I am researching the polly line of Timothy demonbreun and came across this post. I have not read the book by whitehead and was getting alot of information from an article in the Tennessean, which I now think is based on the book. I am interested in your theories about the parentage of Felix, I haven't researched this line obivously very well. I am related to Charles Cagle. I have tons of information on him. I would appreciate anymore thoughts about this subject, since it has been four years, maybe its all solved, let me know! LOL

I am back again researching the Cagle line, I was sent pictures of Franklin Bennett and Willie pearl that descended from Charles Cagle and Polly Demonbreun. I also aquired an article about Jacques Timothy Demonbreun, from the Nashville Tennessean dated May 26 1985. If anyone has info or pictures I would appreciate it.

I am Jerry W. Cook, 3420 Highway 64-East, Wartrace, Tn. 37183 and I am the great grandson of John F. Demonbreun (1841-1904) who is the youngest brother to Sarah W. (Demonbreun) Hughes Kinnard. My mother who died in 2007 is Minnie Eva (Demonbreun) Cook Anderson who was born in 1917 and was a granddaugher to John F. Demonbreun. Back in 2003 I had located Sarah W. Demonbreun and her brother James T. Demumber (1838-1920) in Texas and I found Sarah's grave on the Internet but it did not give her birth or year of death. It only gave the months. Do you have these dates? Sarah has about 3 children buried in the old Demonbreun family cemetery near College Grove, but not all listed by names, except M. A. Hughes. Archilaus Hughes died about 1859, don't know if in Tenn. or Texas, but Sarah and James went to Texas about this time. Sarah W. Demonbreun did marry William E.Kinnard. Her Hughes children listed in Tenn. were Mary born c. 1848, M. A. born c. 1850, Lillie born c. 1855, James born c. 1856 and Joe Hughes born c. 1858. Some of these may be in the Demonbreun cemetery in Williamson Co. Where is Joseph M. and Mary Leticia (Hughes) Watts buried? Thanks, Jerry W. Cook---your Tennessee Cousin.

Descendants of William Demonbreun from Williamson County TN to TX

I am a descendant of WILLIAM DEMONBREUN through his daughter Sarah DEMONBREUN (DEMUMBER/DEMOMBER)Sara or Sarah married Archelaus HUGHES or HUGHS on 18 Oct 1846 in Williamson Co.Tennessee. Arch and Sarah had a daughter Mary Leticia HUGHES brn 1847, a son Joseph Alexander HUGHES born 1858 and a daughter Sarah Archer HUGHES born 1854. I am the great great grandaughter of Mary Leticia HUGHES. Mary Hughes, her mother Sarah Demonbreun and and other members of the Hughes family can be found in the 1860 US census living with William Demonbreun and his wife Nancy in Collage Grove, Williamson County TN. Archileus is not with them. Sometime in 1860 or shortly thereafter Mary L Hughes, migrates to Texas and married Joseph M Watts born 1838 in Florida. They originally settled in Johnson County TX in the Grandview area and are enumerated in the 1870-1880 US census in Johnson County TX. Also living in the area in 1870 and later is Sarah Demonbreun (Demumber)s brother James T Demumber born 17 Sept 1738 in Williamson County TN. His death certificate says his father is William Deumomber and his mother is Mary A Patton. I believe Sarah Demumber came to TX with her brother and other members of the Hughes party. There is a marriage record of a MRS Sarah Hughes and W.E Kennard in Johnson County TX. Aughes came first to Texas to find a home for his family. That is why he is not in the 1860 Williamson County TN census with the other family members. I believe he died shortly after that and I believe he is buried the the Hughes/ Watts cemetery in Grandview,Johnson County TX, There are no dates on the headtone for Archilus Hughes but everyone else buried there has a connection to ary L Hughes Watts (there are only eight graves in this cemetery) All Hughes buried here are in the 1860 US Census in Williamson County TN and birthdates correlate. Also buried here is Sarah W Kennard. Wife of W.E. Kennard whom I believe to be Sarah Demomber Hughes Kennard. Buried here other that Hughes, are children of Mary L Hughrs Watts and Jospeh M Watts. The death certificate for Mary L Watts states her fathers name is Arch Hughes and her Mother is Sarah Demomber.

I posted this hoping to get a lot of response too see if anyone has some proof of his mother. So far you are the second to respond. I have him born abt 1789 because of census date but by our oral family history, Elizabth is not his mother.
I have a grandfather whos date of birth by baptism records is in Aug 1839 and his age floats all over the place on every census after he leaves his parents home. even 1900 census says Jun 1844 !! TUBS of ancestors whos ages are incorrect on census materials so I don't trust that date either. I just would like to hear some good sound argument for his birth mother. Most of it leans away from Elizabeth...but then there is the census!!!
??? Amy
Thanks for responding. There is s lady who is working on the angle Felix's father is Tumothy born 1770. She is trying to search every where Pelis (I have also seen phlix) was. The age on census has made it a no brainer to me except for the "indian capture tales". I descend from Mary who married Wiliam Age. She never lived more than 50 feet from her father most of her life. He lived near to nd married most of his grandchildren and they all heard the story. Thats the part that I have the problem with. The story is "I had a grandmother captured by indians who returned to find grandpa had taken another wife." If Elizabeth were his mother the story would be "my grandfathers wife was presumed dead and we were all born and his first wife came back from the dead and now he had two wives."
They lived on top of each other for four generations and it seems impossible to me that they had thier grandmothers confused. The story had to come to them from Felix, who by all accounts was an honest fellow. So he has to be the son of Timothy or most likely the grandson ??
In late 1870's my 2nd grandmother Lucy Trout Farrell started genalogy work on the familys. Her son wrote my grandfather in 1952 requesting his family updates. She had many lines back to 1500's. I have spent 18 years looking for a living descendent who might have these records and just two weeks ago was contacted by her grand daughter in her late 80's who informed me the records were burned with the exception of one line ( not conected to Felix).
This is so frustrating!!
Amy

I am seeking information on Joseph Demonbreun who was the son of John Felix Demonbreun and Sarah Hughart born 1850. His 1/2 brother Samuel Thomas Demonbreun wrote to Dr. Provine, a noted historian, that Joseph was the family historian, With all the confusion of who the parents are of Felix Demonbreun and Mary Ann Cagle I would think that his information would be the most accurate. Are there any of his descendant out there who knows the answer???

Nancy Demonbreun - Joseph Binkley

Nancy Demonbreun married Joseph Binkley on 8 Jan. 1862 in Cheatham Co., TN. It has been stated by some that John B. Demonbreun was her father. However, census records in 1850 and 1860 indicate that her father may have been William Demonbreun born about 1816. [Was he John B.'s son?] Nancy Demonbreun Binkley's death certificate shows her father's name as Bill.

Looking For Demonbreuns From Tennessee

Hi, my name is Shirley Ann Demonbreun. I am an African American restauranteur from Louisville, KY. My father's name was Rev. William Allen Demonbreun who lived in Columbia, TN. My mother's name was Edna Hendricks who lived in Nashville, TN. I was born in Brentwood, TN. My actual birthdate is unknown to me. I was born between 1936 and 1940 during the month of December. My father's brother's name was John D. Demonbreun. His mother's name was Elsie Demonbreun (she passed away in Detroit). My father was a preacher and he owned a drycleaners and laundromat. He always told me that we had relatives who were caucasian. I am always anxious to meet new relatives. Please drop me a line if you have made a connection.

Thank You, Sherrie

Sherrie, I would like to thank you for making this connection with me. I was so excited upon reading your message that I called two of my daughters and two of my grandchildren the very same night! --at 1 a.m.!! Gee, I don't know where to go from here. I have already ordered my grandmother's (Elsie Demonbreun) birth certificate. Elsie's mother was Hattie Demonbreun and she lived and died on Walnut Street in Louisville, KY. The big question now is: Which Demonbreuns should I trace -- the Kentucky Demonbreuns or the Tennessee Demonbreuns? You stated in your message -- which I have probably read about a dozen times -- the "the old man" Timothe definitely brought the Demonbreun name to Tennessee, but did he bring the name to America? Are the Kentucky Demonbreuns decendants of him or are they decendants of one of his uncles? For clarity sake -- in my mind's eye -- are you saying that anyone in America with the Demonbreun surname -- without a doubt -- is a decendant of Timothe and his uncles? Please tell me more!!

Sherrie, I guess the first rule in tracing your roots is: DON'T BE SURPRISED IF... Like, don't be surprised if your great grandmother's name is Hattie Demumbren, but her death certificate indicates that her father is Lose Fleming and her mother is Sach German, according to her daughter (my grandmother) Elsie Demumbren, the informant for the death certificate. Hattie was born in 1879 in Tennessee and died in 1958 in Louisville, KY, of breast cancer. Now, I have just received my father's SSN application dated August 25, 1937. His name was Rev. William Allen Demonbreun, born in College Grove, Tennessee, Oct. 5, 1917 (according to SSA Death Index) or Oct. 19, 1915 (according to his SSN application). On this application, William states that his name is William Demumbrne and his father is John Demumbrne and his mother is Elsie Smith! His SSN on this application matches the one I got from the SSA Death Index. My mother listed her married name as Edna Demumbren on her SSN application on Jan. 15, 1947. HELP!!! How did Hattie get this surname if neither of her parents have this surname? Could Elsie just be referring to Hattie's mother's origins rather then her name when she indicated Sach's last name as "German"? How can it be that William's father is a Demonbreun if his mother was born a Demonbreun, as well? Is this a case of incest or is this John Demonbreun my bridge to the caucasian Demonbreuns? Could he have possibly sired my father, my grandmother and my great grandmother? My, my, my!!

Thanks, Sherrie, for stopping me from jumping! I feel like the more I learn about my family, the less I know. At any rate, I am an only child. My parents were William Allen Demonbreun and Edna Hendricks. My birth was never record in the public records, but I believe I was born in Franklin, TN around 1937-1940ish.

My father, William Allen Demonbreun, was born Oct. 5, 1917 (SSDI) or Oct. 19, 1915 (SSN) in College Grove, TN. He died in July 1990 in Columbia, TN (Maury Co.). He had two brothers -- John D. Demonbreun and George Demonbreun.

According to his SSN application, his parents were John Demumbrne and Elsie Smith.

I have lived my whole life thinking that Elsie's maiden name was Demonbreun, partly because her mother's name was Hattie Demumbren. So it was a shock to read my father's SSN application where he indicated that his mother's maiden name was Smith. Elsie had -- I believe -- one brother.

Hattie Demumbren was born in 1879 in Tennessee and died in 1958 in Louisville, KY. Her parents listed on her death certificate were Löse Fleming and Sach German.

That's all the information I have on my Demonbreuns. I hope you can help me figure this out.

Terry, I may be wrong since I am not "up" on the line as it comes from Tim I and Elizabeth Bennett; however I believe that the "Cagle" comes into the line with the marriage of Felix Demonbreun to Mary Ann Cagle..it is believed that Felix is the one of the children from the union between Tim I and Elizabeth...As for Mary Polly Demonbreun..I believe that she is also a daughter born to Tim I and Elizabeth...If you want to get back with me..I will look it up for you..Ronnie Richardson has some good information on this line.
Sherrie Wallace

As most, I tend not to believe everything I read either, but I lean towards that date because of both 1840 and 1850 census records. Amazingly, I was looking at the 1840 census records again yesterday, and it hit me that on the one page of the census where Felix appears is several of my ancestors. I knew that families lived close to each other, and I had looked at the page before, but the "light" didn't go on till yesterday. On the page is Felix, his daughter's family, Ellen Elizabeth, who married Matthew Dulin (Doolin). The family of Able Hopper, who's son eventually married Sarah Dulin (daughter of Ellen Elizabeth). Sarah Dulin (Felix's granddaughter) and Robert C Hopper were my great-grandparents. There were also Estes's whose daughter married Able Hopper.
I felt at awe that there was so many of my ancestors on one page. My belief is that the census is correct. I still believe that Elizabeth was his mother until proven to me otherwise. His second daughter was named Elizabeth not Therese or Marguerite. It is probably not a good reason, but I find it hard to believe that he would name a child after his father's mistress, if she wasn't his mother. However, I do have an open mind, it could have been just a name they liked. : )

Margie
Hi my husbands line is Demonbruen/ Demunbrun. The name was origonally Boucher..De..Mont..Bruien..was a title given by the king of France to Pierre Boucher when he left France in the 16th century to travel to Quebec Canada. There he started his own town..Boucherville...still there. Over time..not sure how many years..people called him by his title..De Mont
Bruien...and over time it turned into Demonbruen or Demunbrun. Timothy Boucher Demunbrun Pierre's great grandson, was credited with being the first settler of Nashville, Tn. They are supposed to have a monument for him..I know they have a street named for him. I have pretty much on the Demunbruns and the Bouchers. You can e-mail me @ pstarling@tampabay.rr.com Priscilla

I am Descendibg from Charles W. Farrell b.17 Feb 1828 s/o Gabriel Ferrell and first wife Elizabeth McCombs and his wife Eliza Ann Jane Age b. 16 Jul 1827 d/o William Age and Mary Ann Demonbreun.
Felix married several of these children and they were a very close family until they died. I am the first person to research the lines from this group of children. No one ever belonged to a Demonbreun society or read articles about them. All we have are the family stories passed down from Felix and Mary Ann . Eliza was 22 years old when her mother died and 42 when her grandfather died..We all know the storys of why these children left Kentucky and we all know the story of Mary Anns grandmother being captured by and returning from the indians and none of us ever heard of Elizabeth Hensley Bennett .
Marie Louise Bennett Demonbreun was born 28 Jan 1789 the same year you all attribute Felix's birth to her.
I know Kentucky was the hemp growing capitol of the country at that time but I do not believe Felix told his children and grand children the story of his mothers trials in confusion after a smoke...

Stickin up for Felix...Amy
Demonbreun; DeMontbrun

I am tracing my ancestry back to my 7th Great Grandfather, Jacques Timothe Boucher Demonbreun. I live in Nashville TN and we have a Demonbreun Historical Society. I located several books on Timothe and his descendants. I didn't get to finish reading them or researching them very good. They are for Lib. Use only and I only had about 2 hours to work on it. If you have someone you are looking for I maybe able to help. Most of the information in these desecedant books are verifed. There is one "paper" book - what I mean, it was paper published by a Demonbreun on the life of Timothe Demonbreun. It has information in it that I've never seen or read before. Again, I didn't get to finish reading it, but it seems that Timothe's wife, Therese and a son Timothe Felix were believe captured by Indians. I had never read that before. I'm not sure how creditable this is, but most of it falls in line with everthing else.
I look forward to doing more research and posting information as needed.
My email is cburch@lifeway.com. I can't promise immediate results, but I will try to get your information to you as soon as possible.

Pierre Boucher was the Commanding Officer of Fort at Trois-Rivieres (Three-Rivers), Canada 1651 – 1652 (subsequently the Governor: 1653 - 1667). He had a wide-spread reputation of honesty, ability, courage, and worth.

He was Ennobled (Titled) by King Louis XIV of France: "Seigneur" (Lord) - he was the first man (and family) ennobled in Canada. He added ‘De Montbrun’ (Lord of Brown Mountain) to his name. His letters of nobility, dated 1661, were renewed in 1707
Amy, Debbie, and others:

Thank you for your comments about Kathryn Demonbreun Whitefort's "Genealogy and History." I would be interested in learning about any other inconsistencies you noticed.

Have you read Frank Collier's Genealogy? He comments on similar details: "There is a Demonbreun Society that has much information on the ancestors and descendents of Timothe. (Many new pieces of information have been unearther since Ms, Whitefort wrote her book that have changed some of the details she espouses.)"

see www.frankcollier.org/html/nti00181.htm

Help open a Demonbreun Board at GenForum

There is no Demonbreun Board for posts at GenForum. We need to get everyone to go to the GenForum site and follow the instructions on how to get a new surname board opened up. There is no reason that a surname as famous (or infamous) as ours NOT to have a message board at the GenForum site. If enough of us make the request they will open it up for us. GenForum is a very popular site and could be helpful to all of us "cousins". I am from Timothy Demonbreun III who married Margaret Foster (YES!***I have the marriage license!). Their daughter Christine married Gustavus H Browning who was my great great grandfather. They lived in and are buried in Robertson County TN.
