Demers of Manchester, NH and Vermont

Hi, I have hit a brickwall. My great grandfather was Cleo Demers, b. about 1900 in Manchester, NH. Her married Dorothy Sutton from Derry, NH. His siblings were Napoleon Alexander, Alice L, Walter Henry, Leon, Lyddie, Clarence, Clara, and Belmer O. Demers jr. Their parents were Mahala Lavigne b. abt 1872 in (Waterloo?) Quebec D. in Manchester, NH 15 June 1940, and Belmer O. Demers, b. in Glover Vermont in 1857 d. Nov 1927. Belmer had a marriage prior to Mahala. Belmer's obit. states that Belmer was a resident of Manchester for over 60 years. So, he must have moved to Manchester prior to 1870. It also states he had 2 sisters, Alice Bartin or Barton, VT and Olive Nord of (Irishburg?) Vermont.

Belmer was a loom fixer and his obit says he worked at the Amoskeag Mills for 52 years.
I can find Belmer and Mahala in the 1900-1920 censuses. I can also find Belmer in the Manchester city directories for the late 1890's but I can't find him at all before that. Variations of his name on his children's vitals was also Elmer and Velmer. Also on his obit they name his widow as "Ada M. Demers" although I know he was still married to Mahala. I do not know his former wife's name.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Leah

I did, I checked every page in the registers frm 1750 to 1815 for that parish. There is two distinct people who are sisters and one lived from 1771 to 1796 and Magdeleine from 1776 through at least 1795 with the birth of a child.

You may want to check the church records again to determine if the child born in 1771 died before the birth of the second child. Quite frequently a second child will be given the dead child's name.

this is to try to clarify what I need. the following is what I have for the 4 generations from Charles Demers to Edouard Demers and have had for many years. Recently I have been able to locate the Birth, Death, and Marriage records which show a distinct disconnect between the two Andre Demers. Edouard's parents from birth and marriage record are Andre Demers and Marie Catherine Marot not as indicated below. Hence the disconnect from the records. I have found everything as far as records except the marriage record between Andre Demers and Marie Catherine Marot. Marie Catherine and Marie Magdeleine marot are sisters by birth records.

Here is what I currently have:

1 Charles Demers-1. Baptism on 17 Sep 1737 in St-Nicolas, Québec. He was born on 17 Sep 1737 in St. Nicolas, Levis, Quebec, Canada. He died Aft. 1789 in St Antoine de Tilley, Lotbiniere, Quebec, Canada

1a Catherine-Genevieve Gagnon is the daughter of Pierre Gagnon and Catherin Cloutier. She was born on 01 Mar 1740 in St. Nicolas, Levis, Quebec, Canada. Baptism on 03 Mar 1740 in St-Nicolas, Québec. She died on 09 Nov 1817 in St Antoine de Tilley, Lotbiniere, Quebec, Canada. Burial on 12 Nov 1817 in St Antoine de Tilley, Lotbiniere, Quebec, Canada

Charles Demers and Catherine-Genevieve Gagnon.
Need help to resolve a conflict in my Demers family line

I have had my family tree pretty well defined, but recently I discovered a conflict and have not been able to find a resolution to it.

I goes from 1 Edouard Demers/MDA Martineau M 1851 father mother on marriage certificate

2 Andre Demers/Marguerite Bouche M 1811 Andre's father and mother is identified on his birth and marriage record to

3 Andre Demers/Marie Catherine Marot (could not locate marriage record) However, many genealogical resources have the parents of 2 Andre as 3A Andre Demers/Marie Madeleine Marot M 1789.

The next generation is identified as
Charles Demers/Catherine Genevieve Gagnon M 1758
They were identified as the parents for 3A Andre Demers' marriage record

I need to find the marriage record for 2 Andre Demers and Catherine Marot. Marie Catherine Marot and Marie Magdeleine Marot are sisters by their birth records. Catherine lived from 1771 to 1796. 3 Andre Demers' death record only identifies that he was the widow of Marie Marot which did not solve the problem.

I could not find any other Andre Demers's death in that time frame to suggest a marriage record to Catherine Marot.

Charles was married in St Nicolas, Andre, Andre, and Edouard and their wives are all from St Antoine de Tilley, Lotbiniere, PQ, Canada.

If anyone can help to resolve this conflict, please let me know or if you have a marriage record for 3 Andre and Catherine would tie it all together

If you need more information, please contact me.

Thaks,
Don Demers

Abt 1845, (daughter of Jean-Baptiste Deguire and Luce Cournoyer). Frederick died 7 Feb 1908, Rice Lake, Barron, WI, USA.

Story in "History of aroon Co. Wisconsin". Moved to Rice Lake in 1881. Frederick I. Demers, farmer, merchant and public official for many years in Rice Lake, now deceased, exerted a real influence on the life of the county, and left behind the memory of an honest, upright and useful life. He did his duty as he saw it in business, in public affairs and in his family, and was held in high esteem. He was a native of Canada, born in Quebec, Nov. 17, 1845, the son of McGuire and Margaret (Dauplaise) Demers, both of Canadian birth, but of ancient French lineage. The father, who was a mason by trade, died in 1881, after which the mother came to Rice Lake, took up her home with her son, Frederick I., and died March 31, 1914, at the age of ninety-seven years. The subject of this sketch as a boy attended the Canadian public schools. He began his mercantile career at the age of fourteen, when he started clerking in a store at Sorel, Province of Quebec, Canada. After some years of this, he engaged in the mercantile and cordwood business for himself in the same place. In 1870 he came to the States, bringing his family, and locating at Menomonie, Dunn County, Wis. It was in 1871 that he came to Barron County, and took a homestead of 160 acres in section 24, Rice Lake Township. He developed a good place, worked hard to acquire success, and there established the foundation of his future fortunes. In 1881 he moved to the city of Rice Lake, established himself in the mercantile business, and soon became one of the leading business men of the county. He sold the establishment in 1906, and retired. Busy as he was with his personal and business affairs, he found time for public work, and was a member of the town board five years and a member of the city council for two years. He also served on various committees and delegations at various times. He died Feb. 8, 1908, and in his passing the county lost a valued citizen. Mr. Demers was married in Canada, Feb. 27, 1865, to Mary Derosier, and this union has been blessed with five children: Wilfred A. is cashier of the First National Bank at Rice Lake. Samuel is in Seattle, Wash. Joseph J. is a practicing physician of Pompey's Pillar, Montana. Clara is the widow of J. P. Morneau, and lives in Appleton, Wis. Laura is the wife of J. H. Wilz, cashier of the Citizens Bank of Rice Lake. Wilfred A. Demers, financier, agriculturist, former county and city official, former member of the selective draft board, and present cashier of the First National Bank of Rice Lake, was born in the Province of Quebec, Canada, Nov. 17, 1865, son of Frederick I. and Mary (Derosier) Demers, who brought him to the States in 1870 and after a year in Menomonie, this state, came to Barron County. Wilfred A. was reared on a homestead in Rice Lake Township, and there attended the district schools. He was sixteen years old when his family moved to Rice Lake, and here he continued his schooling, spending his spare time in working with his father in his store, and thus learning the principles of business life. After he left school he worked two years for the Omaha Railroad at Rice Lake. Then he became a clerk in his father's store. In the fall of 1898 he was elected county treasurer, and served for four years, making his home at Barron. Upon his retirement he continued in the court house for a while as assistant to the county treasurer. Afterward he resumed his employment with his father. He entered upon his banking career Nov. 1, 1907, as assistant cashier of the First National Bank at Rice Lake. His hard work and ability, as well as the confidence in which he is held in the community, at once became important factors in the life of the bank, and on Jan. 1, 1914, he was elevated to his present position. Reared as he was on a farm, he has always been interested in agriculture, and he makes a hobby of his fine place of 400 acres in Rice Lake Township, where he breeds full-blooded Holstein-Freisian cattle for dairy purposes. In addition to this he is the owner of several residences and business buildings in Rice Lake City. His public office holding has not been confined to the court house, for in the city as well, he has done excellent service. He has been city clerk and city treasurer, and during his term as alderman was one of the prime movers in installing the present adequate sewage system. During the war he was fearless and just as a member of the selective draft board, and also headed a number of Liberty Loan and War Fund drives. All in all he is a broad minded man of intelligence and ability, who has the best good of the community at heart, and who, in acquiring his own success, has not been unmindful of others. Fraternally he is a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Forestors. Mr. Demers was married July 4, 1887, to Delima Santerre, who was born in Canada, Sept. 6, 1868. To this union ten children have been born. Alda is a teacher and lives at home. Odille was for several years librarian at the Carnege Library at Rice Lake. Hazel is accountant for the First National Bank at Rice Lake. Leontine is the wife of Russell Rill of Casper, Wyoming. Raymond is a student in the Rice Lake High School. He was a volunteer in the World War and served with Co. A, 121st Machine Gun Battalion, 32nd Division. Clarian is a student at the State Normal School at Superior. Maurine, Antoinette and Carroll are attending the public schools. One is dead. The family faith is that of the Roman Catholic Church.

--Taken from: History of Barron Co., Wisconsin, H. C.
I am trying to locate WWII Army Veteran Jack L. Demers, or his family if he is no longer living. I have a WWII dog tag that was found in the South Pacific. The information on the tag is as follows:

Jack L. Demers
16176488
His first name may have been John and he used Jack as a nickname? According to his enlistment records, he was born in Michigan in 1923 and enlisted on January 30, 1943 at Camp Grant, IL. I am happy to provide a picture of the tag. I would like to return it to him or his family, free of charge. Any assistance you can give me is greatly appreciated. Please respond to france@wavecable.com Please don't reply to maggiesmemories, since that is my aunt's account and I won't get the message.
Rita or Diana Demers married a Duhaime?

I inherited some very incomplete genealogy. Any help appreciated:

Looking for more information or clarification: I show an Edmund Lucien Duhaime married a Rita Demers on 05 Dec 1938 in Camden South Carolina and later divorced. I show a Mary Susan Duhaime was their daughter.

I also show: Joseph Armand Duhaime married a Rita Demers or Diana Demers in Sherbrooke Quebec but I have no further information. I show a Robert Duhaime was born of this marriage. I'm fairly certain this is the same Joseph Armand Duhaime who died 25 May 1967 in Bridgeport Ct.

Hello,

I am researching the Demers side of the family and was wondering whether or not you would have more information starting with Jacques Demers and Marie Barbe Brosseau. My family is related to Jacques brother Francois-Marie Demers.

Thanks,

Nicole

Thank you for your post Kristin.

My great grandfather's name was Silas Demers(Demarais) born around 1870 in Canada (Quebec). My grandfather was born in Gouvernour, N.Y. I thought that maybe they were visiting relatives when my grand father was born. I found this to be the case when my grandfather's sister was born in Minnesota and thought that might be the situation for my grandfather as well. They lived in Michigan most of their lives. I do not have any information on my great grandfather's parents or siblings except that he may have had a brother named Edward, not sure of the spelling though.

Do you know these people? or know of anyone who does?

This is not my line of Demers, but I found the following:

According to Rene Jette's Dictionnaire genealogique des familles du Quebec (page 326), Anne Demers was the daughter of Jean Baptiste Demers (s/o Andre Dumay and Anne Chefdeville) and Cunegonda Masta (d/o Mathurin Masta and Antoinette Eloy) who married on 25 February 1686.

Mathurin Masta's occupation was "maitre taillandier" and he died 25 Oct. 1690 at the Hotel Dieu, Quebec. Antoinette Eloy remarried in 1696 to Joseph Damournay.

Regards,
Shari Strahan

1927 photograph of Juliette Demers and adult woman, 1927

While shopping a flea market today, I came across a portrait of a young teenage girl with an adult woman. This was a posed picture and not a candid shot.

I can't remember precisely what was written on the back, but it identified the girl as 13 years old with a date of July, 1927. I'm pretty sure it was 1927--the last digit was a little hard to read. The location was Sandpoint, Idaho. I've come census records which would indicate that a Juliette Demers, born around 1914, was the adopted daughter of Joseph and Madeline Demers.

The person selling it is asking $3. If someone would like for me to facilitate acquiring this photograph, please contact me. I could probably get a picture of it to send using my cell phone. I think it's so sad when pictures get away from a family.

Have a family of them in Ogdensburg which is not too far away from Gouvernour. Paul married to Delphine Gareau(Joseph and Louise Monette) with children Mary, born about 1871 and Edourd, not sure of birth date for him.

Not sure this will help, but you just never know !
Kristin

Hi again, ok do not know just how far you are into genealogy, but just in case you did not know this all males were baptized with the first name of Joseph and the females with Marie, so most likely Silas was a nickname or middle name. Kind of hard to think Silas as a very French name ? There are a few more Demers in the St Lawrence Co area mostly though in Ogdensburg.
A good website to check for St Lawrence Co info is http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~stlawgen/i...
There is not a lot of information on Gouvernour which is the county it is located in though. Might interest you and maybe help. Some of the other ways of spelling Demers there were Demars, Demar, Demarse.
I actually am looking for the Gareau family of that county but their daughter Delphine married Paul Demers in Ottawa in 1864 and moved to Ogdensburg about 1865/66, so that is how I know the name. You could post to the forum located on the web page, I know there are a couple of other Demers researchers on there.

Sorry I could not be of more help
Kristin
