Death of Mrs. Mary Dellis

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 29 January 1892 ...

Mrs. Mary Dellis, wife of Uncle Johnie Dellis, died Monday night with pneumonia, having been sick only a few days. She was a noble and good woman, being a zealous member of the Methodist Church which she joined when quite young. She leaves several daughters to mourn her loss. Her remains were interred in the cemetery here, followed by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends, her husband, uncle Johnie, who has raised a large family of children, all being noted for their up-rightness which traits are characteristic of the old gentleman, is also lying very low with pneumonia and his recovery is considered doubtful in spite of all the close nursing and skillful treatment of his physicians, Drs. Still and Watkins. Kemp Herald
William Pleasant Dellis

This is in response to a message posted by Bruce Dellis. I don't have much information about William Pleasant Dellis, but I think I may have a common ancestor. My great-great grandfather was named Pleasant Dellis and he lived in Mississippi around the same time as your Dellis. Pleasant Dellis was born in Tennessee in 1827 and died in Lee County, MS in 1878. His daughter, Willie Tennessee Dellis, married Stephen M. Francis in Itawamba County, MS and moved to Collin County, TX around 1890.

Until two years ago I lived in Tempe, AZ and met someone named Dellis who lived on my street (Fairmont Drive). I think his grandfather was William Pleasant Dellis who ended up in Texas. Does this sound like the same person?

I think that since my great-great grandfather's name was Pleasant and that he lived in Mississippi might mean that he was related to your William Pleasant Dellis. I would like to exchange e-mails and see if we can find a link there.

For anyone interested, I am trying to learn about the men of the 24th Texas Cavalry Co H. Did this man survive the war, as few of the 24th did, and if not what battle or prison did he die in? Did he leave family behind?
