Dan: I found some of my genealogy stuff here at work. Actually, Michael John Degnon (b. 1856 or 1857, Cleve, OH) was your dad's grandfather and your great grandfather. As I said in my last post, he, with his first wife, Mary C. (Davis) Degnon had 4 boys, the youngest being your grandfather, John Michael Degnon (b. 1893). Mary (Davis)Degnon then died here in Cleveland in July 1894. Your grandfather, John Michael Degnon, married Mary Charlotte Davis, your grandmother, on July 16, 1925 per Michael Degnon (her grandson) would Michael be your brother or cousin? Anyway, they had three boys, John Michael, Richard William (your dad) and William G. but I don't know what the "G" stands for. I know that JOhn Michael and William G. passed away in 1993 and 2003 respectively. Any information you could provide about the more recent lineage would be appreciated. E-mail me at briggadune@aol.com. Thanks.

Dan: Michael John Degnon - who is your family line - was the cousin of my great grandmother, Mary Degnon Briggs. A am a descendant of her line of Degnons and still live in Cleveland. Michael John Degnon was born in 1857 or 1858 in the Cleveland area. You are a descendant of Michael John Degnon and his first wife, Mary Davis Degnon. He had four children by her. When she died, he married Gertrude Foxall and had 9 more kids. Prolific man. If I am not mistaken, your dad had two brothers. I don't have my ancestry stuff here at work, but I will bring it tomorrow and see how you fit in. I have quite a bit of ancestry information to give you if you want it.

Ellen Dagion, wife of Peter L. Smith

I have seen Degnon/Degnan/Dignan and Dagion and other variations for all these same people. It seems to have started as Degnan and Dignan and morphed into all the other variations. Most became Dagions. I've posted to the other variations, so I thought I would try this board.

Need information for Ellen J. Dignan, born Dec 1859 in New Jersey, daughter of James W. Dignan (abt 1828 in Ireland) and Sarah [--?--] abt 1820 in England. Siblings are John (abt 1842 Ireland), James (abt 1849 Ireland), Thomas (abt 1851 New Jersey) and Edward (abt 1856 New Jersey). She married Peter L. Smith (Jan 1848 New York) son of Anzy/Amsey And Rachel J. Smith. Peter and Ellen had one son, Ezra, born 23 Feb 1905 in Monroe, Orange, New York.

Peter Smith was godfather to William J. Farrell in 1911 in Tuxedo. Eleanor (Ellen) Smith was godmother for William's sister, Eleanor Farrell, in 1916 in Tuxedo. Both Peter and Ellen Dagion Smith are buried in St. Anastasia Cemetery in Harriman. Ellen's tombstone reads Dagion. William Farrell and Eleanor Farrell's paternal grandmother was Mary Ann Degnan, later morphed into Dagion. I'm trying to link the connection from Ellen J. Dignan/Dagion Smith to the other Dagions/Degnans/Degnons in the Monroe-Harriman-Tuxedo area.

Hello Jeannette: I believe that your grandfather may be a nephew to my grandfather. This all becomes a bit confusing
to me frankly, however if we have the name Degnon in our ancestry, there's a good bet we are related.
I wish you much luck and enjoyment with your grandfarther. For me, the passed is facinating. I'm always inspired how those before us met, accepted and over came all manner of challenges!! I know at times we need to "prode" the seniors in our life, but when you hit a cord, it's like music.
All the best to you and your, indeed!!
Regards,
JMM, Los Angeles, CA

I plan to spend some time with my grandfather this coming fall- and hope to have a better picture of his past. Also I remeber something mentioned of my grandfather siblings who were/are artists living in the NY/NJ area, maybe this is somehow related to you? I'm not sure of the connection- but thanks for the response.

Hello Jeanette:
I'm quite certain you're on the right path, however my knowledge of the Degnon line isn't up to date at all. David Briggs of Ohio, whom I've spoken with is an extraordinary sourse of facts, names and dates regarding the above legacy.
I am one of Michael John Degnon's grandsons. My mother,
Virginia Degnon McCarthy was the youngest of MJ's children, totaling , I believe 13 in all. Four (Sons?)with his first wife Mary Davis Degnon, who passed away. Then MJ Married Gertrude Foxall Degnon, they were blessed with nine children.
I'm most interested to learn more about my grandfathers siblings. This I have no knowlede what so ever.
God bless and be well.
Regards,
John Michael McCarthy
Los Angeles, CA (Born in suberb of N.Y.C)
P.S. Jeanette, you'll find information on MJ Degnon (Degnon Contracting Co.) in the archives of Queens & Long Island City, NY. I also understand that one or two of his brothers worked with him in his contracting company. That particular company was incorporated in the State of New Jersey.

Thank-You So Much!!!!!
I am very interested in this side of my history. I have an incredable kinship with my grandfather- but he is not a hugh talker! I will be spending some time with him in the coming fall!
You are correct, my grandmother was Anne Taylor. Also I have heard the names of the siblings you did mention. I believe hearing from my mother, AnneMarie Degnon (Weiss), that a cousin of hers did some research and found out the Degnon name is actually French origin? Do you have any information about this? I will certainly ask my granfather you posed-and respond to you- I think he is the last alive from his siblings- is that right?
I am very happy to have found you and this information! Thank you for your response!
Jeannette

This is definitely the same family. Your grandfather's (William's) father was David Jame Degnon who was my great grandmother's (Mary Degnon Briggs) brother. This would make your great grandfather (David James Degnon) my great great uncle. David James Degnon was born on February 13, 1873 in Cleveland, Ohio (where I still live). His parents were James and Catherine (Gorman) Degnon. David James Degnon was married on April 21, 1907 in New York City to Mary E. Fletcher (DOB: 8/18/1883 - NYC). They had six children: Coletta C. Degnon Wilkins; Robert J. Degnon; David A. Degnon; Lucille Degnon Jacobsen; George Henry Degnon and William R. Degnon (DOB: 5/27/1917)(your grandfather). Your grandmother must be Ann Taylor Degnon.

David James Degnon died at the age of 45 on March 9, 1918 in Jersey City, NJ. His wife remarried Thomas McCue, and they went on to have two more children: James McCue and Phillip P. McCue.

Ask your grandfather when in 1914 his brother, Robert, died. He was only three or four years old when he died. And where is he buried?

I would love to corrrespond with you and exchange information. David Briggs

I believe the mother remarried a man with the last name McCue. and had more children.
My grandfather, is the only one still alive, from at least the Degnon siblings. I think he had two brothers. One was a painter.
Does anyone know of a link. I think he may have been raised in Jersey City? but I'm not completely sure.?

Hello Brian: Yes I am one of many direct Grandchildren of Michael John Degnon's born in Ohio, built a substantial career and legacy in the New York Area.
His firm "Degnon Contracting Co." along with several other "entities" developed much of Queens, NY, as well as the Williamsberg Bridge, NY, NY. He was responsible for the very early constuction of the NYC sunway system and yes, the "locks" of the Panama Canal to my knowledge.
A very successful and prosperous man. You have a fine name in "Degnon" to be certain! Keep in touch, Brian. Be well.
Regards, John Michael McCarthy

John: Thank you for your April 2004 posting. This information sure fits everything I learned indirectly from your great aunt, Catherine E. Degnon. Your mother must have been Virginia. And I believe that your grandfather actually died in April 1925 (burial on 24 April 1925). I am real interested in learning this branch of the family. I tried to e-mail, but it came back. I am hoping that you can either e-mail me or post more information. Thanks.

Yes, Michael John Degnon is my Grandfather. My Mother was one of the nine children resulting through the marrage of M.J. Degnon to Gertrude Foxall (1899). M.J. Degnon was a vert successful contractor and developer in Cleveland, Ohio and later in NYC, NY. His accomplishments are many including the Williamsburg Bridge, NYC as well as the early constuction of many of NYC subways. He also was involved in the building of the "locks"of the Panama Canal. There is, to this day, a large building, near the LaGuatia Airport, the Degnon Terminal, a several hundred thousand sq,ft. terminal used when he owned the "Degnon Railroad" later sold to the Long Island Railroad. I understand he passed away in 1928 leaving 13 children from two marrages. Lot's of other interesting history here, believe you me.

Barbara: They could be, I just am not sure yet. She could be the sister of James (b. 1838 in Ireland) and John (b. 1830) Degnon. Degnon was not a real common name at that time. The year of her birth (1839) fits right in with the years of birth for James and John. but, man, she was sure a young bride! James Degnon had a daughter named Mary Degnon who married my great grandfather, George O. Briggs. John Degnon also had a daughter named Mary. Maybe they named their daughters after their sister which might also have been their mother's name. I just can't get beyond the James and John Degnon (and now maybe Mary Degnon) generation. I am going to look on a map to see where in relation to NYC Poughkeepsie is. Thanks. and I'll keep this info in my Degnon file and keep digging. David

Barbara: If you are from that area, can you check to see if James or John Degnon married in Poughkeepsie. John Degnon was probably married in 1850 or 1851 as his first child, Mary, was born in 1852. James Degnon would have been married later, maybe 1862 or 1863, because his first child, Thomas, was born January 26, 1864. Thanks.

Brian: I am related to him. My great grandmother (Mary Degnon Briggs) and he were first cousins. I have found out a great deal about his family. He was married twice and had a lot of children. I can provide you with his info, his wives' info, and a lot about his children. E-mail me.
