Hi,
On roots web Don Hutchinson seemed to have done extensive research on the Deighton/ De Dyghton family. I tried to contact him but my emails wouldn't deliver. The email was as follows:
Was really interested to see your research on the Deighton family. I am related to the Deightons through my father’s family.
William Deighton married Margaret Allinson in 1708.
Their son William married Jane Hall in 1739.
Their son William married Isabella Thompson on 19 Sep 1768 (you have it as an unknown Elizabeth but on the same date,)
Their daughter Elizabeth Deighton married Thomas (K)Naggs in 1805
Their daughter Martha Naggs married William Smurthwaite in 1831
Their daughter Elizabeth married John Forrest in 1855.
Their son Thomas Smurthwaite Forrest married Ann Elizabeth Forster in 1873
Their son Thomas Forrest is my Grandfather.
The William that you have marrying an Elizabeth we are pretty positive actually married an Isabella Thompson. We have viewed the marriage on Durham Records Online. This record gives the exact same date as you give for the marriage. We have also looked at the Durham Records online baptisms for William’s children which you have It also cites Isabella and not Elizabeth as the mother of the children you give on the baptism records they are the same names and dates as the children you give.
Another thing that interests me is the connection between William Deighton born in 1686 and his father Thomas De Dyghton born 1663 – it seems to me that a lot depends on this connection being accurate. Especially as he’s the only sibling with the Deighton spelling. What is your evidence for this? In looking at IGI records we note that they say that Thomas Dyghton was Deighton as was his father Thomas.
Have you seen any records which give the name as De Dyghton rather than Deighton?
Really fascinated to know if these are definitely my roots particularly as it takes me back to an ancestor who fought in the crusades in Palestine in the 1100s!!!. So far I have come from a long line of pitmen, lead miners, and agricultural labourers!
I’d be really grateful for any information you could provide.
Best Wishes
Helen Miller (nee Forrest)
