I have a "Pinakney" Delay, son of Alexander Delay and Rachel Carroll in my personal genealogy records. He was born 1836 in Greene County, Indiana. I believe this information came from my grandmother and the spelling of his name could be incorrect. I am very interested in the names you saw at the cemetary. I've been looking for children of David Delay and Mary Garrett. David is also a son of Alexander and Rachel. David and Mary had 9 children, but I believe 6 died before adulthood. Did you happen to see any names related to them?

I am a Delay. It is curious that my brother-in-law has a cousin from Ireland, living in County Cork on Fota Island whose name is Delea. She is Irish, and was very interested to know of the spelling of my Irish last name, and where my Delay ancestors came from, being County Cork. My Delay ancestors were stonemasons for the most part.
I am curious about the ancient origin of the name.

Hello Delays

My grandmother is Ruth Delay of Indiana, circa late 1800s who married Walker Farmer. I don't really know much about her, but I was taken by a 4th cousin during a visit to Indiana in 2006 to a cemetary located in a cornfield near Sanborn, Indiana. It turned out it was a Delay family cemetary. Has anyone ever heard of Pinkey Delay? I videotaped everything and I am going to review the tape to see what names I recorded, but I just happened to find this forum and hope that maybe I can learn more about my father's mother's line.

Retired truck driver lived up to his word
John Delay, 89 FLINT TOWNSHIP THE FLINT JOURNAL FIRST EDITION Thursday, January 17, 2008 By Kristyn Peterson kpeterson@flintjournal.com • 810.766.6315
FLINT TWP - John Delay believed that a man's word is his honor.

The oldest of 14 children, Delay was a proud man, said his son, Robert Delay, 61, of Swartz Creek.

He was proud of his military service in World War II, and he was proud of being a third-degree Mason. He was especially proud of his family, said his son, Mark Delay, 58, of Flint.

"He loved his family dearly," Mark Delay said. "He would drop whatever he was doing because he loved his full family so much."

His dad also was always ready to help anyone, said another son, John Delay, 63, of Port Huron.

The elder Delay, 89, died Jan. 12 at Genesys Hospice Care Center.

The younger John Delay said he remembers being on a boat with his father, uncle and cousin as a boy. His cousin decided he was going to swim to shore but, within a few strokes, began to drown. His father and uncle both jumped off the boat to save his cousin, the younger John Delay said.

In the process, though, the two knocked him out of the boat and into water about eight feet deep, he said.

"I couldn't swim, either, and they didn't notice I was gone," the younger John Delay said. "Somehow, I had the peace of mind to sink to the bottom, walk a few steps, kick up and take a breath. ... I made it all the way back to shore that way.

"That's the kind of guy he was, though. He was always there to help someone. He wanted to help my cousin and, in the process, knocked me out of the boat."

Son Chris Delay, 45, of Ovid called his father a warrior.

"He was straight-forward," Chris Delay said. "He would tell you the truth even if you didn't want to hear it."

When his sons were younger, Delay liked to take them on road trips, Mark Delay said. Because his father was a truck driver, the family often made it to their destination quickly.

"He drove nonstop," Mark Delay said. "I remember, on a trip out West, we made it from Flint to San Francisco in less than three days."

Delay was a member of Teamsters Local 332 and an Elf Khurafeh Shriner. He worked as an electrician and a mechanic in the construction industry. He was working for Garrison's Hardware when he retired.

In addition to his sons, Delay leaves his wife, Betty; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
James Delay - Ireland > North Carolina

I'm working on a James Delay, born about 1747 in Ireland. On 30 March 1765 in Rockingham Co., NC; he was ordered to report to Orphants Court, where a John Harris was ordered to take James into his care and custody. I find no indication that James reported to such.
He married in 1768 to a Deliah Unknown and in 1770 had a son Burgess, followed by; Judy, James, Giles and two daughters of unknown names.
He was a Lt. during the American Revolution, and settled after the war in Rockingham Co., NC.
I'd be very interested in anyone working on the NC Delays, that might have a clue where in Ireland he came from, or who his parents were.
Thanks for any assists or direction.
Gayle

DeLay -- Fitchburg, MA

Jim,
By any chance is there a Daniel DeLay in that family you are looking for? I'm trying to track down a Daniel DeLay and his wife Agnes Robertson (she is of my Robertson line). Don't know a thing about him, other than both he and his wife worked in woolen mills, and travelled to find work. His wife Agnes was born in 1866 in NY, but I do know they lived in Fitchburg at one time, also in Providence, RI and in Connecticut. They went where the work was to be found. I have a couple of letters from the early 1920's that show they were in CT at that time, but then have no clue after that. Is this Dan of your family?

You will find Emma and John Q. Owens, being with my grandfather as she married him, John Boman Cannaday and they were living in Ark, in Washington Co. and Emma was born in 1876 John B. Cannaday had a daughter Gertie Cannaday as her mother passed away, and this is the 1910 Census, of Cincinnatti ? Village, I do have an marriage on Frank and Emma, and I have a marriage of John Boman Cannaday and Mary Kathleen Kirkpatrick, but I noticed that Emma and my Grandfather was married for 10yr's so that would mean that they were married in 1900, also that is where I had gotten the marriages of John B. and Kirkpatrick and Emma and Frank, Strange huh !!
Dianna

Delay From County Cork

Hi, Josephine. My wife and I were in Dunmanway, Cork in September looking for her ancestor, Ellen Delay, born Co. Cork abt 1832, daughter of Patrick and Ann Cronin. Ellen emigrated to USA about 1840. Settled in Buffalo, NY, m. Michael Burns (Byrne) of Wicklow, raised a large family, died in 1902. If anything sounds familiar, please contact us. Also I have a list of about 34 Delays from Cork in Griffiths Valuation. So far I haven't located Ellen's townland but I'm in touch with a Cork genealogist. Tom.

According to the Hampshire County, Va. estate settlements, James Delay name was Dela arza, or Dillarza, or Deloza. My ggg grand mother Hannah Delay Hole, wife of Zachariah Hole was proven by law as an hier of James Delat. Also her sister Sarah was proven an heir of James Delay who left no will. I believe James Delay came from Pa. with his wife Mary Moore to Hampshire, land surveyed in 1761.
Re: James DeLay Born abt.1724 VA?

I also traced my lineage to James Delay through his dughter Hannah Delay Hole, wife of Zachariah Hole. While
researching West Virginia Estate Settlements, I found the court used the names James Dillarza/Dillia. They also said that Hannah Deloza wife of Zachariah Hole, and Sarah Deloza were the only surviviing heirs of James. Also the west Virginia Estate Settlements for Hampshire Counnty had three entries. Delloyzeas, Edw. furnishwd a bond, 10-09-1763, Delloyzeas, Jas. App. 12-13-1763. Then on 09-13-1786 Delloyzeas Jas. Adm. On 05-August 1779 a Deed issued to Hannah Hole, Sarah Dellarza, and Mary Stephens former wife of james Delarsa. John Deloza and Mary McCarty appeared as witnesses. I believe that James Delay, Edward Delloyzwas, John Deloza are members of Daniel Delozier (1685-1776) family of Prince George's and Charles County. The unusual spelling of Delozier resulted in varius spelling of Delay/Delia/Dillarza/Deloza/Dilloyzeas. I guess we we have to do more reseach in Charles County, Maryland

My opinion after looking at several items form the West Virginia Estate Settlements is that James Delay (1724-1753) is related, perhaps a son of Daniel Delozier (born 1685 in France, died 1676 in Charles County, Md, and Mary Brawner. He also had brothers John and Edward helped with his Estate Settlement. The names Dellarzaa, Deloza and Delloyzeas were used during this time. I have not found proof, but it appears so, If anybody has anything to add let me know.
