church of God. I guess they figured the Hardshell Baptists were not quite stout enough to keep the devil from their back door.

I have in my file 10 children for John Jr and Margrette Ann Elizabeth Hartley. Which son was your father and what is the data on your mother, so that I may add you to my file?

I am 63, so we are one generation apart, your great would be my 2 great.

I am going to send you a Geneology report on Daniel Dees II, our Daniel's probable father, I am interested in the sons who show up in Pulaski County, GA and your memory of the other Graham family folks in the area and their possable connection, especially if your folks ever refered to any of them as "cousin."
Best,
Cousin Ed

Oh, almost forgot, in criminal activity, when an alias is taken, 99% of the time the name has a connection.
Since Daniel Dees Graham married Patsy Daniels, and the colored man that my Grandfather killed was also known as Daniels, I wonder if he had been a slave of the Daniels family that Daniel Dees Graham married into.

The civil war that freed the slaves happened not many years before then.

No justification of course, for the slaying, but the Man killed did give them some sass, which may have, along with the shine they had been drinking, set off their anger.

Not really relevant, but a little fill in that could add to the story.

Hello Cousin Henry,
Your grandfather was John Graham Jr. The namesake of my great grandfather John Allen "Jack" Graham. As was the old custom, James named his first son after his brother and gave him a Junior as an honorarium to his brother.

James and his son John Jr were arrested and then escaped from jail after the shooting you refer to. They then did the rest as you relate. It was James who told his son to shoot the man and John Jr did exactly as his father instructed and shot the man dead. I have the newspaper account of the shooting.

James and brother Jack were a double handful. Besides the James / John Jr shooting, Jack a CSA veteran was tried for the killing of David Lee and was acquitted. The family always said he was in fact guilty.

Then there was another shooting and cutting the two were involved in where a David Buchan got himself dead. Seems as how the deputy that arrested Jack in the Lee killing did not want to die at that time and shot Buchan by mistake. At the time James was trying to kill the deputy at a walk board creek crossing. Buchan was trying to stop the killing and got between James and the deputy and as happens with folks that get between, sometimes they get hurt the worst.

When Martha, James and Jack's mother, was to loose the farm to an auction due to a court award for the damage claim by the stolen slave's (Daniel’s stolen slave) owner, James and Jack were standing in the auction crowd with pistols in their belts. That is why Martha was the one and only bidder at $3.50 for 350 acre farm, lock, stock and barrel. No one, not one soul, wanted to cross the two brothers. I have the sheriff’s sale documents.

Daniel, according to court documents, prison records and newspaper accounts went by several names; Dees, Deas, Barefoot, Rodgers, and Graham. I have copies of old court documents recording trials for petty theft which lists one alias after another, with his Graham name. Also, Daniel married Martha under Graham and his marrage papers state Daniel Graham. But... his mother, Elizabeth Dees married William "Billy" Barefoot and Billy Barefoot was his stepfather, whom Daniel killed, by documentation. Daniel was much older than the marriage.

There are a couple of Elizabeth women married to Daniel Dees men that would fit the dates. But one, had other sons with names that are also found in the Pulaski, GA area, at the same time, by document. The Dees line goes back to Colonial America.

Best,
Ed
Well there you are, a way to help solve the mystery, you Graham guys. If you do the test and have an exact match to this guy, then you have a match to Emanuel Dees and proof you are a Dees/Graham and that Daniel Dees Graham was a descendent of Emanuel, in our little drama.

I am not a male direct line descendent so my Y DNA will not match. I am a descendent by multiple females. Daniel's son John Allen Jack Graham his daughter Martha Graham to her daughter Mammie Davis to her daughter Joyce E Jones, to me.

But, I am a 67 point Y DNA participant in the Harmon/Harman program.
Ed

PS the real problem is the number of Dees men named Daniel about the same time and they all could not think of a name so named their sons Daniel. Several married an Elizabeth. So when you think you have proof, it is a yes but, situation. And no one knows for sure "who shot John."

Thanks for the reply about the headstone. I am the historian for the Graham County Historical Society. I took the photo last week when I was at the N O Bar and Circles. We are planning to do historical tours of the ranch starting in October. We will be working with Wilma and Doug Jenkins, the current owners of the Circles. I am in the process of obtaining as much infomration as possible about the local ranches, Apaches, outlaws, and common folk who populated the area. Your information about the headstone will help because we will be cleaning up the old graveyard and taking people there on a regular basis. The Old Timers hard work and deeds should not be forgotten. I am also working on correcting some errors in Edie Fitch's book, The Heart and Hub of Eagle Creek. If you notice any, please let me know.
Thanks,
Hal

Scott,

In my file I have a note, sent by another researcher, that David Paradise DEES is enumerated in Franklin Co., Illinois in the 1850 Census. I do not have the enumeration for David in 1850 transcribed, and a quick search at Ancestry of the Census Index does not reveal a DEES in Franklin County in 1850. It is possible though, that he was enumerated, and was struck off the Census as he was not living in Franklin County at the official date - or that he is just missed in the Index. A visual scan of all the Franklin Co., Illinois 1850 Census pages might resolve this issue.

David Paradise was a son of Jesse P and his 1st wife. I am down from Jesse P and his second wife, Sarah.

Noah Posey Dees, Sr. B.1/6/1841 D. 4/6/1900 in Eagle Creek, Greenlee Co, AZ was my Great-Great-Grandfather! His daughter, Theodosia "Dora" Dees M. John "Jack" Ransom (my Great-Grandparents). Thank you very much for posting the photo of his stone marker. As a little history, my cousin Tom Dees made this marker on a piece of flat granite in 1977. he carved Noah's name and dates with a hammer and chisel. The original maker was wooden and decayed. Noah was buried in the Double Circle Ranch Cemetery on Eagle Creek about 25 miles North of Clifton, AZ. Are you related? I am very interested to know how you found his grave site. Many thanks!

David Paradise Dees & Nancy Black

Hello, Wondering if anyone has located David Paradise Dees specifically in the 1850 census? He married Nancy Black in Jefferson Co., IL 1841. Is an administrator to George Black estate in 1846 Jefferson Co. I do not pick him up again until 1860 in Perry Co., IL. Then the family removes to Franklin Co where they live out the remainder of their lives. Need to find this family in 1850 and have not been able to locate them. Appreciate your help.
Scott Black

Thank you for the information. I will have to go page by page through the 1850 Franklin Co. I am researching the family of Nancy Black who married David Paradise Dees in 1841. David P. Dees is the administrator for estate of George Black in 1846 Jefferson Co.,IL. I find David and Nancy Dees in Perry Co., IL in 1860. Enumerated with them are one Janie Black b. 1837 IL and one Daniel Black b. 1858 IL. Hoping finding them on 1850 census may provide some more clues on the Black side.
While I know Nancy and David P. Black lived past 1900 I have been unable to find them on the census there as well. Will keep looking. Thanks for your help,
Scott Black

Dear Cousin Ed

Me being 83 years old, and remembering things my Father told me about his family, There are sons of Daniel Dees Graham not before mentioned. His son. my great gandfather, James
Graham B 1828, married Charlotte Butler in Pulaski County.

He had a Brother, Daniel Graham, who lived in Henry County Alabama but who later migrated to Colorada. But when My Granfather John jr and my great grandfather went off to Alabama, Daniel was already there. My father, who was born there, talked about his "UNCLE DAN" and remarked that he was rather mean.

There may be other Brothers besides my great grandfather
and Daniel.

I know one Family of Grahams who have lived in Dodge and Bleckley county for more than one generation and whose Father, I do not now remember his name, was a Hardshell
Preacher and Farmer. I do know that he married a Peacock, and he visited my Father more than once where they discussed religin and called each other "Cousin". He had a farm near Chauncy Ga. Hardshell preachers back then travelled around a lot. They held church only once a month, and few of them were pastors of their own church.

The Hardshell connection is a strong indicaion that they were indeed cousins. My Father was a hardshell.

It is likely that he was also a descendant of Daniel Dees Graham through yet another Brother of which I have seen no mention here. I will know more when I see his sons and find out what they know.

The remaining sons are Johnny Graham and Donald Graham who live out a ways west from Chauncy. I knew two others, Joe and a hardshell preacher whose name escapes me now. They died a few years back. Don used to work for me when I was a supervisor at Robins AFB, Ga.

More yet, they had a cousin named Emory Graham who died in 1991, and whose Father or Grandfather could also be yet another descendant of Daniel through yet another unmentioned son.

So the waters are still muddied a bit. We need to know just how many children that Daniel Dees Graham and Elizabet Wood had. Also their names and dates of Birth.

BTW, King James I took the throne in 1603 and rousted the Grahams from the Borders shortly thereafter. So my scenario could still be accurate about the DEEs being an assumed name of Grahams living on or near the River Dee in the early 1600s. The River Dee definitely ran through what was then Graham country.

Also BTW, this is the same Hing James that had the King James version of the Bible written because he and the Pope did not get along.

Highest regards, Cousin Henry. Email me sometime at Henry8726@yahoo,com.

The river DEE is in the heart of the Graham country in Scotland on the border between England and Scotland. The Grahams were one family involved in "Reivering" along with other families. (Armstrong, Douglas, Elliot, etc.)

King James I of England was also King of Scotland. He was the first of the Royal Stuarts (Stewart) dynasty of England.

He was determined to pacify the Border and determined that the Grahams were the worst of the lot, so he hanged some and took the lands of the rest, packing them off to other countries, Ireland, Holland and America.

But a lot of them changed their names..Maharg, Netherby, etc, probably also to Dee, Dea, or the like after the river Dee.

So is this the origin of the DEEs family? Are they all "really" Grahams? I believe that it is highly possible.

If Daniel was a Dees where would he find the justification for the Alias Graham? Was Elizabeth Wood married to a Graham, or the lover of one before she married Billy Barefoot? Were the Dees of that time still aware of their Scottish Origins?

Our saga begins with Daniel, before that (1801 or 1802), there was a lot of History involving the Grahams in America. A prominent Scottish family, highly respected there for centuries. Not always so in America. Daniel was not the first Graham to be hanged, BTW.

As a Graham, I have paraded in Scotland with the Chief of the Grahams. (The Duke of Montrose) I wore the Graham Tartan colors (one of them) on my Kilt, and attended many a Scottish gathering here in the southern US while wearing the Scottish regalia.

Now I hear that I am really a DEE? Not a disgrace, but since my Pa and his Pa and his Pa went by the name of Graham, I am content to stay a Graham.LOL?

King James I of England stole the Graham lands on the border and gave them to some Duke another and sent the Grahams packing off to Ireland, Holland and America. A lot of them changed their names to Maharg, Graham spelled backwards and to other names such as Netherby, etc. based on place names and such geographical features as rivers
ETC. There is a River DEE in Scotland, I do believe.

So could it be that all the DEEs are Really Grahams?

The James Graham that married Charlotte Butler is said to be the Father of my Grandfather JOHN Graham, born 1852 and died 1914. But there is no mention of John in the geneology that I just read that lists the murdering Daniel, hanged in SC in 1844 as the root of we Grahams in Georgia.

Pulaski county Georgia is the common connection and where My Grandpa did a bit of shooting on his own, aided and abetted by his own Father James. After which they ran off to Alabama to escape the carpetbagger law. The Sheriff gave them some running room and slap forgot where their farm was, (I do believe they shot some rounds at the moon as my ancestors ran off).

Consequently, my Father was born in Henry County Alabama and the family stayed there for some fourteen or fifteen years. Came back to Coffee County Georgia, where my Grandpa was postmaster and store keeper in Denton, Ga.

It seems that there are also Dees in Henry County. Coincidence?

The Denice who posts here is married to my nephew.

I now have a name for Esther Unknown wife of Berry N. Dees.
Her name is Esther STOUGH b. 12/25/1814 Cabarrus Co NX d. about 1916 in Montgomery Co, AL. Here parents were George STOUGH & Barbara GOODMAN.

The STOUGH's and the DEES were both around the Cabarrus Co, NC area and then they moved to the Upsom Co, GA area, and then on to Tuscalossa Co, AL/Montgomery Co, AL and then to the Navarro Co, TX area. They've left a pretty good trail as for as I can tell.

I have Esther's exact death date on my other computer and the cemetery she is buried in around Montgomery Co, AL.

I was just prodding away on the internet when I came across this STOUGH family, and go into a discussion with them on this. She was the only girl with 7 brothers. They knew she had married a John, but we all know how many people were named John back then. They also know she and her husband moved with the STOUGH families when they moved westward.

Judia b. 1824 IL is in the 1880 census of Monroe, Pope Co. IL with her son George b. 1857 IL and daughter Julia b. 1859 IL with the last name of WAGONER. There's a William WAGONER next door b. in 1850 IL, which I would also assume is her son with his wife and family listed. There is also an Alex Wagoner b. 1845 IL down the road a few homes also with wife and family. Down from Alex is a Marthan (maybe Martin) Wagoner b. 1842 IL with children and no wife. I do not show a Judia Deas in my data base at all, nor can I find any other Deas/Dees living in that Pope area in 1880.

A gentleman who traces his ancestry back to Emanuel Dees had his Y dna tested a few years ago. He is also a close match to us Brown's aka Hicks, Hicks, and Robb aka Rabb. Who knows what our surname is supposd to be! :) So there is a set of Dees markers (67) to hopefully match up to, if he is a desc. of Emanual Dees and the line down. I have his line, but have not verified it document by document; so, I had not posted it on line in my database in Ancestry.com. I have no doubt his data is correct, but as stated can not personally verify it. The line is posted on Roots Web tho - look under Richard Eugene Dees b 10 Feb 1868, Hazelhurst, Copiah Cunty, Mississippi who married Minnie Williams b 25 July 1878, Delhi, Richland County, Louisiana. There are several Daniels in this line, which one do you connect to?

Looking desperately for anyone with information on the biological father of my grandfather, Clary T. Justice. He was raised by his grandmother. We have uncovered little information about his mother and father, however. His mother's maiden name was Lucille Evelyn Legrande and it was thought that his father may be John S. Deese..but we are not sure..If anybody knows anything please let me know..we are at a halt with finding his parents.

Thanks,

Christine Justice Smith
