Philip is giving me a hard time. B 1819 d 1868 m Elizabeth Skinner in 1842, Wentworth Cty. Possibly 10 children, 4 born in Beverley Twp., Wentworth Co. He may have been a Blacksmith in Wentworth County. My problem is he does not seem to show up in the 1851 or 1861 census, he died before civil records started, no indication of death location or a cemetery.
I need to find as many details as possible to try and document him to his parents Simon Deforest & Mary Pear who seemed to have been married in Halton County.

yes, I have this info, thanks. I believe that Amos's second wife was Lydia Taylor. I'm not sure if it was possible to divorce then or if people just remarried anyway. Do you have any info on John, Adam, or Peter Deforest? I'm trying to confirm if they are brothers.

DeForest & Bradford Family Connection

Over the past six months, I have been posting weekly installments on a blog at http://firelands.wordpress.com that tells the history of the founding of the town of Norwalk, Ohio by Sally DeForest and her husband Platt Benedict in 1817 during the settlement of the Firelands or “Sufferers’ Land,” a part of the Western Reserve that was given to “Sufferers” burned out of their homes by the British during the Revolution.

I post an episode of this history on my blog every Monday and will continue until November 2009. I have also posted a genealogy of Sally, whose ancestor Isaac De Forest settled in New Amsterdam in 1636 and a genealogy for Fanny Buckingham, the wife of Platt and Sally’s son Jonas, whose grandmother was Vienna Bradford, a descendant of William Bradford, who came to Plymouth, Massachusetts on the Mayflower in 1620 and was the colony’s second governor.

I invite people interested in the history of the DeForest family to visit my blog where I hope they will be entertained and informed by these postings and fill in gaps and correct inaccuracies in my research.

Thank you for your kind attention. I hope you visit my blog and enjoy my story of Sally DeForest and the settling of the “Sufferers’ Land.”

Dave Barton
Genealogy of Isaac de Forest Who Settled in New Amsterdam 1636

I have posted on the Firelands History Blog, http://firelands.wordpress.com, the genealogy of my ancestor, Sally DeForest Benedict, who, with her husband, Platt Benedict, founded the town of Norwalk, Ohio in 1817.
This genealogy traces Sally’s ancestry from Isaac de Forest, who settled in New Amsterdam (now New York City) in 1636, and is an excerpt from the transcription of a handwritten notebook I discovered in my late grandmother’s papers. The family history in this notebook was the work of two women, Agnes Caroline Wickham and her daughter, Harriott Benedict Wickham Barton (my grandmother), who separately researched and made entries in it over a period of seventy years. Agnes Wickham wrote roughly half the entries in the notebook from 1909 to 1915. In 1915, she gave handwritten copies of her work to each of her five children: Eleanor, William, Lucy, David and Harriott. Harriott continued her mother’s work off and on for the next sixty years, adding entries as late as 1977.
To see this genealogy, please visit the Firelands History Blog, http://firelands.wordpress.com, and go to the DeForest Genealogy page. I welcome comments, corrections and critiques of this genealogy. Please visit and compare this history with your own research of DeForest family history.
Seeking information Anna Maria deForest, who married David Betts. This is an attempt to find a 'back-door' to information possibly leading to the birthplace and parents of my Great Grandmother, Phylinda Bristol. She 'imported' the name 'deForest' and applied it to her youngest son, Frank deForest Gaston, whence it propogated through 2 successive generations to me (Audley deForest Gaston). We are hoping to discover the 'source' of the name in Gr. Grandmother's lexicon, and have been driven by desperation to sundry 'shots-in-the-dark' (such as this).
Thank you for any help you can give.

A. D.
There is a DeForest book called "Walloon Family in America" by Mrs. Robert W. De Forest. This tracks Lockwood de Forest and his Forbears 1500-1848 and includes "A Voyage to Guiana being the Journal of Jesse de Forest and his Colonists 1623 - 1625. This is what assisted us in tying our family links. You are welcome to review my family tree listed under "Showers" in the public trees.
The DeForests were a prolific family with many children in each generation. My mom tracked only what was necessary to us. Half of the children in each generation do not have any information on our tree.
I wish you good luck.

He's listed as married at 21 which would be the 1886 date you're looking for. His wife's name is Hannah. Her name could be Phoebe Hannah or Hannah Phoebe and went by Hannah. She was born in Canada. It wouldn't have taken much for him to have crossed Lake Huron. Does your marriage record have Phoebe's maiden name?
I research DeForest also. Mine came by way of upstate NY across to Wisconsin.

I have a great deal of information on Jesse DeForest and the Walloon family in America. I am a direct descendent of Jesse. He is my 9th great grandfather.

My line of DeForest was in Cato, NY by 1845. My ancestor, Niles, married another long family line (Frary out of Deerfield MA) and the family moved through western NY and into Wisconsin.

I'd be happy to share what I have.

Hello,

I've been reading all the postings about DeForest and sadly, I am not familiar with any of the names. My gg grandmother was Maria DeForest and she was married to an Isaac Forster. I believe she was born in 1794 in Sullivan Co.,NY and I know that she died in 1868 and is buried in the Old Methodist Cemetery in Pleasantville, Westchester Co., NY. I have found a number of DeForests who were Rev. War veterans but I've not been able to make a connection! If anyone has any info that might help me, I'd greatly appreciate it!
Jean
How wonderful that you can trace your ancestry back to Jesse DeForest!
I'm trying to find the parents of my ggg grandmother Maria (DEFOREST) Forster, b. 1794 in Woodbourne, Sullivan Co.,NY. She died 1868 and is buried with her husband Isaac Forster,(b.1795,d.1865) in the Old Methodist Cemetery in Pleasantville, Westchester Co., NY. They had five children: Sarah, John, Isaac, James and Theodore.
My father and brother's first name was DeForest, as is my son's middle name, so the name is important in my family. Obviously it was worth passing down through the years -- I would like to know from whom and why?
Any direction or help would be most appreciated!
Thank you!
Jean

From: "Loyalist Trails" UELAC Newsletter 2007-48 Dec. 9, 2007

Abraham DeForest (1767-1842): A Loyalist Haunting
Abraham is one of my 4th great-grandfathers I have not yet fully researched. He is on my “to-do” list along with many other projects. Abraham DeForest can be found in The King’s Royal Regiment of New York, revised edition by Cruikshank & Watt on page 202.
Abraham is shown enlisted 25 April 1783, as a private, in the 1NY, captured and later listed as a private with the 2ndBn & 2KRR, 1783&84. He married Elizabeth Bowman relocated to the Niagara area and later Halton County, Nelson Township.
Here lies a ghostly tale. Abraham is buried in DeForest Pioneer Cemetery in Halton County along with some of his descendants, relatives and friends. My cousin recently found some spooky details on a web site for the “Southern Ontario Paranormal Society”. The society investigated the DeForest Cemetery and found examples of strange occurrences (and ghosts). Several of the Paranormal Society made reports about disturbing feelings, shadow images and malfunction research equipment. They concluded the Deforest Cemetery is legitimately haunted, calling it the “Real Deal”. On 03 Nov. 2007 some of the Society members returned to the Deforest Cemetery and found evidence of possible unexplained rituals where some markers were moved and candles placed in front of them. Detail can be found on http://www.sopsinvestigations.com/
Are my Loyalists ancestors trying to send their descendants a message or are there some hidden skeletons in the ground, so to speak?
......Paul R.
William Paul Deforest m. Rebecca Stephenson (nee Alison)

The following is surmised from a variety of incomplete bits from various sources:
William came from France circa 1860 and arrived in Arkansas.
William was allied with the Cherokee, and found his way into Indian Territory near Stilwell, Okla before incorporation into Oklahoma, probably in the 1860s.
William is not found in 1870 census.
William met Rebecca Stephenson, a married woman, possibly in Missouri.
Rebecca and then husband Morgan Stephenson were found in 1870 census with two children in Crawford Co., Mo. Rebecca and first husband also had a third child ca 1872.
Rebecca was in Indian Territory for the birth of next three children, at least by 1880.
It is apparent she was divided from her first husband, as he continued to survive during this timeframe.
Rebecca left Indian Territory between Nov 1894 and Aug 1897, returning to Missouri. She is found in Newton Co., Mo. in 1900, shown as widowed with 6 children (3 are from Deforest).
One daughter, Eliza Deforest, married and found in Stilwell, Ok in 1920 Census. She claims father born in Kentucky, mother born in North Carolina.

Clarence DeForest KS/Fl

I'm trying to find the missing link within my family tree. My Grandfather Harry Lee DeForest of Lebo, KS. Burned all the letters about our family before he died in 1984 to hide our family's past. His father was Francis DeForest, and Francis's father was Edward DeForest.

I have a last Will in Testement of a L.H. Geer of Florida Stating that a Guy by the name of Clarence DeForest and his Daughter Maude DeForest. Drove L.H. Geer's daughter mad and she ended up killing herself.

In the Will, L.H. Geer stated that Clarence was trying to take on his name and his wealth. I believe Clarence is Edward's Father although I'm not sure. After Edward my tree is broken. If anyone has any information on this let me know. Its a puzzle my family has been trying to crack for years.

Thanks,
-Jason DeForest

ego_brain25@yahoo.com

Re: John Deforest birth date 1789

Hi Tom ~

I have a John Deforest that was b. abt 1795(one census says) and another says 1790. Mine was living in Tioga Co in the 1860 & 1870 census's and he says he is brother to Betsy(Sargent) Cooper, wife of the head of house of Rufus Cooper. So this Betsy Sargent was his sister. I know that this is the John I am indeed looking for. I did not find him in 1850 in Tioga, but I did just find a John Deforest I do think was him living in Montgomery Co in 1850 age 59 married to a Sarah age 58, Living with him was a William Ehle(it looks like, but can't be sure) age 29, and a wife named Minerva 26(maybe it was John and Sarah's daughter and this William Ehle was a son in law?,) Anyway since I am thinking this was my John and he probably had this daughter Minerva living with him, with her husband, do you know who she married? It looks like Ehle but I can't make it out. And then they also have a daughter Sarah, age 2 which I do believe is a granddaughter of this John Deforest and his wife Sarah.
My ties go back to Chenango and Otsego Co. There is a Mt Hope Cemetery in Chenango Co.,where many of my Sargents and other families lived. Where is Fords Bush?

Re: John Deforest of NY

Tom ~

I have a John Deforest born abt the time of your John (within abt 5 years anyway) but I would like to know where Ford's Bush is in NY. I could not find it. I have a family of Deforest I am trying to tie into my Sargent's of Butternuts(Gilbertsville) Otsego Co.,NY. All I have on this marriage is that Sarah (Sisson) Deforest(b. abt 1770) was married twice. First to a Deforest whom I have not been able to find, and second to my 4th great grandfather , Thomas Sargent. My early history tells me that Thomas and Sarah must have met in an eastern NY county. Probably Albany, Washington, Dutchess or Columbia co., NY. Then they may have traveled at one time to the Schoharie Co area . I have from my records that Cobleskill was the location of the marriage by a Rev Newcomb,a little before 1800. I have she was a widow with 4 children, so her husband (Possibly a William Deforest must have died shortly after John's birth.). I have there were 4 children:Theodorus/Thaddeus, William, Sally (who later lived next to Thomas & Sarah Sargent and married a Dr. William Jacox) and finally John. I can't find my 4 great grandparent's marriage anywhere though. I heard from a historian that Montgomery Co. was once part of Schoharie Co. I did find a John Deforest in Miami, Montgomery Co abt 1850 and wondered if this was him living with one of his wives?.
I know this story to be partially true because in the 1860 and the 1870 census in NY, I found A John Deforest living with my relative, Betsey Sargent and her husband Rufus Cooper of Owego, Tioga Co., NY. The census says Betsy was his sister. It says he was a widow, and I found out later he was married twice. I am not sure of the name of the first born male but the person being interviewed way back in the early 1900's, thought it sounded like Tartulus so I thought it might be Theodorus or Thaddeus Deforest. Apparently the Deforest's were not living close to the Sargent's because I never find any of them except the daughter whom I know married the Jacox, and the Son John I found in the 1860 & 1870 census.

I have been stuck for over 10 years on this Deforest branch...Can someone help?

Penny
Descendants of William DeForest

1 William DeForest	b: Abt. 1770 in Possibly Fairfield Co., CT
. +Sarah Sisson	b: 1770 in RI Father: Giles Sisson	Mother: Elizabeth Arnold	d: March 07, 1843 in Butternuts twnship, Otsego Co., NY	Burial: 1843 South New Berlin, Chenango Co., NY
2 Thaddeus DeForest
2 William DeForest
2 Sally DeForest	b: August 12, 1795 in Schoharie Co., NY d: August 29, 1865 in Butternuts, Otsego Co., NY
.... +William H.
