Re: Michael Deegan/Deagan

The Michael Deegan I know was my great great grandfathers brother. According to the records I have, he was born in 1810 in Ireland, had 4 children; John, Sarah, Mary and Michael ages 13, 10, 8 and 5 in the 1850 census - making the Michael you may be talking about born in 1845 - but in Kingston, NY. This would mean your great great grandmother was either Sarah or Mary. Any connections? If so please advise, I am trying to determine where Michaeal and his brother, Martin b. 1827 Ireland are from in Ireland. Thank you. You can reach me at Joe@deegansanglyn.com

In response to your inquiry about your grandfather Raymond Degan, I have some census information that should help a bit, especially regarding the names of Raymond's parents.

The 1900 Federal Census for Atchison, KS has this entry (Enumeration District 44, page 10): George L. Degan, born in Missouri, 12-1867, wife Agnes, born 12-1868 in Missouri. (George's father was born in Ireland, his mother in PA. Both of Agnes' parents were born in Ireland. ) George and Agnes had three children: Teresa, born 4-1893; Raymond, born 12-1895 (differs by a year from your info); and George, born 11-1897. George Sr. worked in a hardware store. The family home was at 624 So. 8th St. in Atchison.

The 1930 census for St. Joseph, MO (Buchanan Co.) has this: George L. Degan, age 32. He is likely the youngest of the three children noted in the 1900 census, and your great uncle, despite a couple years discrepancy in the date of birth in the two censuses.
Geroge at this point worked at this point as a buyer for a wholesale hardware company. Like his father he was in the hardware business. His wife Gertrude M. listed her age as 31. They had two kids, Patricia, 5 1/2 years and Lawrence, 2 years.

This is about all I have, but your grandfather's parents were George L. Degan, Sr. and Agnes Degan. Unfortunately, I have nothing further about Raymond after the 1900 census, nor have I been able to find any direct relationship between your Degan family and my own Degan ancestors from the Atchison-St. Joe area. (Interestingly, the names George, Agnes, Teresa, Raymond, Patricia and Lawrence are also in my line, which could be only coincidental.)

If you find any connections, by all means let me know. Best wishes,
Don Sullivan

Hi, I am a little confused by who sent this reply to me, Mike Thayer or Donald Sullivan. Donald and I have conversed and he sent me a lot of information. Raymond Degan was my great grandmother's brother. So he had a brother and two sisters, Evelyn and Lorene. Lorene was my great grandmother. So we must not be talking about the same Raymond, however; I wonder if somehow they are related. My Raymond may have been born in Kansas. That is where my great grandmother was born, Atchison. Look forward to hearing back from you.

Hi, Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like different Degans. I found my Joseph & Mary in 1920 census & they are listed as having been born in Hungary & arriving America 1906 & 1910.
I have Irish connections on my side but they are Flaherty, Scott, Higgins, Hickson & McCallion surnames. Thanks for your efforts anyway.
Regards Sheryl.

I'm sorry it took so long to reply. For some reason I didn't see your note until today.

James Degan was the son of Irish immigrants. I found the following in The History of Kenosha and Kenosha Co WI, Vol. II, F. Lyman, S. C. Clarke Publishing Co, Chicago, 1916; page 187-188:
Edward A. Degan's "parents being Timothy and Mary (JORDAN) DEGAN, both of whom were natives of Ireland. The father emigrated to the United States about the year 1854, locating in the town of Pleasant Prairie in Wisconsin, where he devoted his attention to general agricultural pursuits. The last twelve years of this life were spent on another farm in Paris township, where he passed away in 1888, his demise being the occasion of deep and widespread regret. He gave his political allegiance to the democracy and desired to serve the Union at the time of the Civil war but was rejected on account of physical disability. It was in Kenosha county that he wedded Miss Mary JORDAN, whom he long survived, her demise occurring in the year 1871."
I found the same bio. I believe that there is an error. Timothy and Mary were married in Portage County Ohio. I found a record of marriage - kind of sketchy. However, all of the census records state that their first born child, James, was born in Ohio.
I'll double check Kenosha marriage records, but I think what I found is more likely.
I'm still trying to go backward. Timothy came to this country with his brother (name unknown). Timothy and the brother married two sisters ... Timothy to Mary and the other to Dora.
There may have been more Degans, but I haven't found them yet. I have found quite a few Jordans. I also can't find their port of entry - not the usual - maybe through Canada.
Talk soon.
Barbara

Hi JO-
I am a direct descendant of James Degan and Margaret Devlin. They were my great-grandparents. We've communicated before, but lost your e-mail address when my computer crashed.

They had 3 children - James T., Rose, and Mary.
James married Martha Waterman and had 1 child - James W.
James W. married Helen Gail Beckwith and had 4 children -
Paul Michael, Ann Catherine, Eleanor Ruth, and me - Barbara Joan.

I can supply even more information...
Do you have info on the original James' parents - Timothy and Mary Jordan?
I think you're overseas, so I hope you check soon.
Barbara

Don-
I am tracing some Degans from Ireland - maybe Mt. Mellick area. Timothy Degan travelled here with a brother (name unk) and entered through an unk port. They eventually made it to the Cleveland area. The two brothers married two sisters - Timothy + Mary Jordan and brother + Dora Jordan.

Timothy + Mary ended up in Kenosha County Wisconsin.

Does any of this information look familiar to you?

Appreciate any help.

Barbara

Degan/Deegan/Daagon, Deagon, D. Christopher

Looking for information regarding Irish roots of David Christopher Deegan, seen in records as Christopher Degan, Daagon, etc., born ca. 1830, emigrated to America from Ireland before 1857, when he married Eliza Ann Wall in Washington County, Georgia. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in Sandersville GA, January 31, 1863; died from wound sustained at Cold Harbor (leg amputation) 7.12.1864. (Much info provided by my distant cousin, Colleen Coston Wolling, including photo of D.C. Deegan.)

His son, James W. Deegan, who married Laura Ward in Terrell GA in 1883, was my great grandfather; he died of pneumonia at age 27, in 1887.
