By now you may have this information: Edward Earl DeFrates (1-19-1875) was reported in the 1900 US Census as living with his father, Raymond or Ryman DeFreitas or De Fratis (1832/1836) and caring for a son, an Edward Ray (1899; likely the same person as Ray Lewis Conner in the 1900 [listed in two households] & 1910 US Census), whose mother was Eva L Ferreira (1878-1938; surname changed to Smith; motherhood not yet proved but in 1900 Eva lists 2 of 2 living births but only one is reported in 1900 and her next child is in 1902. It looks like Edward Ray de Fraites was birthed by Eva and Edward Earl DeFraites but within two years Edward Ray was raised and then adopted by her sister Cynthia & husband Louis or Lewis Conner.) From 1910 on check Edward Ray Conner ancestry & descendents.

Later Edward Earl, your interest, married Lotus Bentley (1892-1967) and had four children.

Raymond/Ryman was born in Madina, Portugal and arrived in US about 1852. Wife's first name was Antona (1837) from Medari (Medeira?), Portugal.

Edward Earl of your question is listed as early as the 1880 US Census.

Hi

My grandfather Joseph Ivan de Freitas was born in Liverpool village in Guyana in 1909. His father was Jose de Freitas and Jose's siblings were Augustine, Mary, Julia, Constance, Rumania and Virginia. Jose was married to Maria Angela Rodrigues but she died in about 1920 so he married again apparently.I know that the first members of my family that came from Madeira to Guyana were definitely merchants and not indentured workers. No dates I am afraid.

I recently found your post and hope I an not responding to late. I am related to your grandmother Elisa da Gloria Lopes de Freitas, she is my great aunt. Her brother Joaquim Pedro Lopes is my grandfather born in Caviera, Flores in 1886. He immigrated to the US and settled with his family in California. They also had a brother Jaime Lopes born in 1884. He immigrated and settled in Massachusetts area. I have no information on his family.
Their parents were Manuel Pedro Lopes and Maria do Rosario de Freitas not married. I found your grandparents marriage record at

http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/biblioteca_digital/FSCCAC18...

It indicates that Thome Luis de Freitas was exposto in Lajes das Flores, Flores. I found his birth record at

http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/biblioteca_digital/FLFLFB18...

My family information is that he was adopted in Flores.

I have the family tree information for both Manuel Pedro Lopes and Maria do Rosario de Freitas. If you are interested I can send you the information. I would appreciate any information about your grandparents.
Re: Jerome Nathan DeFreitas

Surnames were first recorded in the Iberian (Spain and Portugal) area in the 11th century. We are all descendants of Joao de Freitas, Lord of Freitas during the reign of King Alfono Henriques. Our coat of arms includes two lions paws grasping an arrow represeting honor and achievement. Many Portuguese from MADERIA fled during the last two centuries to avoid an unpopular war with Spain and confiscation of lands and titles. My great grandparents went to British Guyana under the protection of the English Flag. We became British Citizens and established a very small colony. It was a hostile exile in a very dangerous land and in the late 1950s the remaining Portuguese again scattered. Apparently, we mostly went to England, Canada and USA. Although I am not an American, I know there were DeFreitas men from Illinois who fought in the Civil War. As a general rule, we are well educated and deeply care about the survival of our children.

I would be very interested in a copy of the list. I have seen the Portuguese government list of passport applications from that period (only discovered it a few days ago so I have not really looked at it in any depth).
Mary, Augustine De Freitas's daughter, married a Mr Coelho & died in 1925. She had several children but the only one I know of so far is Clara.

The data I have is from the period 1880-1910 of all people traveling to Guyana (Demerara in that period).I got it from the Arquivo regional do madeira; unfortunately they did not have the data for the period before 1880. There migt be somepublications on the data of the period before 1880, but from what i was able to see from the internet, it was not very userfriendly. I can send you the list I have because I got it for free. It is a very good list.

Augustine is also the name of my grandfather (dad of my father); one of the brothers of my father was also named Augustine. Do you happen to have any data on whom Mary (the daughterin your email)married?

I am hoping to find out more about my late husband's family for my children. Augustine De Freitas married Maria (Mary) Rodrigues in Guyana in about 1880-1882 & had 4 children - Mary, Joseph (my husband's grandfather), Manuel & I think Augustine. I think Maria Rodrigues was born in Madeira & came to Guyana as a teenager. I don't know anything about her husband Augustine apart from his occupation as a spirit merchant & also that he had died before 1907.
Hope someone can help.

Linda

Henry A. de Freitas of St. Vincent / Trinidad

I am seeking information on the ancestors and relations of my Great Grandfather, Henry Alexander de Freitas M.B.E., who was born in 1876 on the island of St. Vincent, BWI. He emigrated to Trinidad sometime after 1900, and became successful in the leather goods business and real estate. He served on the Port of Spain City Council for many years, as well as one term as Mayor. I am told that he was one of the youngest of his family, that he had one brother that emigrated to New York, and one that ended up in British Guiana. Thanks in advance.
Alternate spellings of de Freitas

Here are some anglicizations of the name de Freitas that I have encountered. In addition to the alternate spelling, the space between the "de" and the name is sometimes deleted, or left off completely, or the D capitalized, or some combination thereof (i.e. de Freitas, deFreitas, Defreitas, Freitas). This leads to a large number of surname variations.

ALTERNATE SPELLINGS of FREITAS:

Fraites
Fratas
Frates
Fratus
Fraytas
Fraytus
Freites
Freitaz
Freytas
Freytes
Freytez
Freytus

Note also that one group of de Freitas in Illinois, USA is known to have changed their name to Day.
I have researched my famil tree in the UK and have found many different spellings of my name. In baptism records names are spelt differently to the death records varying from de Frates, de Freitas, de Freytas and many of those that Dean mentions.

I am wondering if any of them ever went to the USA as I only go back to 1710 and some of the family members are missing, they must have gone somewhere!!!!
