I am hoping that someone out there might be able to help me. I'm trying to find information on the family of George Francis Dibert, who was my great, great grandfather. He was born on Jan. 22, 1841 in Johnstown, PA, and died Jan. 27, 1938 in Helena, Montana. Based on his marriage license application and census records his father was Samuel Dibert and was born in Pennsylvania. His mother was Dillian Dactor/Dactre and was born in New York. According to his obituary article, published Jan. 28, 1938, in the Montana Standard (Butte, Montana) George "...was born in Pennsylvania and at an early age came West via covered wagon. The train on which he rode was guided across the plains by Indian scouts. Seeking adventure and fortune, he soon learned the trails and for some time served as a guide and scout for later arrivals in the West." The article goes on to say that "...because of his wide knowledge of the country...he was selected to ride the Pony Express, a position he held for several years. With the discovery of gold in Montana he made his way to the territory in search of his fortune." If this sounds familiar to anyone, please let me know.
