HI Beverly
I have some evidence that my Scottish ancestor William Eckford was Henry Eckford's brother. I have email chatted with Eckford James De Kay about the family about 10 years ago - he sent me pictures, tree details, etc on the descendants of Henry Eckford - but I didn't know he had written a book. I am interested to know what Eckford said about Henry's immediate family in the book. In particular what evidence is sited for Henry's parents being Henry Eckford and Janet Black. And was it as he told me back then "Rev" Henry Eckford or just Henry Eckford. And is there any indication of other family members in that original familiy from Kilwinning/Irvine Scotland. I have some evidence in the form of a newspaper clipping from a deposition that William's son made in the mid 1800s that Henry had 4 brothers (James, Peter, William, John) and one step brother (John Allen).
Regards
Tim Jones
Sydney Australia
Hi Catherine,

I'm so sorry to hear about your grandmother. I was so hoping to actually meet her - and you.

You will be surprised to hear that my mother sent me the article you wrote in the Binghamton Press - and we were absolutely thrilled when we saw it. My Mother's maiden name was Monroe (Nancy). Her grandmother was Helen DeKay, who's sister was your great-grandmother's sister.

My Mom still talks about having gone to Aunt Christine's house on Upper Front Street (now the nursing home as you likely well know this better than myself); and also knew of your grandmother - and that she had some exciting adventures in her life. I started doing genealogy on my Dad's side of the family, but I never got a chance to get into my Mom's...and hearing about your grandmother and great-grandmother I always thought they would be fascinating to know about and such interesting full characters.

So you see, when your article was in the paper - I thought - great! I'm going to have to look her up very soon....and well, then time has gone by.

I live in London now with my husband - and have lived overseas for 7 years now. My hobby of genealogy is still burning, just don't get as much of a chance as I'd like to do the research.

I must ask you - did you ever hear the rumour/story about that Eleanor Roosevelt visited your great-grandmother and her husband in the house on Front Street? I just wondered if you did?? We heard a version that it was she was having an affair with her chauffeur and they used to visit your grandmother when they were in Upstate NY - I sent an email to the Roosevelt Library to ask if there was any correspondence with any Bolands in upstate, but unfortunatly, they didn't have any. I even started reading ER biography hoping to find some clues.

I must say again, it was really a fantastic article you wrote - and really got my mother and I excited about finding out more about your grandmother and great-grandmother. Mom always says her fondest memories as a child were going to visit.

I'd love to hear any stories you'd care to share, and if there is any info that I have that you would be of interest in - please ask!

Please accept my apologies for not getting in touch sooner.

Hope to hear from you soon :-)
Michelle (McGoff) McCann
michellemcgoff@yahoo.com

Hi Michelle,

Christine DeKay Boland is my great-grandmother. That must make us cousins many times removed! I found your post doing a search for various family names. My grandmother, Evelyn Boland Hill, just died - she was the oldest of two children born to Frank and Christine Boland (her younger brother, Francis "Zip" Boland, died in 1989). Evelyn was the last surviving member of that immediate family.

I'm curious to know where you are in your research. I see there are no other replies to your post, but wonder if you have made progress in other avenues? I'd be interested to know anything you've found out - now that my grandmother has died, we've lost our closest link to that part of the family.

Thanks,

Catherine Hill Gordon
(my family name Hill comes from Evelyn's marriage to my grandfather, James E. Hill, also of Binghamton, N.Y.)

cathywho@yahoo.com

I'm am just beginning research on a Joseph DeKay (b.1851 -d.1912 in Little Meadows, PA) married to Nora Gould (b.1868 -d.1954 in Little Meadows, PA). They had two daughters, Christine Dekay (b.1890 -d.1974) [married to Francis Boland] and Hazel DeKay (b.1895 - d.1985) (my g-grandmother) who married Martin Monroe.

Christine DeKay Boland lived in a large home on upper Front Street, Binghamton, NY. The house was given to charity and now exists as the Elisabeth Manor Nursing Home.

The only data I have on Joseph DeKay at this time is that he had two sisters who married men from New York City.

Is anyone researching DeKay families from Pennsylvania/New York?

Michelle McGoff-McCann
michellemcgoff@yahoo.com

Bill,
Wow, you nailed it! This has to be them. Everywhere they lived they were mining. The last place Alfred appears is in Canfield (now Bakersfield), Kern, Ca. in The Great Register. His is a carpenter, age 58 in 1884 and his middle name is Alonzo. I'm still looking for his death but he doesn't show up in the 1900 Census. I live in Bakersfield so I'll keep checking the cemeteries, but my guess is his death wasn't recorded. I'll be adding a gedcom file to ancestry.com in a few days. You'll find the DeKay line by searching for Oregon Akers or Aurora DeKay.
I have orderd the microfilm of the newspaper from Lincoln County, Nv. and I will let you know if there is more info on the murder of Esther or the execution of Michael.
This also makes me a 5th great grandchild of Col. Thomas DeKay. Thank you so much. I would be very interested in any other info you have on the family. Jill

Bill, Yes, by all means, the information you emailed not only helped, but is way more that I had hoped for. Thank you so much. It would be interesting to know when and why the spelling variations occurred. I noticed that George E. DeCay's name was spelled with the C on the 1880 census. For some reason, I assumed that was a variation provided by the census taker -- the other names on that census in that neighborhood where I am familiar with the families, also had some very interesting spelling.

I believe I have checked this board before for hints about my DeCay (DeKay) family, and maybe have even posted before, and it was on a whim I checked it and found your post yesterday. So glad I did!

Again, thank you.
Pam

Hello...

I hope the material I emailed you will help. Perhaps some other cousins will come forth and say "hello" to us here in the DeKay forum. By the way, it was interesting to note that George E. DeKay used the DeCay spelling throughout his life, just as my DeCays did. I'd love to find out when and why the many spelling variations came into use.

Bill

There are a few DeKAY's that a connection has not been made to Jacob Theuniszen DeKEY of Holland who came to New Amsterdam before 1658.
I do not have all the data from the book in my gen. program, only my husband's direct ancestors so I could not do a search that way.

Greetings,
Wonder if you have anyting in that big book about Juliana DeKay of Goshen, N.Y., who married Capt. James Bunyan of New York City? (According to my great-great-great-grandfather Col. James Bunyan Morgan) Juliana DeKay was a descendant of the Depeysters, De Kays, and Gales. Her father Major George DeKay and her grandfather Col. Thomas DeKay (Esq.) both lost their lives nearly at the same time (circa 1757) in the Indian Wars previous to the Revolution - in the western part of the State of New York. She had one brother, Col. George DeKay Jr. - who left two sons, D. James E. DeKay of New York; and Commodore Geo. DeKay III, of New York; and one daughter, Julia DeKay, who married Ch. Augustus Davis of New York - he was the author of the celebrated Jack Downing letters.

Juliana DeKay and Capt,. James Bunyan had one daughter, Margaret Bunyan (1775-1852), who married Gen. John Morgan, of Prospect Near Princeton, in 1795.

Thanks for anything you might find. I am, most gratefully yours,
John Alexander Craig

James Wolfe DeKay - DeCay Line

The DeCay in my family is my g-grandmother, Abbie Jane DeCay, b. June 11, 1840 of James Wolfe DeKay and Abigail Gardner (often spelled DeCay). She married John Joline Smith, b. July 15, 1841, son of Hannah Vail and Perker Smith of Sussex Co. NJ in Big Flats, Chemung Co. NY. The DeCays, Vails and Smiths all appear to have lived near each other in NY and NJ, and removed North and West in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, arriving in Chemung County, NY where many now rest in peace - including James Wolfe DeKay himself and wife Abigail. Consulting "The DeKay Family in America" by Eckford James DeKay shows that my DeCays link to these Orange County, NY, DeCays - and the author was most kind to give me much assistance in researching the DeKay Family. I now seek cousins in the William Willet DeKay b. 1765 and Mary Armstrong line (progenitors of James Wolfe DeCay). Is anybody out there?

Bill Wereley

Dear Eckford,
Thank you for the reply. Could you tell me how to buy your book and also in what manner Michael DeKay and Moses Carpenter were related. I have no FIRM information regarding any relatives of Moses Carpenter. (I have seen the Carpenter Memorial, but none of the data given in the generation re. John Carpenter and Ruth Coe has been proven.) Just one proven relative for Moses Carpenter would be greatly appreciated.

The only data I have re. Moses Carpenter and Michael DeKay is s mortgage they, along with George Kerr or (Herr) give to George Luckey for property in the "Roughlands." I do not know if this was a business deal or if they had owned the property in common - (either by purchase or inheritance) unable to find a deed that would indicate who had owned the property sold to George Luckey.
Also unable to find out where the Roughlands were located.

Later I find a deed where Moses sells property to Wheelers that indicates he owed money on a mortgage to Christian Morris, Jacob Morris, and Sally Morris, ch. of Mrs. Jane Everit. This property had previously been owned by John Wisner, Sr., although I found no deed from him to the Morrises or Everits. Property was in Bog Meadow, commonly called "Lewsies or Servises" - or some such.
Witnesses were Absolon Townsend and Wm Thompson.
1771 Chauncey CT NY Guardianship book names Janes Morris, NYC widow of Jacob Sr. and Ch as above. Sureties: Absalon Townsend and Thomas Moore. (I have also Absolon Townsend m Hannah DeKay 1768 Warwick. Also that Michael DeKay is the brother of Jane DeKay, Morris, Everet.
(I find a note that Jacob Morris b. 1725 Rye NY wife was Judith Coe?)

I've hit a brick wall with Augustine Anderson b. abt. 1748 (NJ) married to Hannah Edsall. He served in the continental army and used his pension to relocated from NJ/NY to Morgan County Ohio.

He had 3 children Joseph, Matilda(m.Weston), Pamelia (married Silvey).

I can't find any info regarding Augustines birth, marriage, christening etc... I have no idea if he had any siblings nor any idea of whom is Parents were. I do have a suspicion that he might be Dutch.... and so posssibly the parents may be Andriesson's or Andrieze.

Some of the people involved may have been involved with the DeKay lines.

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Augustine truly can't have just fallen from the sky!!!

Re: Dekay, Hurd

Hello,

Regarding your brick wall: Your branch of the DeKay family is rich in its history. Consulting Eckford James deKay's very fine volume "The DeKay Family In America," I find Frances "Fanny" DeKay, b. 1815 -- d. after 1876, m. Elisha H. Hurd b. 1809, issue 6 sons and 1 daughter. Frances was the daughter of Elizabeth Christina (DeKay) Roe and Thomas "Mountain Man" DeKay; they were first cousins. Elizabeth Christina DeKay, b. 30 Jan 1789 Warwick NY, was the daughter of Mary DeKay b. 1758 Warwick NY and Joseph Roe, b. app 1755. Mary DeKay was the oldest daughter of Capt. Thomas DeKay, b. 26 Jul. 1731 NYC - d. 12 Feb. 1810 Orange Co. NY. He was the 3rd son and 5th child of Col. Thomas DeKay, the progenitor of the Thomas DeKay line. Thomas "Mountain Man" DeKay, b. 31 Oct. 1790 Vernon NJ d. 24 Jan. 1876 Lyndon NY, was the son of Nathaniel DeKay, b. 1760 d. 1814. Nathaniel was the son of Capt. Thomas DeKay and the brother of Mary DeKay, b. 1758 (see above). "Whew!" I hope I got all of that right. You *must* find out more about the family and acquire this very fine volume by emailing Eckford@aol.com. He helped me immensely in straightening out my twig of the DeKays, and is truly a top shelf scholar in the DeKay family and in Colonial History. He has posted this address and the invitation for queries regarding his volume on Rootsweb and Ancestry.com, so your inquiry will be welcome.

There are more family members listed, and the DeKay family has roots that go way, way back in time. I am always at billwereley@cfl.rr.com.

Regards....

Bill Wereley
Re: Book-The De Kay Family in America

Eckford...Many thanks for the book and the exhaustive report! It pinpointed our place in the DeKay family tree precisely - and more. The historic facts about the members of the family tree truly illuminate what had heretofore been a bewildering miasma of names, and their line of descent goes farther back than I'd ever dreamed. Moreover, after browsing through the book, I determined that I had assigned a couple to the wrong generation; the poor folks were propagating far into their seventies according to my scenario! Thanks again.

Richard Edward De Kay III, born 15 Sep 1885 HAstings, MN, died 1942 in ND. He was married in 1913 to Mildred Carrell, born 1887, died 1951 in Granville, ND. They had three sons and two daughters. I can give you their data if you need it. I can trace Richard De Kay's tree back to the early 1500's. Let me know what you need.
Eckford@aol.com

Hi, Phoebe:

I'm the author of "The De Kay Family in America" and am happy to help. John L. Carpenter married Edwy Adelia De Kay. The Edsalls and De Kays are related as you show, Richard having married Hillegonde (NOT Hildegarde!) in March 1730. Moses Carpenter (1750-1828) and Michael Duncan De Kay (1740-1816) were friends, but only very distantly related. I have no idea who Mr.Kerr was. Send me an e-mail as to how I can help.
I believe my husband's family is related. He is the g-grandson of Charlotte DeKay-Cowden. I believe Charlotte (b.1862) is the sister of Richard DeKay, daughter of Samuel DeKay and Amelia Barrie/Barry. I know she lived in Mt Clemens around the turn of the century. E-mail me at michwa61@yahoo.com if you want to share.
Michele
