Purley Earnest DeHaas, 96,
of 234 Eagleville Road, Blanchard,
died May 20, 2011 at the Susque-View Home in Lock Haven.
He was born Oct. 27, 1914 in Blanchard, a son of the late Earnest and Sara Ellen Spangler DeHaas.
On Aug. 21, 1946 in Bellefonte, he married Anna Mae Rupert, who survives at home.
A former employee of Piper Aircraft Corp. and the Pennsylvania Railroad, he retired from the former Hammermill Paper Co. after 33 years on Jan. 1, 1980.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1943 to 1945. He received the Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with seven Bronze Service Stars, the Philippine Liberation Medal with one Service Star and the American Campaign Medal
Purley was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Blanchard. He was a member of the Hammermill Retirees and was a charger member and organizer of the Liberty Township Sportsman Club. He was also a member of the Bellefonte Senior Citizens Center and served as a forest Fire Warden in the Sproul Forest District for more than 70 years. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Rodney (Mary Ann) DeHaas of Duncannon; a granddaughter, Deanna (Eric) Nelson of Falls Church, Va., and two great-nephews, Scot and Allan DeHaas of Blanchard.
At the request of Mr. DeHaas, there will be no services or visitation. In his continued concern for others, Mr. DeHaas has donated his body to the Humanities Gift Program.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Liberty Baptist Church, Blanchard.
