Hi Kevin, My maiden name is Deese. My Mother and Father were from Oklahoma. My Father's Mom is on the roles, Beatrice Belle Waters. There is talk that some of my ancestor's walked the trail of tears from North Carolina. His father was not on the roles as far as I know, but he was pure Cherokee. My Mother's Father was also on the roles, His name was George Crosslin. Both my parents and I am registered, Edgar Lou Deese, Mary Marjorie Crosslin Deese, my name was Jann Deese. I would love to read any info you have on the Deese Family.
Thank You
Jann

I see that this post is a few years old. Based on the info that I have:

John Bunyan Locklair was born Jan 15, 1882 to John Alexander Locklair (b. unknown) and Mary J Hall (b. Aug 18, 1849 d. Aug 18, 1918). He is the brother of my great grandfather Baron Walter Locklair.

His grandparents were Abednego and Eliza Locklair. I am researching Eliza's last name.

Abednego Locklair born to William and Charity (Grooms?)Locklear which, according to my info, were listed as Indians on the 1790 Census living in Robeson County. I have not been able to cross reference this info as of yet. They migrated to Marlboro County, SC in the late 1790's. He was in the turpentine business.

According to info, Robert Locklear immigrated from Scotland in the 1600's and married into the Indian tribe. This has not been cross referenced, either.

Who is the Arminta Moser (niece) living with Thomas Belk, Sarah Starnes Belk and Andrew J. Belk and the rest of the family in the 1880 census in Buford Union Co, NC. Kind of funny she is listed as the niece and the rest of this family was born in NC instead of SC in the 1880 Census? In the 1900 Census says both her parents were born in NC.

Arminta Deese married Andrew Judge Belk (1867-1931)in 1895 in Union Co., NC. I have not been able to connect her to the Deese Family going back to Emanuel Dees(1675-1723).
I am wondering if maybe Arminta Deese might be Armitta Deese daughter of William E. Deese. Their family moved from Union Co., NC to Blackhawk Co., Mississippi before 1880.
Any help would be appreciated.
Ervin Dees of Chesterfield County,SC had a daughter by the name of Arminta but she was supposed to have been born in 1882.

I am looking for info on the parents of Sarah "Margaret" Deese. Born 3-15-1861 in NC. I have her in 1880 New Salem, Union NC
with Parents Phillip and Jane. I also have her in 1900 and 1910. The only info I have about phillip and Jane is the 1880 census which indicate they are Black. Oral Family history suggests that Phillip was native american, and he married a white woman who was scottish.
Yes, Roger, I did! Thanks so much for all this information! Here's my emai - written out so that the spam-bots don't get it:

kirk dot deese at att dot net

I'm curious as to why you moved Richard under William - I'm guessing you have a listing for John that doesn't list Richard? I think we are definitely talking about the same line of people - this at leat matches what my aunt passed along to me for the most part:

Original ancestor - Manniwell Deas - emigrated from Scotland 1665, documented landing at Old Sommerset, Eastern Shore of Maryland, received an 50 acre land grant with a Richard Partridge.
Sons:
Emanuel, William, John (aunts notes indicate that tey moved to Burtie County N.C. and then on to Chesterfield County S.C. before the revolutionary war.

John Dees b. 1705 - 1710 - not sure d. after 1755 - married to Mary - Sons:
Jacob, John, Harmon, Simon, Richard

Richard Dees - b. 1730 or 39 (references abandoned cemetary book - Stanley Co. Library) d. Dec. 29, 1818 - wife- unknown, Sons:
Bryant, Joel, Daniel, Zach, Christopher, Assa, Charles

Charles Dees - b. 1785 d. after 1850 Wife Esther - sons:
Bryant, Allen

Allen Deese - b. April 10, 1810, d. May 20 1887 (from tombstone) Married to Catherine Upchurch.

One of his sons, James A. is my link to this line. Again, I reiterate, I haven't done the legwork on all of this bt I'm trying to piece together enough information so that I know where to start to build solid dicumentation. I would love to be able to trace the lineage back to Scotland and go as far back as records will let me. I would be greatful for any information that you care to share wiht me I am more than happy to share any information that I run across. Unfortunately at the moment, I don't have that much! Much of it pertains to my great grandfather - Martin Franklin Deese. I do, have a photocopy of Allen Deese's will and a photocopy of the survey platt of his farm in N.C.

thanks again for sharing all this information. I now need to gather it all up and figure out where to start looking! I'm particularly curious about the possible link between Manniwell Deas and Emanuel Dees.

What I'm working with is my aunts notes that she gathered 23 years ago, so bear with me a moment! In her notes, she has Allen listed as a son to Charles who moved to Stanley County, N.C. in 1810. As reference she lists:

South Carolina 1810 census, Cheraw District - pg. 292 - listed with Richard
North Carolina 1830 census, Montgomery County - pg. 79 - Married to Esther with 2 sons - Bryant and Allen.

I might have mentioned beforethat I have not yet looked into these documents, but I'm trying to piece together everything so I can begin the searc for as much solid documentation as I can find.

I would be grateful for any and all information you can share. I don't have that much but would be happy to share any of it. My emai address (written out so that the spam-bots don't get it) is:

kirk dot deese at att dot net

Hey, It's starting to come together!

Mary (Elizabeth Smith) Deese is definitely Martin's mother (source: Martins marriage license and death certificate). I haven't seen the 1870 census but that would make perfect sense seeing as how Martin's father - James A. Deese died in the hospital at Petersburg, Va, Oct. 1862. Martin would have been 4 then and at the time of the 1870 census, a twelve year old. So I'm guessing he and his Mother must have moved in with James A.'s parents - Allen and Catherine.

Also my aunt's notes say that James A. Deese married Mary Elizabeth Smith Oct. 23, 1856. She also has notations from Stanley Co. estate records that James' estate was sold Jan 2, 1863 and that Mary's estate was sold Dec. 6, 1865. There is a reference to James joining Randall Methodist Church in September 1855 and then moving thier membership to Cedar Grove church in Jan. 1860. Digging a little further, I found some of James' military information. He was a member of Co. I, 52nd Regiment, C.S.A.

Now the quest to connect Allen to Charles Dees (b. 1785, d. after 1850). Accordint to the notes I have, he moved to Stanley co. N.C. with his father Richard Dees about 1810 from, I believe, South Carolina. He then evidently shows up in the 1830 Montgomery Co. Census married to Esther with two sons - Bryant and Allen.

Charles Dees, from the notes that I have was a brother to Joel, which I believe you said was your original link to Emanuel Dees - Joel, son of Richard, who was a son of John Dees, who was a son of Emanuel Dees. My aunts notes only list 3 sons of Emanuel - Emanuel, William and John.

Did you say there were 5 sons? In my aunts notes, she believes that Emanuel Dees originally emigrated to Old Sommerset, Eastern Shore of Maryland. This is from a book from the Stanley County library - "Old Sommerset on The Eastern Shore of Maryland" by Clayton Torrence, Regional Publishing co., Baltimore 1966 (original publlished in Richmond, VA, 1935). Lib. of Congress card Cat. # 66-30004.

this book places a "Manniwell Deas" arriving on the Eastern shore of Maryland in 1665 and receiving a 50 acre land grant with a "Richard Partridge". My aunts notes then say that he moved to Burtie Co. N.C. (from which Johnston county was later formed) and then moved on to Chesterfield Co. S.C. before the Revolutionary war.

So that's the bulk of the info I have. I still need to verify the information past Allen Deese. Once again, any info you can pass along is greatly appreciated!

Hey, Thanks for the update. I need to do some digging in my aunts notes and talk to her and see if I can locate her documentation for what i have. I'll be seeing her this coming weekend at a family reunion. I'm hoping I can convince her to bring the stuff along (in her 80's). I'll see what i can find out and then post what I can get. Thanks again!

One of the pieces of documentaton that I have a copy of is the will of Allen Deese which lists a "James A. Deese" as one of his sons. The will appears to have been dictated (I'm assuming) to a court clerk and is dated 1887. There is also a copy of the 1850 census of Stanley County, N.C. - reprinted by the Stanley County Genealogical Society in 1983, that lists An "Allen Deas" who at the time is listed as being 43 with a son listed as "Jas. A." 16 years old at the time. Spelling errors and deviations aside, I think they are the same Allen and James A. Deese that are in my direct line. My great grandfather is Martin Franklin Deese who listed his father as being James A. Deese who was married to Mary Smith. This is corroborated with a copy of a required state voter registration ( reprinted by the Stanley County Genealogical Society), circa 1902 in which the registrant was required to provide "From whom desended" in their application for voter registration.

One of the things I also need to find out about or finish matching dates and places on is his military record. I know that James A. Deese served in the Confederate army, enlisted in September 1862 - died in hospital at the age of 29 in October 1862 at Petersburg. I have copies of some of the service records.

So, like I said, I've got a bit of legwork to do to recconect everything my aunt dug up years ago to my satisfaction. Sounds like fun!

Zebuleon and Vance Deese are the same--I have attached additional info regarding the Deese line that I am tracking--Any additional info regarding these individuals is appreciated--If Vontreadaway and kirkdeese would like to provide me with their e-mail address--I will provide updates here and info to their e-mail address--appreciate your research

Register Report for Allen Deese Sr.

Generation 1

1.	Allen Deese Sr.-1. He was born on 10 Apr 1810. He died on 20 May 1887 in Stanly County, North Carolina.

Notes for Allen Deese Sr.: General Notes:

SOURCE- -Carol Hopkins- -Burial: Several miles north of Norwood in what is now a field, just off HWY 52. His wife, several children, and some unidentified graves are there.

According to Miss Eunice Deese, Allen either could not count money or let his wife handle the finances. When he worked at the saw mill, he would tell them on payday that he'd take it home and "let Katie count it." In spite of this he did rather well for a country farmer. There is a deed on record in Stanly County for a male slave. Also, supposedly, the family threw their gold in the well when the Yankees came through. After the danger was over they cleaned the well and retrieved their money.

Allen's parents and place of birth are unknown. However, located in a patch of woods about 2 miles north of the small Deese family cemetery, is a grave marked by only a rock on which is scratched "R. Deese 1730-1816." Is this Allen's grandfather? Relative of some kind?

According to research by Benjamin C Holtzclaw, the original "Dees" settler was Emanuel Dees who probably was born about 1675 and died in 1722 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. He apparently had 3 at least sons, Emanuel, John, and William, who all moved to Bertie County, NC and finally to Johnston County, NC. His son John was born about 1705-10, married a Mary, and their names last appear in Johnston County on a deed dated 1755. His(John's) sons were apparently Jacob, John, jr, Harman, Simon, and Richard, all of whom moved to South Carolina, the first three to Sumter and Richard to what became Chesterfield County. Richard was born around 1740 and no longer appears in the Chesterfield census after 1810. From census records, it is conjectured that Richard may have had sons named Bryant, Joel, Daniel, Zach, Charles, Christopher, and Asa since these Deeses appear as heads of household in the area in 1800 and 1810. Could this be our "R Dees"? Could he have moved with his son Charles to North Carolina or come to visit him here (Charles lived briefly in Stanly county before moving west) and died here? And could Alan be a son of Charles who stayed behind when all the others moved west, maybe because he married the daughter of a prominant Stanly County farmer? Or could he have been a cousin or some other kin who moved here with Charles. Supposedly Charles married a Deese woman who has the name Alan in her family line. Could he have been Charles's wife's brother who moved here with them? All of this is conjecture. Somehow Allen got to Stanly by 1830 and died here.

Source- -Abstracts of Stanly County, NC, Will Book II, 1868-1910 PP138-139 Will of Allen Deese, SR

Will Date: January 23, 1886 Probate Date: May 26, 1887
" I Allen Deese Senior...Item 2nd...to my beloved wife Catharine Deese to have and to hold for life all the Beds and furniture of all sorts in my possession at my death, all the Cattle...my hogs 2 mules, 2 prs of gear a 2 Horse wagon, by buggy and harness, all my bees a years provision for herself and stock, my tract of land where I an now living about 160 acres, One Thousand Dollars in gold to be held by my executor and paid to my wife as her nscessities may demand...to my Daughter Mary A. In 1870 his son, Martin, is living with Allen and Katie Deese and when Martin F. applied for a marriage licence in 1878, he listed both of his parents as "deceased."

James A Deese and Mary E. I have every record of when he appears on the muster rolls. The first one is dated Aug. 31, 1862 to Feb. 28, 1863. On Sept. 25, 186_ (date not filled in), At Camp French (wherever that was) he is listed as deserted on August 5, 1863. He says he surrendered voluntarily on Sept 3, 1863 and restored to duty. However the "restored to duty" is marked through and "taken prisoner at Bristow, Oct 14, 1863" is written. I suppose he was captured just a month and 11 days after he came back. I say he should have kept on running. On all later muster rolls he is listed as "absent, a prisoner." The last entry says he appears on a roll of prisoners of war at Point Lookout, Maryland. Date of arrival is given as Oct. 28, 1863 and he was captured at Bristow Station on Oct. 14, 1864. Remarks: died January 19, 1865.

Notes for BENETER C. (NETTIE) RANDAL:

Bogan never returned from the war. Nettie was never officially notified, but a returning soldier said he had seen Bogan and he was "very sick." When she was convinced that he was dead, she married B. F. Whiticar who was several years younger than she was. They had two sons, but if she had been counting on him for support and help in raising her sons, she was mistaken. He was, in the words of a family member, "sorry" and would not work. She left him, which was unusual for that day and time. Her older sons helped her raise her Whiticar sons. Later James farmed the "Whiticar place" which was some where near Cedar Grove Methodist Church. Nettie is buried in that church's cemetery in an unmarked grave.

Beneter C. (Nettie) Randal. She was born Abt. 1834 in Stanly County, North Carolina. She died Bef. 1900 in Stanly County, North Carolina.

William Bogan Deese and Beneter C. (Nettie) Randal. They were married on 17 Dec 1854. They had 3 children.

i.	Rufus Allen Deese. He died on 01 Mar 1928 in Stanly County, North Carolina.

Notes for James Deese: General Notes:

Notes for JAMES DEESE:

James is said to have been very short-tempered and hard to get along with. He built the house that Aunt Eunice and Bertie lived in, sometime around the turn of the century.

Notes for SARAH MELINDA MAULDIN:

Sarah was a short, dark-haired woman. After both her parents died during the Civil War, the husband of her father's sister, Rev. C. C. Foreman, raised her and her brother and sister. She apparently never attended school. In the 1870 census she and her brother and sister are living with the Foreman family. The older children are in school but she is not. In 1880 they have left. She is still with the family and listed as "housekeeper." It is noted that she can neither read nor write.

She inherited her father's land in Tyson township. After she came of age, the land was divided among Noah's 3 children. Mary preferred money, so Sarah and Murphey bought her share and split the land down the middle. Murphey's land borders what is now "Mauldin Road" while Sarah's borders Midway Road. She seems to have been a bit of a hypochondriac. She would often complain about this or that health problem or ache or pain, and James would say, "Oh, you'll out live me by 10 years." She did.

iii.	John Pruett Deese. He was born 1861 in Stanly County, North Carolina.

Generation 3

5.	Zebulon Vance Deese-3 (Allen Deese Jr-2, Allen Deese Sr.-1) [2]. His birth on 24 Dec 1877 (North Carolina)[2]. Residence 1930 (Tyson, Stanly, North Carolina)[2]. His death Apr 1933 (Stanly, North Carolina).

Notes for Zebulon Vance Deese: General Notes:

Obituary- -Z.V. He as born December 24, 1877, and was therefore 55 years and four months old. He was married to Miss Lillie Lee December 8, 1897. To this union, six children were born. They are: Mrs Anna Smith, Mrs Lillie Mae Greene, Mrs Dollena Boyette, Fred, James and Heath Deese, all of whom he leaves to mourn his death. Mrs Tom A. Davis, of Albemarle, is a surviving sister. In his passing this community feels that it has lost a good neighbor and citizen.
The Emanuel Deese I have was born in 1675 in scotland and came to James City County in 1696. He moved across the James River into Isle of Wight County in early 1700s and had five sons. After his death they all moved to NC. When I first started ten years ago, I had Richard as a son of John Robert Dees. Southern Historical Families by Bodie says that William son of Emanuel Dees died prematurely and his brother John took in his children. That is when I changed and put Richard under William. I am out of ink in my printer so I can't update my file. Thankyou both for all the extra info. In one of the other messages, I gave my email address and a link to one of my web sites. Did either of you see it?

UPDATE:

Hey,

I confirm James A. Deese is son of Allen Deese born 1834. Don't know how I missed it. I have moved Martin Franklin to be a son of James A. Deese. 1870 census shows Martin born 1858 and Mary born 1838 living with Allen and Catherine. It doesn't show Martin as a son or grandson. Could Mary be the wife of James and mother of Martin?
