I did find that Aaron DeGrfoot (son of Edward & Martha) married Sarah Merrill. This was the info I was looking for years ago. It's the line you listed below. I did not do a lot of research on this line. I was more interested in the merrill line, but thanks for the response.

I am researching Peter and Cornelius DeGroot. They lived in Coeymans, New York and in Coxsackie and Athens, New York.
Cornelius was born in 1754 and married Marie Van Loon. Their children were Rachel and Albert and maybe more. Peter married Catherine Hallenbeck father Martin Hallenback. Their children were Hannah, Staats, Marie, Rachel, Catherine, and Magdelene. Peter died in 1799 in Coeymans. Catherine remarried Jacob Van Loon. Cornelius records say his father was Staats or Cornelius. I find a record in 1776 of Staats witnessing a will. Does anyone know this family. Thank you

Hi Harm..

I'm sorry to say I'm still at my early 1800s brick wall. Don't know anything positive about my DeGroots before John & Sarah from Ulster County in the early US census. There is mentioned in a book on the Hudson River about an Abraham? DeGroot that was a Hudson steambaot captain that lived in NYC I think around that time. Not much more about him though in the book but he sounded famous. If you want the title I'll be happy to dig it out and send it to you.

My latest clue that I need to get up to Goshen/Newburgh someday to check is Edward DeGroot's wife' death in Newburgh in 1862 and burial in Slate Hill Cem. If I can get the obit it might have some clues and maybe her maiden name. from there who knows where it goes.

Happy Hunting
Dan C.

Regarding Henry and Huiberdina DeGroot from the Green Bay, Wisconsin area...

Hendricus De Groot, the son of Antonius DeGroot and Geertruida van Boxtel, was born on October 27, 1818 in Uden Province Noord Brabant, Holland.

He married to Huiberdina Van Rooij on February 9, 1850 and they had several children:

Anton De Groot born in Wisconsin in 1851 and recorded as age 9 for the 1860 census

Peter Johannes De Groot born February 28, 1853 in Buchannon, Outagamie County, WI and died December 2, 1922

John De Groot born February 12, 1855 in Buchannon, Outagamie County, WI and died December 10, 1920

Adrian De Groot, a carpenter, born November 22, 1857 in Buchannon, Outagamie County, WI and died August 7, 1917

Martinus De Groot born June 14, 1859 in Preble, Brown County, WI and died May 31, 1942

Henry De Groot born July 8, 1861 in Preble, Brown County, WI and died March 9, 1951

Mary Gertrude De Groot born April 26, 1866 in Preble, Brown County, WI and died July 26, 1949

Hendricus DeGroot came to the United States on April 19, 1850.

According to his obituary from the Green Bay Advocate of Monday, April 10, 1905:

"Henry De Groot came to this country in 1850 and came direct to Green Bay from Holland where he was born. He only stayed here a short time and then went to Winnebago County where he lived for 8 years going to Bay Settlement in 1858. He lived in Bay Settlement for 19 years, then moving to the town of Preble where he lived until 1890. He then moved to Green Bay where he lived with his son, John until 7 months ago when he made his home with his son Peter where he died. He has 50 grandchildren living."

A farmer all of his life, according to the 1860 census he lived in the Town of Scott (p.272) with the farm valued at $500 and the contents $400.

Later in his life Henry moved in with his son John and family. John’s wife Annie learned the Dutch language even though she never studied it, as that is all Henry spoke. According to his granddaughter Anna Marie Turek, Henry was a "crab." He would kick you if you were doing something he didn’t like which could really hurt as he always wore wooden shoes in the house. She remembers that when her grandfather was living with them, Henry was always up early to start the fire but then he’d stick his feet in the stove while her mother Annie had to work around his feet and the wooden shoes!

Henry De Groot died on April 8, 1905 in Green Bay, Wisconsin at 86 years of age. He was a widow at the time and living with his son Peter at 1020 Stuart Street in Green Bay. The family story goes that Henry thought that his son John, wife Annie and John’s oldest boy were talking about him and that’s the reason Hank moved out to Peter’s house. His death was attributed to exposure to cold, old age and Bright’s disease, and he is buried in the Allouez Cemetery.
Re: Degroot's from the Netherlands to USA

Hi, my father is Dudley Edward DeGroot, born in 1927 in California, his father is Dudley Sargent DeGroot born in 1899 in Indiana, and his father is Edward DeGroot, not sure where or when he was born.

Our family lore has our original de Groot coming over from the Netherlands in the 1660s and I have found ships records that show male de Groots arriving in 1661/2 and 3, but cannot connect the dots, any info you have would be appreciated, best- Dave

Yes Judy,
Pieter and his bro., my GGgrandfather Daniel Alexander had a brother Adrian who came over on the boat with them from Zeeland, arriving NY. Can you give me some dates and information and perhaps we can hook them up? Adrian was originally thought to be Adriantje but when we got the ships manifest, we discovered a brother, with two children.
Pieter, Daniel and Adrian's father was Jannis, or John in English. All of these names are extremely common in the Netherlands. After the ship docking we lose track of Adrian.
Looking forward to hearing back from you on this.
Karen

Re: DeGroot Family

Hi! Sorry I didn't respond before now. This is the first I have looked up this surname. My husband had a g-grandmother named Eke DeGroote DeHeer who was married to a John DeHeer. They lived in NJ but were originally from Holland. Our information indicates that she was born in 1880 and died November 1918. My husband is descended from John & Eke's daughter Sadie DeHeer McManus.

If this sounds like your DeHeer family, please let us know.

Lois & Barry

Degroot(e)>Clark and Norma

Looking for anyone related to Clark V. & Norma (Raley) Degroot(e). Norma was a daughter of David Davis & Nellie (Sackett) Raley, a granddaughter of Samuel B. & Sarah Davis (Walker) Raley and a great-granddaughter of George E. & Harriet (Mercer) Walker. Clark Degroot(e) is in 1920 Census at Rutland, Humboldt County, Iowa. George E. & Harriet (Mercer) Walker, of Illinois, were ggg-grandparents of the current US President George Walker Bush. I am not related. This query is for narrative research purposes related to early history of the two-presidents Walker Family. I am seeking contacts who might have knowledge of the early Raley family.

Re: need info about Patrick Degroat

In response to your inquiry. Pat DeGroat is my great-great grandfather. His daughter was Elizabeth -- I don't know about "Mary Elizabeth". It is possible that your Joseph is brother to My Patrick. Patrick was born in Canada. (His father was a loyalist -- we believe) He and his wife Lucy Smith were married in St Lawrence Co. NY. They lived their married life in McHenry Co Ill. Please reply if this is useful and you know more about whether they might be related.
