Dekle - African American Decendents in Thomas Co., GA

I am looking for any decendents and family members of James Jeremiah Dekle (1868 - 1942). He was my great grandfather and only had one child with Ida Finley and that is my grandmother, Rosalie (Rosa Lee) Dekle. He lived in Blackshear, GA, which is in Thomas County. His parents were Jeremiah and Mary Dekle. They had seven children, including my great grandfather. He was the only boy that I know of. His sisters were Milley, Ann, Maryan, Katy, Caroline and Laura. In 1930 he did marry a younger woman named Maggie.

My information is from old Durden family historians. I've not followed up much with independant research.

The first known Durden (or Darden)to arrive on the continent from England was Stephan in 1640. He settled in Nansemond County VA. Stephen had at least two sons, John and Jacob.

Captain John Durden was born on his father's farm in 1710. He was an officer in the Colonial Army during the American revolutionary War. John had several children one being John Jr.

John Durden Jr. was born on Isle of Wight VA in 1734. He married Sara Coleman and like his father served in the Colonial Army. In 1784 John and Sara moved to the site now known as Norristown, GA. One of John and Sara's sons was William.

William married Sara Dekle. They moved to Emanual County GA where records show they acquired land there amounting to over 1,000 acres in 1805, 1815 and 1818. Their children were Dennis, Eleaser, William, Simeon, Ebenezer, Lucinda, Matida and Mary.

Eleaser, William and Simeon married three Barwick sisters - Polly, Elizebeth and Susan.

William and Elizebeth (my gg grandparents) are buried at the old Barwick Cemetery near Norristown and near their old home.

I have the census reports from 1850 to 1880 for the Barwick, Bryant, Coleman, Dekle, Durden, Roundtree & Sutton families if you are interested, also you can go to Rootsweb and see what I have on the Dekle, durden connection, look for something submitted by "tbrew"

Based on what I have, and your information, I suspect that the woman in the photo was the Allie Adams (born 1869). She was the daughter of William Miles Adams and Sarah Dekle.

Philip Massey's wife was Catherine Adams, the sister of William.

The picture you are inquiring of is of Irah Dekle and his new wife, Aldorette Irene Adams, taken on their wedding day, which I believe was December 24, 1895. I have one of the originals with the date on it. They were cousins and my great grandparents.

I would be interested in knowing the connection with the Philip Massey family.

Hi there. Not sure if you check this since it was posted 6 years ago and not sure if I have the same info you are tracking but doesn't hurt to try. My name is Frank Morris Dekle Jr. You said the boy in the photo was named Morris and his mother was named Sarah. My dad was born in GA and raised in FL. Sarah Lee was my grandmothers name but don't remember if my dad was in the boy scouts. She also would call my dad Morris so thats probly why it is the only name on the photo. My husband is descended from John Leonard and Sallie Grissom Dekle, through their son, William Grissom Dekle. William Grissom Dekle is my husband's 4th great grandfather.
The name William goes on down the family until my mother-in-law's father: William Kermit Dekle.

I will be glad to share info. that I have on the Dekle family.

Allie J. Dekle, Thomas County, Georgia

Attached is a photogragh of a young couple that I found in a album belonging to the Philip B. Massey family that lived in the Springhill area of Thomas County, near Boston, Ga.

Written on back of the photo is "Mrs. Allie J. Dekle". I do not know whether that is her or her husband's name. There were at least two men named Allison Dekle that lived in Thomas County.

Any ideas on who these people are?

William Durden/Elizabeth Barwick

In my book that I have titled "Dekle and Dekle Descendants of the USA" there is a William Durden married to Elizabeth Barwick listed. It shows William as the fourth child of Mary Dekle (b. 1784; d. 1855) and William Durden (b.1775; d. 1850). (Mary and William were married in 1800).

It says that William Durden, Sr. was the son of John Durden. John Durden was a solider of the Revolutionary War from North Carolina.

There are no dates listed for William Durden, Jr. nor Elizabeth Barwick.

Mary and William's children were (in order):
1. Dennis
2. Lucinda
3. Eleaser
4. William
5. Simeon
6. Ebenezer
7. Matilda
8. Mary

Mary's parents were John Leonard Dekle, Sr. (b. 1737; d. 1/8/1828) and Sallie Grissom (d. 1/25/1826)

I am looking for information on William Durden who was married to Elizabeth Barwick Durden. I have a picture of Elizabeth with her 11 children in front of her log home, which still stands.

I am trying to confirm that Williams father is John William who was born in 1734.If so, who was his father and what country did he come from.

Our branch of Dekle's is called Deakle. We are also part of the John Leonard Dekle line through a daughter Susannah. We believe her two sons (who went by Deakle) were born out of wedlock or that she was married to a close relative. I am from her son Andrew's line. Susannah married Charles Miller and lived in the Mobile, Alabama area. They had several children. Her brother, Charles Dekle/Deakle also lived there. Just wanted to share this with anyone who may be looking for Deakle.

i have a some dekle, nettles info in my roberts line from around lake bulter. have been trying to male a connection for a jane dekle shown in the 1860 or 1870 census for polk county in the home of william james roberts,(cherokee bill) she is also mentioned in his will. there was a james jameson there also. this was in and around polk city florida.

Julian Dekle

MACCLENNY-Julian Dekle, 91, of Macclenny, died Tuesday, January 13, 2004,
in the St. Vincents Medical Center in Jacksonville following a brief illness.
Born in Lake Butler, Mr. Dekle lived most of his life in Jacksonville. He and his
wife moved to Macclenny in 1978, where he has resided since. He was a civil
engineer at NAS Jacksonville until he retired. He was a member of the North View
Baptist Church in Jacksonville. He was also a member of the Lonic Lodge # 101
F&AM: Scottish Rite Lodge of Perfection, member of NARFE and Rodeo
Cowboys Assoc.
Mr. Dekle is survived by: two daughters, Mary Evelyn Hartley of Odum, Ga. and
Diane Davis of Macclenny; a brother Kirk Proctor Dekle of Sylvania, Ga.; seven
grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife
Alma Andrews Dekle.
Funeral services for Mr. Dekle were Jan. 17, 2004 in the chapel of Archer Funeral
Home of Lake Butler with the Rev. Joe Williams officiating with burial following in
Dekle Cemetery in Lake Butler.

LAKE CITY-Vivian Bielling Dekle, 73, of Lake City died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004
at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Allendale, S.C. following an
extended illness.
Born in Providence, Mrs. Dekle lived most of her life in Lake City where she
worked as a seamstress and was a homemaker. She was a member of the
Eastside Baptist Church of Lake City.
Mrs. Dekle is survived by: a daughter Annette All of Allendale; a son Robert
Sherwood Dekle of Lake City; two sisters, Gwendlyn Dekle of Lake City and
Seria Sandel of Havanna; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by her husband Robert Dekle.
Funeral services for Mrs. Dekle were Jan. 7, 2004 in Eastside Baptist Church
with Bob All officiating with burial following in Dekle Cemetery in Lake Butler
under the direction of Archer Funeral Home of Lake Butler.

I am researching "Jane Deecles", age 15, living with William & Celia Roberts Harris on the 1870 census of Polk County, FL...she is mentioned in the 1878 will of William Harris...for the 1880 census for Polk County, Jane Deecles, age 26, is living with Richard T. Caddin & his wife, Mary Harris Caddin...Mary Harris Caddin is the daughter of William & Celia Roberts Harris...Jane Deecles info states that she is born in Florida, father born in Georgia & mother born in Florida...this Harris family is on the 1850 census for Colleton County, South Carolina...after that they migrated to Florida...William Harris has Florida land patents in Columbia/Union for the years 1855, 1857, & 1859...i suspect that Jane's surname of Deecles/Deacles is a variation of "Dekles"...this Harris family is connected to the Costine & Roberts families - also of Colleton/Beaufort area of South Carolina - who also stopped in the Columbia/Union area of Florida before settling in Polk County, Florida...these families might have come to Florida through Georgia...would appreciate any clues/leads on this "Jane Deecles/Deacles/Dekles...

I am looking for any information on the family of DeRoy Dekle, of Register GA. He was my great-grandfather and, unfortunately, our family has little to no information on his extended family. He was born mid-late 1800's in Bullock (Bulloch) County GA, d. in 1958. His wife's name was Levietta (not sure of the spelling).

So what became of this William Grissom? I have never found a record of anyone in that time period named William Grissom or anyone searching for William Grissom. Sallie Grissom's grand daughter named a child William Grissom Carroll. Someone must have records on William Grissom of Georgia.

Donald Dekle

LAKE CITY-Donald James "Sonny" Dekle, 77, died Sunday, March 2, 2003, at
his residence following an extended illness.

Born in Lake Butler the son of the late John Ervin and Allie Andrews Dekle, Mr.
Dekle moved to Lake City in 1962. He served in the Marine Corps during World
War II and the Korean War. He retired from Southern Bell and the Florida
Department of Corrections. He was a member of Providence Village Baptist
Church and was past president of Columbia County Quarterback Club, member
of Lake Butler Masonic Lodge, the Morocco Temple, the Lion's Club and the
Telephone Pioneer's Association.

Mr. Dekle is survived by: two sons, Bob Dekle and Bill Dekle, both of Lake City;
a daughter Lucy Daniels of Lake City; three sisters, Frances Hanlon of Orange
Park, Jane Smith of Lake City and Ann Yarbrough of Fort Myers; a brother John
E. Dekle of LaBelle; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was
preceded in death by his wife Anne Coleman Dekle.

Funeral services for Mr. Dekle were March 5, 2003 in Providence Village Baptist
Church with the Rev. Bo Hammock officiating. Burial followed in Dekle Cemetery
in Lake Butler.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of North Central Florida, 4200
NW 90th Blvd., Gainesville, FL 32606.

I'm searching for information or descendants of Sara Virginia Dekle married to William M. Donaldson. Both are buried in Kettle Creek Cemetery, Ware Co., Ga. They had 8 children: Naomi (my grandmother), Joe, Benjamin, Dowse Bradwell, Abbie Dekle, James Hines, Mary, Thomas.
