Dear Karen,

Thanks for the tip about the Ostfreisland site. I have reposted my original message there--and, of course, the correct name should have been Henrietta Bierman DeGroot.

Best, John Bierman
Dayton, OH
biermajw@notes.udayton.edu

I am fairly certain the people you are looking for are of Ostfriesen descent. I would recommend signing up for the Ostfriesen list if you are not a member as they have a wealth of information and someone may be missing a Henrietta in their family. Is she a Johnson or a Biermann?

Greetings,
My grandfather was Ray De Groote. He passed away August of 1974 at the Mendocino Coat Hospital in Fort Bragg. According to his death certificate, he was divorced and the informant was a Mrs. L. Velut of the same address as he. Ray had left Iowa and his family about 1938 and traveled all over the world. According to his death certificate he had lived in CA for over 50 years which would be incorrect. We know that during the Korean War he was in Oakland, CA. Other than that we do not know what he had done in his life. I am sorry but I do not know Geraldine. I dont know if this has anything to do with your gal but Ray originally married Irene Buscher. Irene's sister married Roy Gilbert in Iowa. Roy died in 1976 at Encinatas, CA. Marie just passed away not too long ago but was still in CA. There is one sibling left of Irene Buscher and she turned 101 last month.
If your Geraldine was married to my grandfather and you do find her, please let me know, I would love to talk to her. I have always wondered what happened to my grandfathers personal effects. I have been looking for a picture of him for a long time.
Good luck and keep me posted,
Karen in Iowa

Some pratical tips:

Surname distribution
http://patrom.fltr.ucl.ac.be/contemporain/contemporain.cfm
These database can be accessed with partial names
Ex: Enter raub for Deraud
This gives you the opportunity to find some surname variations

Surname DERAUD:
That's probably a typo. Could be DEBBAUDT. That surname was more in use during the 19th century. Most moved to the urban areas. With as result less children and less persons with that surname 2 to 4 generations after that migration.
It's also a surname typical for Gent and surrounding towns.

So I would concentrate on the province East-Flanders and/or the Districts Gent/Dendermonde/Sint-Niklaas.

Greetings,

Luc
She had posted several bulletin boards lookin for names: Halkyard, Purdy, etc. Same names I'm researcing. Only recently discovered a link between Geri and my family. Trying to contact her or her child(ren). Email has failed as did snail-mail. Her last postings to bulletin boards was in 2001/2002. Any info on Geraldine Gilbert-DeGroote will be greatly appreciated. I believe the R. is for Raymond.

Karen,
I tried to answer your message several ways but I must not be doing something right because it is not showing up.
I 'm sure we are related. Your grandfather Jannis who you said came to the USA in 1847, was indeed the son of Alexander and Adriana(Van Male) De Groote. I show Jannis was born in 1794, He had 3 brothers that I know of and one sister.
1) Cornelis born 1789 married to Martijna Aalbrestge , married in July 23, 1835,
2) Izaak, born in 1796, married Adriana de Jonge, married July 2, 1820 in Axel, he died in 1848, This is my line, My great grandfather Cornelis was the 13 th child and last who was born in 1846. Grandpa, left for Walworth ,New York in 1865, at age 19. He returned to Holland in 1879 to marry my grandmother Jacoba Dupons, returned to New York in 1880.
3)Jacob married on Sept 5, 1839, to Johanna Maria Faaij
4)Cornelia was married to Pieter Bueller on October 31, 1827 in Waterlandkerkje.
When my grandfather came to the US, customs took off the E off our last name, hence de Groot.
Where do you live?Where did Jannis settle in 1847? Jannis was the Uncle to my great grandfather Cornelis.
I live in San Francisco,California but the bulk of the family still lives in the Rochester,New York area. My brother lives in Texas. I'd love to hear from you. Why not write direct to me at dadjjrlm@pacbell.net.I'd love to share any information with you.

Seeking DeGroote family from Flanders (Belgium). According to my gr-gr-grandmother, she was related by marriage to a Count Phillip DeGroote who was engaged in shipping or shipbuilding. Anybody know anything about him? He may have married a Schmitz, but I'm not sure. Family legend has it that he owned a castle on the Rhine. The time period would be perhaps the 1700's as my gr-gr-grandmother said the connection was "way back." She was born 1861.
Diane at dhgenie@att.net

Looking for recent/living Degroote

Geraldine Gilbert-DeFroote or her spouse or children if any.
Here is the tree branch:

Mary A. Halkyard (b.1839 Oldham England) m. Jamed Purdy (b abt. 1831 England) They have 13 children (of which 5 survive into the 20th century)

Their oldest Daughter Malinda (b. 1864 in England) marries William Benfield (B. 1850). They have about 10 children.

First daughter of Malinda and William Benfield is named Mary (b.1880). She marries Thomas Henry Gilbert (b.1872). They have 4 children.

Their 3rd child Richard J. Gilbert (b. 1906) marries Mathilda Gallardo (b. abt. 1920). They have at least 2 children.

One of Richard and Mathilda's children is named Geraldine. She marries R. DeGroote and they have at least 1 child. This is the family I'm looking for.

I believe this most of this family tree is planted in California. Although, some of the Benfields seem to have been born in Washington but most moved back to Californina.
