Re: Degeners abt 1770 Braunschweig Germany

How interesting. Unfortunately, my particular family hasn't a Johann Friedrich Degener although I would be surprised if they weren't related. My particular family's parents were Heindrich Christian previously known as Christian Heindrich Degener. b. 1776 Quedinburg, Province of Saxony He lived most of his life in Braunschweig a Teacher/Pastor. Some of his family members changed their surname to Degner. My Heindrich was married to Louise Friederike Christine Behrens b 1779 St Andreas Braunschweig. They had 10 children and the 9th child Carl Heindrich (a Dr)immigrated to Australia 1854 from Hamburg. Do you know the names of your Johann's parents. Were they by any chance the Degener Lutheran Ministers? We are related to them through Uncles etc. The father of Heindrich Christian b. 1776 (mine) was Johann Christian b. 1740 a Lieutenant in Prince Friederich's Braunschweig Regiment. His wife was Louise Schomer, b. Ermsleben abt 1741. I have recently acquired lots of earlier information on earlier Degeners Braunschweig If this would be any help I'd be delighted to share. Interestingly, heresay, says one of Carl's sisters (possibly married) emigrated to the USA in 1854. Carl was to have gone with her but missed the boat!! My Carl had a brother another Carl b. 1806, a minister who had 2 children, a girl and a boy names unknown. If is helps at all mine were baptised either in St Andreas or St Martini Lutheran Churches Braunschweig. I am so pleased to have made contact. Usually I cannot find any connections with any Degeners.

I live in Portland, OR. I am a g-g-grand daughter of Heinrich Wilhelm Degener. (August Degener- Louisa Dieke), (Arthur George Degener-Eunice Buchl).

My father was Arthur Donald Degener (b. 1922, d. 1994), his brother was James Burton Degener (d. 1999)

My uncle lived in La Grange Park until 1996, then moved to Oregon. He thought someone had been in the Civil War...but didn't know who. There was a Degener from Red Bud, IL who served according to records posted at Ancestry.com as well as a Dieke.
Gerhard Henry Degener

My great-great grandfather was Jacob Speier (1824-1893). His first wife, whom he married in 1850, was Catharine Louise Charlotte Degener (1826-1855). Catharine Degener was the widow of Peter Eickmeyer and they had one son, Gerhard Henry (1848-1940), who later took his mother's maiden name. Catharine Degener died in 1855 when Gerhard Henry was only 7 years old, so the young boy was reared by his step-father, Jacob Speier. Jacob Speier remarried in 1855 to Anne Cathrine Henriette Eggemann (1839-1818), by whom he had ten children. I have family information on gerhard Henry Degener, his three wives, and ten children. The Degener family plot is next to the Speier family plot in St. Stephen's Cemetery in Louisville, KY.
Degener family

I have a Louise Caroline Degener in my family tree, born about 1815 or so. I do not have her parents, I know she came from Germany and married a man called Heinrich Hapke in 1846, in Randolph County, Illinois. I have been looking to fill in some information and thought maybe we could have a connection. Please contact me by e-mail at petetime@davesworld.net if you would like to. Thanks
