DEISS from Schwetzingen, Germany to Brooklyn, New York

I'm helping a lady in California searching for her great grandparents' roots. So far, the great grandfather is French born & I have found his ancestral lineage. He married a lady named Elisabeth DEISS (born about Dec 1861 at Schwetzingen, Baden, Germany d/o Adam DEISS & Annie SNERLING) in 1894 in Brooklyn, New York in a Catholic church. She came alone to the States. That's all I have as clues about her for now.

Nicole Descottes

Some of my family members have been researching our ancestry over the last 10 years and they have determiend that our family name was shortened (upon arrival at Ellis Island) from Deiss to Dise. We show a lot of our family settled in Dorchester, MA and the MA vacinity. Some of the family members moved to upstate New York. Have you run across the name Dise at all? I do not have any specific names at the moment, but I was curious to Google "Deiss".

Anna Wilhelmina Deiss?

Hello All!

My great-great-grandmother was Anna Wilhelmina Deiss, who lived from about 1850 until about 1925. We think she was born in Kempfenbrunn, Hesse, Germany, and we know she died in Castleton-on-Hudson, New York, USA, after having married Henry Steinberger. We have no idea who her parents were, but we do know that her sister was Katherine/Katarina Deiss. Is there anybody here who could tell me any more about her or her parents?

Thanks!
-Karen Paul

Deiss Family in Texas

I believe our Deiss families may be connected, geographically at least. My husband's great grandmother was Elizabeth Deiss (she may have gone by Ada), born in England around 1855. Her parents were Louis and Johanna Deiss; Louis born in Hannon and Johanna (unknown maiden name) born in Hesse Castle. I could estimate their birth years to be somewhere in the 1820's. On 3 December 1877 Elizabeth Deiss married Benedict Ehmann, born 11 July 1833 (quite a bit older than her) in Boston, MA, and by 1880 they had settled in Brownwood, TX. If any of these names are familiar to you, please contact me.

Hi Michelle,
I haven't had a lot of time to do research lately. The wife and I recently bought a house and moved, and the weather hasn't exactly been cooperative for travelling around. I found that my Martin (b. 1823) came to America on the steamship City Of Brussels. I'm still working to get a copy of the manifest to see if other family members came with him. At least for now, with all the other related people in such close vacinity in the cemetery, I will consider your Martin quite possibly a son of my Martin. Now I need to find documentation. I should be able to make some progress over this spring and summer, as I live not far from Mount Peace Cem, and it's much easier to dig things up when you are local. I grew up only about 1 mile from Mount Peace, and never knew it was there, until last year...
Mike
you can contact me directly if it's easier:
mikgen@mail.com

Mike,
I have just begun looking into the Deisz family (also spelled DICE in 1880 census). I, too, am looking for the family of Martin Deisz, but born about 1853. I am trying to determine if his wife, Mary S., was Mary SCHECK. The Frederick and Herman you noted in your post (b. 1879 and 1887 respectively) were their children. In 1900, they are living in Akron, Ohio. Martin and Mary have been married 22 years, 11 children born, 8 living. Do you have any additional info on this Deisz family? Many of the Schecks are also buried at Mount Peace Cemetery.
Thanks!
Michelle

Re: Deiss in Germany

Just another heads-up, possibly a related line...
my Deiss/Deisz line (I just started recently working on this part of my family) is in Akron, Ohio.
Martin Deisz, born July 18, 1823 in Feuerbach, Baden, Germany; died May 4, 1890, probably in Akron, Ohio where he is buried. There are a number of Deisz/Deiss burials in Mount Peace Cemetery where Martin is. Included is my great-great-grandmother Amalia Deisz and her husband Wilhelm Frederick Haeferle. (spelled Hoeferle on gravemarker). She was born Nov 6, 1850 in Baden, Germany, died Jan 9, 1926. Wilhelm Haeferle was born Nov 10, 1850 in Leil, Germany, died Apr 10, 1930.
Some others in the same cemetery are:
Mildred Louise Deisz 1914 - 1930
Paul F Deisz Dec 8, 1934 - Sep 3, 1940
Louis Deisz (I believe a brother of my Amalia, but not proven) 1862 - 1903
his wife Louise Deisz 1866 - 1923
Fred Deisz 1879 - 1951
Herman Deisz Oct 7, 1887 - Dec 31, 1947
Herman is buried right beside my Martin Deisz, so likely a direct relation.
This of course does not include women that are buried under married names I don't know about...
I know my Amalia and husband Wilhelm came to America in 1879-1880, and Wilhelm's naturalization document was signed as a witness by Martin Deisz (in 1886). Don't know if Martin came with them or was already here - I haven't been able to find a ship passenger list with either family yet. Martin's gravemarker (what I can read of it - it's rather worn down) does not mention a wife, so I might be inclined to guess that she may have died in Germany, and he moved here later in his life, maybe with Amalia and Wilhelm.
Any insight?

Many families named children after ones who died young. So it is not unusual, especially in the 1800s to find families where a child is named after a dead sibling. Thus your Elmer could have been born after his brother Elmer died.

Hello Jon: I will be doing further research on the name DEISS at our local LDS FHC soon. I am in contact with a genealogist in England with the name DICE who says that a DEISS could have come over to England from Germany a thousand years ago. The DICE name is dying out as our DEISS name here in California. She also told me about a Castle DY'SE in Germany so I will be searching for what I can find on that. I have found connections etymologically with DEISNER, DEISTER, DEIST. I am on various rootsweb lists so will sharing what I find from time to time. Thanks again for your work.
Hi, Sharon -

My grandfather, Arch, was John's son. My family written history says that he came from Germany when he was only 13 years old. There is also a mention that he came from Baden Baden, but I have been unable to find any mention of the surname Deiss in German records.

Do you have any information on Arch's siblings and their decendents? I have their names and names of their spouses but nothing more.
Deiss in Germany

In this message board I can find a lot about the Deiss family in USA. Does somebody have a few information about the parents of the families who emigrated from Germany? I looked at my ancestry back to 1680 but unfortunately only in direct line, never found somebody who went to America. The very first Deiss I found out was Hans Heinrich Deust born in 1680 (names changes from Deust to Deihs and then to Deiß, special writing of Deiss). The family lives in that time (and one part of the Deiss family still do) in Neuenhof near Eisenach. If anybody could help me with information one generation before they came to America, maybe I could find any a connection. See as well http://www.deiss.info and have a special look at "Ahnentafel". Greetings to all Deiss families in the States and around the world. Martin Deiss

Ada Deiss / Benedict Ehmann

In researching my husband's grandmother, Rosa Lee Ehmann, daughter of Benedict Ehmann - I finally found a tidbit of information - a record at familysearch.com shows her parents as Benedict Ehmann and Ada Deiss and her birth place as Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland, England. This is the first we've known of her mother and I am hoping someone here has some information on her. Rosa Lee Ehmann was born in 1882, so I'm going to estimate Ada was born between 1840 and 1865. Anyone out there recognize the name(s)?

Assistance needed!

I live in Richardton, ND for nearly a year now at a Benedictine Abbey and since my arrival I have been searching for my roots due to the large number of German-Russian people who are apart of this community.
I am originally from White River, SD which is located in the south-central region of the state. There are only a few Deiss's in that area since my father has only 2 older sibilings, but family is still very abundant because his mother is a Deutsch which she has 10 sibilings-some living and some not.
I have some information that only goes back to maybe the late 1800s and only one generation. My father is Robert Leo Deiss who was born in 1939. My grandfather is Jacob Deiss who was born in 1898, he married Mathilda Deutsch who was born in 1908. Both have ancestry that goes back to the Bessarabia area in the Black Sea region during the many years that the Germans were immigrating to Russia.
I would be grateful for any information given in hopes to understand this genealogy background and also to meet the relatives who I would come to know through this research for not only the meeting of distant relations, but for the passing it onto our future generations.

Unified by time,
+Darren J.

Hello, Terri!
I've just read your September message about John W. Deiss Caddie Hays. Well, John William Deiss was my great uncle. He was the son of Anton and Catherine (Cramer) Deiss.
John married Caddie Hays on Sept. 27, 1888 in St. Louis. They had one child (as far as we know) by the name of Antoinette. The child died at the age of four. We do not know when the child was born or when she died. She is buried in Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis and was moved there from Holy Trinity Cemetery on 31 March 1900. John William Deiss was born 24 Sept. 1864 in St. Louis and died here on 15 April 1908. His wife Caddie was born on 7 June 1864 and died on 30 August 1903. They are buried in Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis.
I wish you knew more about the Deiss family. We are tracking John William's parents, especially his father---Anton Deiss. If you know anything, let us know. Good luck!
Virginia Timm

Hi, Terrie!
Anton Deiss married Catherine Cramer (sometimes spelled with Kramer) on January 26, 1862 in St. Louis, MO. These are the parents of John William Deiss who married Caddie Hays. We are currently trying to find out specifically where Anton Deiss came from---oral tradition is that he and his siblings (we think 3 others) docked at New Orleans and children were divided up: Anton in St. Louis, sister Theresa in Milwaukee, and two older boys in Minnesota. Their parents had died on the crossing and were buried at sea. We have no confirmation with any documents for this and we continue to search. If you learn ANYTHING, we'd sure like to know.
The Deiss name is pronounced "Dice". Sometimes you will see it as Deis. Glad we could help. Thanks for anything you can pass along. Good luck. I assume you are a relative of Caddie Hays. Is this correct? What else can you tell us about her? She was born in Ohio, you say. Do you know how she got to MO to marry John Deiss?

Virginia

Martin,

I did not see any other replies to your message, but wanted to acknowledge and say hello. My Deis (also shows as Deiss in some documents) family first appeared in Dayton, Ohio about 1880. My problem has been that my g-g grandfather Joannes Deis (born 1851 in Germany) died of typhoid in 1894, which evidently broke many ties within the family. He had married Marie Dambacher in 1885, and they had 6 children. As near as I can tell, his father may also have been Joannes and his mother Cresentia (changed to Catherine), and I believe my g-g- grandfather had a brother Joseph and sister Catherine. I believe they were from the Wurtemmberg. There is also another large Deis family in Dayton Ohio originally from the same area - the patriarch for that family is Simon Deis, and the immigrants were John, George, and Barbara. I am always interested in any leads, links, or suggestions.

Ron Deis

I posted above that my husband's great-grandparents were Benedict Ehmann and Ada Deiss. I now have a divorce record, though, dated 1893 in Brown county, TX, for Benedict Ehmann and Elizabeth Ehmann. I thought there could be a connection to your Elizabeth Deiss, born 1840. The way things are typed into these data bases, Eliz could look like Ada. Can you tell me where she died in 1908? The information I have is so sketchy - mostly rumor and stories - but I have been told that Ada or Elizabeth may have lived in New York later on. Only two children are mentioned in the divorce decree, Rosa Lee Ehmann and Benedict Ehmann. We didn't even know the younger Benedict existed. Any help at all would be appreciated.

My maternal grandfather was Oscar Deiss son of one of three Deiss brothers who emigrated here from Germany. My mother has the immigration records and the contact in Germany where the family of 12 of the mayor lived. According to distant relatives there, the name has died out in that town but can be seen in cemetery. If anyone is interested in this line, let me know and I will get specifics.

The reason you might be having trouble finding Deiss in Gemany is that it was Theiss/Theis when in Germany and When the came to America it was changed due to pronouncation(spelling again)...to Deis...Deisz, Dies Dice, Tice, etc........mine finally became Dice....but their are many different changes...if you find anything don't for get me....I am hunting also...I have alot on my GG Grandfather Augustus Deis/Dice in Indiana...but boy has it taken time...and I think he ended up dieing in Montana...still hunting on that....Nancy Dice Baker

hello terrie,
as far as it concerns the german part of the deis'es the pronouncation of 'deis' is similar to the english 'dice'. the surname is not found very often here, sometimes it's written with a 'ß' (i'm adreid you dont have that sign on your keyboard). the other form 'dies' is not so often found here in germany, cause it has a everyday-meaning too, it means 'this one'. hope i helped a bit

joachim
