Elizabeth DELAND d/o John DELAND & Judith UPHAM m. John STEVENS

I have a genealogy done in 1959 by Eleanor STEVENS on the ancestors of Charles Henry STEVENS.

In this genealogy, she shows the wife of John STEVENS b. 1764 Andover, MA d. ca 1838 s/o Jonathan STEVENS and Jemima RUSSELL to be married to Elizabeth DELAND d/o John DELAND and Judith UPHAM.

Since the the author of the genealogy is no long living, and I do not have access to her actual research, only the end result which is names, placed and dates, I have been comparing her handwritten information to gedcoms and sources that I can find on the internet to prepare the information to go into a genealogy database. The problem arises that ALL the information I find on the internet shows this particular John STEVENS was married to Elizabeth FRYE not Elizabeth DELAND. Of course, that definitely changes the face of this family dynamic, particularly since she has so many of Elizabeth DELAND's ancestors included.

I find on the internet John STEVENS b. 25 Aug 1764 Andover, MA s/o Jonathan STEVENS and Jemima RUSSELL as the husband of Elizabeth FRYE, but no information about Elizabeth FRYE herself other than a dob of ca 1765.

The John STEVENS everyone has married to Elizabeth DELAND shows up as John STEVENS b. ca 1767 Braintree, Norfolk, MA s/o Peletiah STEVENS and Hannah HAYWARD. *NOTE - The source of this information is: Genealogies of the Families Of Braintree, Norfolk, Mass., 1640-1850 by Waldo Chamberlain Sprague.

There are three ways to think about this:
1. Her research is WRONG.
2. Her research is RIGHT and everyone else is WRONG.
3. Elizabeth FRYE and Elizabeth DELAND are the same person, perhaps via another marriage.

Since I am not a DELAND researcher, can anyone give me any more sources to prove which John STEVENS Elizabeth DELAND actually married?

Any insight would be much appreciated.
Regards,
JC Henry

thank you for your message, the sole ancestor to the Deland, Deslandes Champigny families who have originated from Quebec province, was Jean Deslandes dit Champigny. He arrived in Quebec in 1685, and was originally from Champigny sur Marne, in the Isle de France region of France, now the department of Val de Marne. Your Philippe Deslandes, Claude Deslandes tells me was a french huguenot who came to America from Holland, therefor not likely to be kin to our Jean, not even from a lateral branch, ( unless his forebears came from Champigny sur Marne) since Deslandes is (or was) not an unusual surname and itbecause it has a geographical reference, ie landes = marshes.
but it is nice to know our american neighbors still care about a french background however remote, Our Jean Deslandes has many descendants in the USA, mostly in or from NewEngland and most of them Champignys or variations thereoff
regards Laurette Champigny

I have been trying to do some geneology on my grandparents. My grandmother was Olive B. Deland and was married to Frank Gould Deland. They were both from Worcester, MA where my father, Donald Leslie Deland was born. What was Ruth's married name? It seems that we remember my grandmother visiting a "Ruth" during her summers. Please reply.

Help! here is what little I know: Grandfather - John Evan DeLand born around 1894. Lived for some time in Nebraska and married there. He had one sister and a number of brothers. Great-grandfather is Amos DeLand, we believe from the N.E. of USA, possibly NY. He was a drummer boy in the Civil War for the North. He was married to Frances McDermott (we think). Thank you for any help.

I am a descendant of the Deland family in Salem. I have a book titled " The Deland Family in America" They are all descendants of Phillip Deslandes as mentioned in the book. My branch is descended from Phillip's son Benjamin. I can't remember the other son's names, as the book is not at hand right now. Some of the family went to Florida and settled the town Daland and started a school there. My family stayed in the North East from Mass. to NJ where my great grand parents lived.
Joyce

Rob,
I have a book titled "Deland Family in America" It mentions Phillip Deslandes from France who settled in Massachusetts in or about 1620. I'm not sure how many sons he had as the book is not at hand right now. I do know that I am a descendent from his one son Benjamin. My mother who was born in 1907 is listed in the book.
Joyce

Hi Joyce,
I have been working on the genealogy of Deslandes and Deland families originating from Quebec since 20 years.
It is clear that most of the Deland living in the USA have Phillip Deslandes who arrived in Massachusetts in the early 1600's
but I am quite certain that some of them are descending of french-americans Deland who migrated in the early 1800's.
Augustin Deland and Catherine Hébert's family which left Quebec around 1840.
Maybe your grand-parents will fit better into this Deland branch.

Claude Deslandes

Dear Rob,

I'd like to answer your e-mail concerning Laurette Champigny's query.I was wondering if you were aware of some Deland families that you were unable to link to the Phillip Deslandes of Salem, who I think, is the first ancestor of most of the DeLand in the United States. These unrelated families might be some french-canadian emigrants who left the province of Quebec in the mid-1800's, and changed their surname of Deslandes to Deland, because of the english pronunciation?

The french text of Mrs Champigny is an invitation to all Deslandes-Champigny and Deland descending of the french soldier Jean Deslandes. It might concern many american families.

Thank you, Claude Deslandes
