Hey Georgia. I think I found a death certificate for August Schmidt born July 30, 1876 and died in Detroit in 1916. His wife's name is Stella. It fits our timeframe. If you want me to I can scan it and send it to you. Mary Smith.

I have found a marriage record online for Estella and Alexander Schmidt. I wonder of Alexander and August were related. Schmidt and Smith are similar. I would love to know more about Alexander. I have met other DeFore's in Saginaw. I will invite you to view my family tree at Ancesty.com. Please send me your email address. amidd67@att.net

Hi, my husband's grandmother was Estelle "Stella" Defore Smith, Carson, Blight. She was the daughter of Augustus/August and Matilda Lesia Defore/Dufore. She was first married to Augustus "August" Smith in 1898 in Michigan but not a Alexander Schmidt unless he had changed his name but I've not heard that. I don't think the two are the same.
I found a record (#688) of her birth at the Bay County Clerk's office in Bay City, MI. It read as follows:

Date of Birth: October 25, 1876
Name: Estella Deufore
Sex: Female
Birthplace: Williamstown
Parents: Gustuvus Deufore & Matilda Deufore
Residence: West Bay City
Birthplace of parents: Michigan
Occupation of father: Laborer
Date of Record: May 23, 1877

Estelle was married to Unknown Smith, William Carson & William H. Blight. Had two children: Frances Smith b. abt. 1906 & August Smith b. abt. 1912.

That's about all I have on her so far.

Hope this helps!

Were his siblings Andrew Schmidt and Margaretha Schmidt-Pfundt?

According to Alexander's marriage record, his parents were Stephan and Maggie Schmidt. These were the names of Andrew and Margaretha Schmidt-Pfundt's parents also. They died in Bay County, Michigan.

Obviously you posted this awhile ago and have likely have found more information and updated your records, but I thought that I would post this for anyone else who is looking for these people and find this thread. I believe that "King" Hiram Defore was the son of Stephen Defore and James Defore's brother, not his son. My ancestor George Washington Defore was born abt 1820 and was also the son of Stephen Defore.

Stephen Defore and Mary Ann Camden were married on 2 Jan 1801. Russ Bickers (the other poster in this thread) has a copy of this actual marriage record. This would make it impossible for James to be Hiram's father if he were born in wedlock. Census records indicate that James's probable birthdate is between 1802 and 1804 in Kentucky, making him only 8-16 years older than Hiram (depending on which census-based estimated birth year that you use - 1812-1818)

His wife is listed as Sabrina or Sabina (Camden) in the 1850 and 1860 Census records in Franklin township, Owen County, Indiana. August (we call him Gus) is the son of August DeFore III, who lived on Glenwood St. in Saginaw until he died in 1998. We have the DeFore/Dufour family history all the way back to Augustus & Matilda and all their children. We have hit a stop there. I have not been able to find Augustus' parents. I've been working on it daily for several weeks now. Our son August DeFore VI, just had a son last year, and he's named August DeFore VII. So now we are even more hopeful that we will find the parents of Augustus born in 1844. My email is lynn.defore@verizon.net
Hope to hear from you. Lynn DeFore
I am trying to find Anna Defore, widow of Joseph Carl DeFore. Her last known whereabouts was Clatskine, Oregon (1920 Census).
She was living with her grown daughters Stella Bolte and Lola Skully. There was some suggestion that she may have moved to Washington state after 1920. If anyone knows anything about her, please contact me. Thanks.
Dick
hoon0000@home.com

Back in 2000 I posted a query here and received the nicest package from Diane Prout of Bridgeport Michigan, who spent time at a microfiche machine to help me out and surprise me with an article and obituary for Matilda Leasia DeFore.

I've retyped the article on my website:

http://www.askgar.com/genealogy/saginaw.defore.html

Its a very nice article about Matilda's memories, having grown up as a child born in 1844 in a log cabin south of Saginaw.

My descent from her, through the Purdy, Strong and Warner families is on this page:

http://www.askgar.com/genealogy/purdy.lines.html

Hope the article helps someone.

_-_
gary warner
gar@askgar.com
Hi Bette, Just to alert you to a difference in documentation, the marriage you refer to in Garrard Co, Kentucky reads as follows: "Know Men by These Presents that Ms Stephen Defo William Campden do Warrant to pay James Garrard Governor of Kentucky the Sum of Fifty pounds Current money The payt of Which Will Truly to him Paid I send myself my Heirs Jointly Severally firmly by These Presents Sealed Dated the 2nd Day of Jany 1801
The Condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there has a License issued for a Marriage indented between the above bound Stephen Defo Maryan Campden for which a License has issued now should there be no Lawfull Cause to Obstruct sd Marriage then the above Obligation to be void else to remain in full force. Teste Stephen Defo Seal} Wm Campden {Seal}" I have a photocopy of the original document which I would be glad to send to you. Also, other family research shows that John Carpenter was not the father of the Maryann who married Stephen Defore. Also, are you of the Defore line? I have some gorgeous photos of Stephen's son George Washington Defore and of his children. Email me if you are interested at bickers@earthlink.net

Clara DEFORE b.Oct 25,1868, Saginaw, MI

My grandmother was always telling me about her Grandma BERTRAM, whose maiden name she said was
DEFORE, but I was never able to find her. In fact, I had decided my grandmother was wrong, when her
father's SS-5 came back saying his mother's name was "Clara Bertrand". Just today figured it out. The
Saginaw Obituaries online have her as:

Name: BERTRAND, CLARA M. PURDY
Maiden Name: DEFORE
Spouse's Names: Albert (2), Aaron K. (1)

Her first husband was Aaron PURDY (my grandmother was Esther PURDY). Her second husband was
Albert BERTRAND, and her maiden name WAS Defore!

So now I'm trying to find information on a Clara BERTRAND, who, according to her obit, was born Oct 25,
1868 in Saginaw, MI.
