I think your Anna also appears in records as Amy/Ammie/and Annie. She was b. Aimie Ellsworth, Oct 1788 in NY and d. Oct 1891 in Woodland, and is buried in Woodland Cemetery. She m. (probably about 1812/13, based on her oldest child's birth) to Peter Demond, b. ca. 1785 in Kingston, Ulster Co., NY. the son of Peter and Maria (Eckert) Demond. There were at least six children, of whom I've documented four.
You can contact me at rcsnyder2 AT earthlink DOT net. Ignore my spamblocker... I'll get your message.

There are a lot of Demond's buried in the woodland cemetery just south of woodland MI. I have just started to do our family tree and have a lot of stuff to go through I have inherited both my grandmother and great grandmother's family papers. I am a descendant of the Demond's also. Anna Demond died October 22, 1891 aged 105 years. Some where I have the pamphlet from her funeral when I locate it I will see if it has additional information on it.

Since I did this first post, I've established a fair amount of information on the Demond Family of Barry County, Michigan... especially those who lived in Woodland and Castlton Townships. Peter Demond's wife was Zylpha Townsend. Peter might have been a twin to brother George, both born in 1814 in NY. George Married Nancy Putnam. The third brother, James, married Dorothy/Dolly Miller. I've abstracted much of this from death records for the next generation from each of them. George, Peter, and James were the sons of Adam and Aimie Ellsworth Demond (abstracted from George's death record, which is clean and easy). Adam appears to have died before 1850 (the family arrived in Barry County between 1845-1850). Now I'm looking for background on Adam and Amie/Amy/Anna/Emma (those given names all appear in the records, but I'm certain they're the same person). Can anyone fill in more blanks for me. I hope to print a pretty comprehensive genealogy on the Barry County Demonds in the very near future.

I believe I can help you with this family if you haven't already gotten information. James Demond was b. about 1821 in New York. He m. about 1841, to Dorothy/Dorotha/Dolly Miller, and they had 12 children. Their son William was b. 5 Mar 1843 and d. 11 Mar 1932 (according to records in the Woodland Memorial Cemetery in Castleton Twp.. James was one of what appear to be five children of Adam and Aimie/Amy (Ellsworth) Demond. I suspect Adam is the son of the immigrant, Peter Demund who settled in the Hudson Valley. Records show this Peter had a son, Adam, b. 1786, who is the right age to be the husband of Amy. You can contact me directly at rcsnyder2 at earthlink.net

I've been working on the line of Peter and Zilpha (Townsend) Demond for some time now. They appear to have come from Ontario Co., NY about 1849 or 1850, and they first settled in Woodland Twp., Barry Co., MI. Peter d. in 1852 and is buried in the Woodland Memorial Park. Zilpha d. 1893, and is buried with Peter. Three sons: James, William and David. I think Peter may have been one of three brothers who came from NY about the same time: Peter, b. ca. 1814, George, b. ca. 1820, and James, b. ca. 1821. All lived in Woodland and Castleton Townships in Barry Co. Does anyone have information on Peter's parentage?

Bob: Thanks for the information, my research the past couple of years has been time restrained but hope to get back at it. I live in Saugatuck and spent my early years in Battle Creek. I knew a lot of DeMond's at that time, you are correct James was from GG grand and his son Willaim was my G grand. I have a fair amount of information on Willaims family, his children were Carrie, Henry, Rosa, Frank,Viola, William, Guy, Clarence, and Elmer, my Grand father.

Two things I hope to accomplish sometime is to take the James & Dorothy DeMond family back further. I only know they came from New York. I do have somewhere info on the area of NewYork, Williams civil war papers which I have originals show his records were lost in a court house fire in N. Y.

The 2nd thing is to trace the Menary family. Willaim married Esther Menary apparently a neighbor in Woodland.

Got to get to the business--but thanks so much for the contact

Gary DeMond

Hi again, Gary, I hit the wrong key and sent an incomplete message, so I'll try again. I have found the following in the US Census 1860 for Barry Co., Woodland Twp., Dwelling 1429, Visit 1333, p. 801:

James Demund, 39, NY
Dorothy Demund, 40, NY
Salome Demund, 18, NY
William Demund, 17, NY
Henry Demund, 16, NY
Esther Demund, 15, NY
Richard Demund, 13, NY
Franklin Demund 11, MI
Caroline M. Demund, 9, MI
Emma L. Demund, 7, MI
Margaret Demund, 6, MI
Otis Demund, 5, MI
George Demund, 4, MI
Lewis Demund, 3, MI

I have to assume that this is your family. Just two houses up the road: Dwelling 1427, Visit 1331, is George Demond, age 40, b. NY, with his wife Nancy and six children: Charles, Emma J., Richard, George, Abby, and John.

A few houses later, Dwelling 1440, Visit 1344, I have Zeylphia, age 56, b. NY, with three sons: James, 19, William, 17, and David 15, all b. NY. Also in that household is Amy Demond, age 60, b. PA.

Don't know how helpful this might be, but you can do with it what you will.

Bob Snyder
