Edward E. De Groote, 80, of 65828 Shavehead Lake Shore Drive, Vandalia, formerly of Mishawaka, died at 9:05 p.m. Sunday in St. Joseph Hospital after an illness. Mr. De Groote was born Oct. 20, 1907 in Mishawaka, where he lived most of his life. He had lived Vandalia the last 10 years. He worked in the stockroom of Uniroyal for 47 years before retiring in 1969. On August 18, 1927, he married Ruby Marsh. She survives, along with a daughter, Sharon Henkel of Diamond Lake; a son, Robert De Groote of Mishawaka; eight grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. A son Jackie proceeded him in death.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church of which he was a member. A wake service will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Church. Burial will be at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park. Friends may call from 1 to 4 and 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Thallemer - Goethals Funeral Home.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Cancer Research Institute, Donation and Bequest Division, 133 E. 58th St., New York, N.Y.
Mr. De Groote was a past member of the Mishawaka Chapter of the Knights of Columbus and the Eagles. He served as president of Local 65 of the United Rubber Workers Union and had held other of the union.
