Beverly was my mother-in-law. She passed away several years ago. Martha is still living in the Syracuse area and has 2 daughters. We were just there this weekend are her youngest daughter's wedding. Unfortunately, Martha does not have email. She would love corresponding with her cousins. We live in Indiana. Martha talked about time she used to visit her grandfather in Canada and there were relation (I think cousins)that would play the fiddle and spoons. Do you recall any of this?

I know you are in the midwest ???Where exactly ?I am not communicating from my computer . I am retired (12 years now from teaching) but I have a parttime job at a funeral home in Ottawa .I'm working here til 10 tonight .I will be travelling to my timeshare in Virginia in November between the 11th and 22nd.
What specifically are you looking for re: history of the Delisle family???????????

I am married to Ralph's grandson. Ralph married Vivien LaCombe and they had 2 daughters. My husband's mother (the oldest daughter) passed away a few years ago. His aunt lives in upstate NY. She spoke a few times of visit her cousins in Canada when she was little. These cousins were musicians and must have played at family gatherings. Does any of this sound familiar to you?

Thank you so much Clodagh for your reply. Since I posted this request I have made more progress on the De Lisle's, although haven't found any connection with the Channel Is. We have made contact with a descendant in NZ who has also done quite a bit of research on the family. And just recently I recieved an email from other descendants in Canada.
I am not a de Lisle, but have been doing this research for a friend in Hobart, Tasmania.
I will be in touch with you by email
Thanks again
Kathy Noble

Re: De Lisle, Dublin, England

Hi Kathy;

Francis de Lisle is my great-great grandfather. My great-grandmother is Mary Jane de Lisle. She was born in Dublin May 10th 1854.
On April 16th 1884, she married my great-grandfather Ernest Hancock Nunns in St. Peter's Parish Church, Aungier Street, Dublin. I have a copy of the marriage certificate. It states that her father, Francis de Lisle was a land agent. But in those days, solicitors performed a number of functions. We had also heard that he was a solicitor.
We have just started to research the de Lisles and did not know that Mary Jane had so many siblings. Mary Jane died in 1955 in Victoria B.C. Canada. Ernest and she retired to Cumberland B.C Canada in 1923 because both of their sons lived in the area.
My mother, Anna Mary Daphne de Lisle Nunns ( married name O'Grady ) died in 1977 but her cousin Mary has given me some family records but, except for that marriage certificate, they are all Nunns records etc.
My grandfather, who was eventually an Archdeacon in the Church of England was named Arthur Ernest de Lisle Nunns and one of my sons is James Alexander de Lisle Lefevre. So the name lives on in our family but I don't know for how much longer, the younger generation does not understand the significance of family names.
Are you also a de Lisle?
You certainly have a wealth of information but I can see that you also have some mysteries to solve.
Oh and by the way, the witnesses on the marriage certificate are Vincent de Lisle and Dora G de Lisle
I bet that Vincent was her brother and Dora either her sister or Vincent's wife. If you wish to reply please use my e-mail, clodaghogrady@hotmail.com since I am not presently a member of ancestry.
Perhaps we can share info that we find although I am not working on the de Lisles very much at present.

Bye for now, Clodagh Lefevre.

Alexis Delisle - Witness to JB St. Francois Marriage

Hello Everyone...

I have hit a brick wall and have been going round and round for the past year with no luck (ugh!). So, I thought I would try a different angle and see if someone on the message board might be able to help. I will try not to be too confusing... I will have to do a little history beforehand, though. I am sorry for the length but I wanted to make sure I put all the information out there that I could.

The ancestor I am looking for is CHARLES MADOX and whom he may have married. Charles is the father of PELAGIE MADOX.

==================
Part One.....
Pelagie Madox married Jean Baptiste St. Francois 18 April 1803 at Detroit, L'Assomption de Sandwich de Windsor (Douin Records). She was JB's 2nd wife. The marriage record states that Pelagie was the "natural" daughter of Charles Madox and that Charles was a "Convert." I also know from Charles' burial record that he was a meat caterer/trader "at the post."

Witnesses for the Groom: Jean Baptiste Leduc, Dominic Leduc, Andrew Peltier, Joseph Amable Bigras, Francis Champagne and Pierre Giroux.

Witnesses for the Bride: Jean Baptiste Ouellette, Charles Ouellette, Alexander Ouellette, ALEXIS DELISLE and Henry Blondin.

==================
Part Two:.....
Jean Baptiste St. Francois' 1st wife was Genevieve Cloutier, daughter of Zacharie Cloutier and Marie Josephe of the Sauteaux Nation. I do not know if they had any children before she died.

Witnesses for the Groom: Jean Baptiste Leduc, Andre Peltier and Marie Josephe Peltier, wife of Jean Baptiste Pare.

Witnesses for the Bride: Charles Spinard (?), Andre Goupille, Claude Reaume and Jean Baptiste Pare.
==================

Elisabeth Peltier was the Godmother of JB and Pelagie's son, Jean Baptiste St. Francois

Jean Baptiste Leduc was the Godfather of JB and Pelagie's daughter, Pelagie St. Francois

Jean Baptiste Proux was Godfather and VICTOIRE OUELLETTE was the Godmother of JB and Pelagie's daughter, Louisa

I have found several of the surnames of the witnesses and godparents mentioned on the Delisle Board.

==================

I am wondering if Charles being a "Convert" was married to an Indian woman and I have not a clue how to go about researching. Another question is where did he do his trading (he died about 1788)? Where would I find records for "traders?"

Also, Pelagie is mentioned as the "natural" daughter of Charles so was her mother Indian??? Again, I am lost and do not know where to begin researching. This is all new territory for me...

Did Pelagie choose the witnesses to her marriage because they were family members? I don't know anything about how witnesses were chosen.

Another thing to add to the confusion (sorry) is that all of the St. Francois family were killed on 2 Oct 1813 except for Pelagie (mother) and daughter Scholastique (my ancestor). According to Fr. Christian Denissen, "Genealogy of the French Families of the Detroit River Region 1701-1936," the family were "scalped by the Indians." I don't speak or read French so I had the burial records translated and nowhere does Fr. Gabriel Richard state they were "scalped." Does anyone know if there are more records out there that would indicate they were scalped?????

I do not know if Pelagie remarried or where she went after her family's deaths. I could never find any records if she remarried. I have Scholastica in the Monroe, Michigan 1850 Census married and have had no trouble tracing her down to myself.

Sorry for the lengthy and confusing post. I know I have lots of questions and like I said, I have hit a brick wall.

Anything, and I mean anything, you can suggest would be wonderful to me.

Thank you!!!
De Lisle, Dublin, England

Greetings from Tasmania, Australia

I am wondering if anyone can help with with any information or links with the de Lisle family in Dublin, Ireland.

It is thought that there is a family connection with Dr Irving de Lisle (I presume this is Dr Frederick Irving de Lisle, born Guernsey 1846) who went to NZ, and also de Lisle Bros, Monterey, Canada. A Canadian line has connections with the Channel Islands and we have a tree showing the lineage from Sir John de Lisle (Governor) to Pierre de Lisle. But I am not sure of the connection with them and the Australian or the Irish de Lisle's.

Here is the Dublin family I am interested in:

Francis de Lisle
(born ~ 1811) married Elizabeth Higgins in Booterstown, South Dublin in 1837. They had 14? children – 10 sons and 4 daughters, all born in Dublin. They lived in St Marys Road, Dublin. Francis was a solicitor. I don't know where Francis was born, or who his parents were or where they came from.
The sons were all educated at Dublin University. 2 daughters married Church of England Ministers – one married the Rev. Nunn and they lived at Kilmanington Rectory, the other sister married the Reverend Barton and went to live at Hove, England. Sam and Fred were Doctors, Edwin worked for Patterson, Laing and Bruce in London.

One son emigrated to Australia in 1856, Alfred de Lisle, (born Dublin ~1839) and he married Ann Maria Clarke in 1861 in Melbourne. Descendants in Australia.

Samuel Ernest de Lisle, born Dublin ~ 1853, was Superintendent of Three Counties Asylum, Bedfordshire for 29 yrs, died 1935 at Hove

Edwin de Lisle, born Dublin ~ 1847 was Buyer for Merchants, married Mary Jane Wingate in 1870, Hackney. 1901 living in Hampstead, 1933 retired at Hove, died 1936/1937.

Buried at Mt Jerome, Dublin:
Francis De Lisle died 2/1/1897 aged 85 years - 55 Lower Baggot St. Eliza De Lisle died 4/2/1892 aged 88 years of 107 Dorset St. (is this his wife? or sister?)
Vincent de Lisle born 4th July 1841, died 27 MArch 1896 aged 55 also of 55 Lower Baggot Street, Dublin.
Florence Elizabeth De Lisle born 25 Nov 1864, died 22/1/1887 aged 22 years - 35 Marys Road Dublin
Susan De Lisle died 22/4/1884 aged 78 yrs, 18 Lower Dorset St. (was she Francis' sister?)

If anyone can shed any light on this family and any connections with the English or Channel Island de Lisle's I would be most grateful.
In particular, is there any record of a birth in either the Channel Islands or England for

Francis de Lisle, born ~ 1811
Eliza de Lisle, born ~ 1804
Susan de Lisle born ~ 1806

Many thanks
Kathy Noble
Hello Melissa,

I am sorry to hear about your grandfather's passing. My mother-in-law passed away this past December. She was your grandfather's niece. My husband would be Ralph's (or Raoul - his birth name)grandson..Rolland's great nephew.

I have been unable to trace our Delisle ancestors. It seems while Delisle is a common name (especially in the north) none of the people I find are related to me. was your grand mather's name Rita by chance? I am just trying to make sure I have the correct Rolland.

I would love to contact your father is he is open to it. Does he have a computer and email address? Please ask him if he would be willing to share any family names and dates. I have been looking for several years and cannot connect all the dots.

Thank you much for taking the time to respond to me.

Jennifer Congdon

I am looking for more info on Edouard Delisle, who married Mary Ness. Unfortunately I don't have more info yet on the Ness side, but I am wondering if you know more about Edouard? Birthplace/year? Who his parents were? Thanks!

you had asked about Bernard J. DeLisle that was married......I checked at the Monroe Co. Court house and show no marriage record on him, I searched from 1990 and up, was it an earlier date? If so, let me know and I will search again.
