Hi,
I'm the grandson of a Maud Delve, daughter of a James Delve , son of a James Delve ( born about 1852) and I think the son of William Delve born about 1817 in the Barnstaple area. The Jameses however came to Mumbles in Swansea in the 1850s and it became very confusing at one point because of the preponderance of Jameses - I am named Gilbert James after my great uncle Gilbert James Delve...but as I say that first JamesDelve emerges in the 1850s, the name continues to his son, my great uncle, my father, me and my son-e and grandson.

In the 1851 census they have the name as Delre, but if you look on the actual page it is Delve. This is James & Elizabeth and their children.

Joan

Hi Joan,

I have a James Delve who is the father of Thomas and William. He was born c1810 but I have found that James is a name that carries through the family. It is possible that your james and mine were cousins but I havent got quite that far yet as the earlier records are very sketchy. My branch seem to have been scattered around the Swimbridge/crediton/Tawstock areas. Thanks for replying to my message, If you find a connection before me, please will you let me know. I will do the same.

Hello I am the great great granddaughter of William and Susanna Delve of Marwood, Devon. As a child I lived in Marwood at Prixford and now live at Braunton about 3 miles away. My grandmother was Annie Turner Harris maiden name Brown. Her mother was also called Annie Turner and was the daughter of William (George`s brother )and Harriet Delve of Marwood. William was the son of William and Susanna Delve. William senior was born in the village of Landkey outside Barnstaple in about 1801. He is buried at Marwood Parish church close to the belfry door.He lived until he was 91 at Kingsheanton a small hamlet in Marwood. My grandmother knew him and the Delves but the family had fallen out badly as her mother ,his granddaughter had died the day she was born in childbirth and there was a family row about who was to bring up the children. I have various children in my research for William and Susanna -.William,Maria,James,George,Susan.For George and Ann I have Eliza,George,Anne.Ellen,Rosa,John,Lucy,Jane,Emma,
G.Thirza,
Ihope this is helpful. The Delve family was a very large family here in the 18th century. My father knew Jane Delve (Emma`s sister) who never married and kept a small sweet shop in her cottage in the 1920s.He called her aunt Jane. My father and mother remember cousins of his mother that he went to Marwood school with in the 1920`s called Webber their mother had been a Delve one of George`s children

Hello I am also tracing the Delve side of my family. I am the great great grandaughter of William and Harriet Delve of Marwood Devon. Harriet's maiden name was Turner and she had a sister Ann Turner( we have an old prayer book that belonged to Ann). I believe that Harriet was born in Landkey, near Barnstaple. I am descended from her daughter Annie Turner Delve who married James Delve. I know a little about the family and would be pleased to share any information that I have. I only knew about three of the children, Mary the dressmaker, Fred the tailor and my grandmother Annie Turner Delve. I have found them on the 1881 census living at Ashford near Barnstple.

They came from Bowr and Exeter in Devon and were born in the early 1820's.

Does anyone recognize these people?

For: Gwen Bond & Christine Watts

Hello to you both,

I have been researching the Adams Family Tree and have traced roots (mostly in North Devon) back to late 1600s.

I note that on the Marriage Register for St. Rumon's at Romansleigh the following entry appears:
John Adams (sojourner) married Jane Delve (of Romansleigh) on 3 Aug 1797. Signatory witnesses: Joseph Featherington & William Selley (the latter probably the verger).

Does Jane Delve fit into your Family Tree? Would be very interested to hear, if so.

Regards, Reg

I was lucky to be born into the Delve Family and carry that surname for 26 years but, I am ashamed to admit that I took my heritage for granted. However, since the untimely death of my father, Robert (Bob) Delve, I have been encouraged to trace my ancestry. My Grandfather was Frederick Delve, born in Oystermouth on 28 March 1899, his father, David Delve was, I believe, born in 1861 at Ilston, Glamorgan and his grandfather, Thomas Delve originated from Swinbridge, Devon approx 1836.I would love to hear from anyone with any information relating to David or Thomas, or their respective wifes, children and siblings.

Hi - Could be a match - I have a William Delve married to Harriet Turner, living in Marwood. I have only three children but as these are derived from the census your Henry could be a missing child. If so, his children's names are the same as his brothers and sisters, further strengthening the link.

E-mail me please on dbeecham@onyxgroup.co.uk to exchange setails

I am descended from William's sister Maria

Diane

Hello Cousin

I have very little on your line - only info fron the census with William and Harriet having Mary J (Abt 1860) and Fred (Abt 1867). I would be interested in getting a detailed family lineage.

We may be doubly related as Maria Delve (daughter of William Snr and Susanna) maried William Harris (son of Hugh Harris) in Marwood on 25 March 1848 so I would also be interested in how your grandmother became Annie Turner Harris.

Email me on dbeecham@onyxgroup.co.uk so we can swap info.

Diane

Nope, I'm still stuck in the same spot with my Delve line as was posted.
I have been having trouble finding where my great grandma Emma Delve married my great grandpa John N Patt there in Devon, UK.
John and Emma Delve Patt's oldest child was born, Emma Delve was born in the Barnstaple area in 1883. They also had a son named William Delve, younger than dau Emma Delve. For some reason, John Patt and Emma Delve weren't married when these two were born...and these two oldest children were left in Barnstaple to be raised by Emma Delves parents, George & Ann Ridd Delve when John Patt & Emma Delve came to America in about 1892.
I also haven't been able to find where George Delve and Ann Ridd Delve died.
I did find through old census records that George Delve had a sister Mary Delve born in 1826 and a sister Susan born about 1839, both in Marwood, Devon, UK.
Please contact me offlist at my email addy:Rani2037@aol.com

tracing my family

As a bona fide Delve ;), I am trying to find out some information about my family,
I was recently at the funeral of my paternal Grandmother, Alice Delve, who died on August 25th aged 94. She was married to Reginald Delve who was born in 1907 and died in 1992, aged 85. Reg would never talk about his family, but we do know that he had 2 sisters and was born in Edinburgh (we don't know if they were on holiday, or if they lived there) and his father was a dentist, who may have come from Devon (possibly Bovey Tracey). He may have been born with the surname Delves.
does anyone know anything of this branch of the family, or know where I can get more information? Any help would be appreciated.

Delve Interests

Hi,

My own Delve line starts in Morchard Bishop in Devon, England. There were several Delve families in the village from at least 1660 (From when Parish Records are available.)

There are several descendants of Morchard Bishop Delves with on-line information.

My own line starts with a John Delve, born about 1750.

John's grandson, Richard Delve, born in Morchard in 1784 moved onto Lapford. His son Richard and his wife Mary (Richards) were founder members of the Congregational Chapel there.

From there my live continues through Richard's son David, born in Lapford in 1844 and his son Frederick William, born in Ilfracombe in 1868.

About 1900 Fred and his wife Hettie and other members of her family migrated to Hyde, Cheshire. Their youngest daughter (of six children), Gertrude, is my grandmother.

More details are on my website.

Cheers,
Mike Brierley
