Rachel DeMoss Marriage to James Reynolds - 1st Marriage License in Hendricks County IN

James and Rachel were married Nov. 17, 1824. You can find this online by searching Google Books for the 1885 History of Hendricks County, Indiana. James and Rachel traveled with the Reynolds and Drurys to become the 1st settlers of Mercer County, IL, and among the 1st of Rock Island County, IL. They are buried in Drury/Reynolds Cemetery, Rock Island County, IL.

Also buried there is a Peter DeMosse, born 23 Feb, 1816. He is buried near the flagpole, so was obviously an important citizen.

We would like to know more about this Peter (Cousin of Rachel?), and more about the relationship between the DeMoss and Reynolds families in Indiana and previously.

Can you help?
Obituary Rhoda J. Graves DeMoss (1841-1910) wife of Thomas DeMoss, Livingston County, Illinois

Source: The Blade, local newspaper in Fairbury, Livingston, IL
OBITUARY - The Blade, Friday, February 25, 1910
Mrs. Thomas DeMoss
Mrs. Thomas DeMoss, who for a period of 52 years has been a respected resident of Avoca township, passed to her rest on Monday, after a brief illness. Her death is mourned by a large number of old friends and neighbors among whom she had resided for over a half century.
Rhoda Jane Graves was born on July 30, 1841, in Renseller county, N.Y. She came to Illinois with her parents in 1852, settling first in Waukegan county. In 1858 they removed to Livingston county, settling in Avoca township. There was at that time quite a settlement in that township. Nov. 30, 1860 she was united in marriage to Thomas DeMoss and they settled on the home farm, north of Fairbury, where she resided continually until death, a period of over 49 years. Her age at the time of her death was 63 years, 6 months, 21 days.
Besides her aged husband she leaves eight children: Mrs. M.M. Pearson, Mrs. Dolph Skinner and Wallace DeMoss of Fairbury; Mrs. Nate Wilson, of Kempton, Ind.; Mrs. Wm Scott and Mrs. Daniel Harding of Pontiac; Mrs. Emery LaBeau of Kankakee and Orin DeMoss of Cullom. Besides her children she leaves 29 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, three brothers and one sister, Mrs. John Velley, and J.J. Velley, and J.B. Graves of Fairbury, and John and Horace Graves of Neosho Falls, Kan.
The deceased was a woman of kindly disposition, a loving wife and mother, and a neighbor ever ready to assist those in need. She united with the Methodist Episcopal church in 1886, and lived the life of a Christian until her Savior called her home. The husband and children have the sympathy of all in their irreparable loss.
The funeral services were held at the family home in Avoca township Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 10 o'clock a.m.
Now that I have more time again for genealogy, the confusion between James and Jonas comes from the fact that although, Samuel Upton, Mary Ann's father lists her husband as Jonas Demoss in his will, the copy of the marriage record I received from Monongalia County, lists his name as James. However, in both the marriage record and her father's will, her name is listed as Mary Ann, not Mary Jane. Since her mother's name was also Mary Ann, this would make sense. I have been unable to find the death date for Mary Ann, so any help would be appreciated.

Hello, I am still confused (nothing new)!!! On the death cert.for William Virgil DEMOSS (dod was 12 March 1957) they have his birth date and place as 27 Sept 1895 in Topeka KS. (son of J.F. and Jessie (Dittus)). His usual residence was; South Fork, Howell, MO. He is listed as being a ret. Hospital Attendant and farmer. The informant is a Mrs Pearl DeMoss.

I am still unsure if this was/was not Letha's husband. The marriage record list their marriage as being 05/27/1926. The 1927-1928 Polk city directory of Topeka list a Letha and W.V. Demoss as working and living on the grounds of the Kansas State Hospital, he as a cook and her as a corp (no idea what that means). The 1931 directory lists WV as a gdnr(gardener) but no Letha, she could have been missed or she could have gone somewhere else by then.

Could Letha (Hansher) MAGEE been a 2nd wife to W.V.? Anyone have an idea who Pearl Demoss was? Has anyone found WV DeMoss in the 1930's census?
Any thoughts, ideas or information would be very welcomed...Brenda

I don't have your family in my tree, but I have seen the tree you are investigating in Ancestry. You might check there. Also, Familysearch.org (free) shows an Ida May DeMoss in Fulton County IL. The Illinois statewide marriage database doesn't show any Flynn/Demoss marriages, although the name groom's name Flynn does show up twice for marriages to women with first names Ida May. Sorry not to help, but hope these tiny leads may give some assistance.

While visiting Adams County, IL in 2002 I stopped in every cemetery I could find and took pictures of headstones with familiar names (Akers, Butts, Hussong, Rockenfield, Sparks). I have DeMoss folks in my tree, so took a nice photo of the stone for J. Edward DeMoss (9-7-1858 to 2-11-1909) and Ida E. (his wife) 12-22-1859 to 1-24-1930. Seems like this DeMoss couple should be in my family, but I can't fit them in. Do any of you have them in your family?

Let me try this "theodore.s.weaver at us dot army dot mil"

Confusion among genealogists? Hard to imagine. Once something in error gets into print, it is like trying to breed out a bad recessive gene.

A few years back I got into the Taylor County Court records and went through the old court cases one at a time over about four or five years (week at a time). 90% was not indexed. I got a lot of good Dr. Thorn stuff and a number of pieces on Jonas DeMos - including receipts written by him. I scanned it. If I can get your contact info, I can send you some.

Now I am a mobilized reservist (20 months so far). Not a lot of time to work on this. Right now I spend a bit of time here and there indexing and archiving digitally.

Send me an email.

Weav

I am puzzled by your request. I have some information on the DeMoss history from various sources that is not well organized at this point in time. A brief review of my records makes me think that your James S. DeMoss may well be Jonas S. DeMoss born 2/12/1812 and died 7/12/1852. His wife is listed as Mary Jane Upton. Jonas is my Great, Great, Grandfather. Samuel Upton DeMoss is my Great Grandfather and William Edgar DeMoss is my Grandfather. Samuel Everett DeMoss is my father. Hope this helps!

I believe the Virgil W., married to Bess, is the one who is a brother to my husband's grandfather, Glenn. They are on the 1900 Census taken in Pueblo, CO. Virgil's BD is listed as September, 1895, and being born in KS. All of the 3 children before Glenn were born in KS. Glenn was born in Pueblo. Their parents were James Finley & Jesse Rebecca. I hope you find your line. I was in the Topeka City Library last summer, briefly, and was able to browse the Geneology section. I would suspect that all of the DeMoss' of that era were related somehow. If you connect the dots, I would be greatly interested. Thanks! Dee

James Finley DeMoss was my husband's great grandfather. He was married to Jesse Rebecca Dittus, daughter of Fredrick & Mary Ludington, daughter of William & Jane Ludington. James & Jesse had Lucella, Olivetta, Virgil & Glenn (my husband's grandfather.) I have a 1900 Census with this family from Pueblo, Colorado. I know Glenn was born in Pueblo, but I do not know about the other children. Richard's Aunt Lu told me that her mother, Jesse, is buried in the Topeka cemetary. Jesse is also listed on Glenn's Railroad Retirement papers, which I have, as being his mother. There has been some confusion as to whether Liva was his mother or not. She was not. I have a 1920 census from Pawnee County, Kansas, that lists James F. & Liva. I would be VERY interested in any information that anyone might have on Olivetta & Virgil (if he IS William Virgil, I have not found that.) I am glad to know that James F. may have died in Kansas City, MO. That might explain why I can't find him in Kansas records. Aunt Lu ended up in the Chicago area, Dearborn, I believe, and was married to Fred Dean. I can find no records of her from there. Unfortunately, I did not do geneology research when these people were alive. If I give further information, I would be glad to. I have more at home. Sincerely, Dee

I'm very interested in the DeMoss family. Although this J. Edward and Ida DeMoss are not the ones I am looking for.
You mentioned having DeMoss in your family so I am hoping maybe you can help me.
I am looking for info for Edmond/Edward Demoss who was born in 1872 in Illinois to Samuel and Lucinda Ann (Flynn) DeMoss. He married at least twice - lst to Mary Ettie Lawson and then to Dicey Mann in 1902. I believe that Edmond and Mary Ettie had a daughter, Ida Mae who was born in 1891. Ida md a "Flynn" and had several children? Can you help? Looking forward to your reply.
Thanks so much.
Sandra
I am not sure about this or not. But my gg grand father is James "Ed" DeMoss. He was born in Knox County in 1866 & had 6 children with Mary Holder-Demoss. He was hit by a train in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana in 1917 & was buried in the Bicknell IOOF (which now is apparently called Bicknell Memorial Cemetery). I believe his father was William Demoss & they way that I have found the info is that William & Elizabeth are both buried in the Bicknell IOOF as well as James's Brother

James S. Demoss and Mary Ann Upton

Need help with establishing the children of James S. Demoss born about 1812 and Mary Ann Upton born 1812 in Monongalia County, Virginia. James and Mary Ann were married 8 August 1833 in Monongalia County. I have a copy of the marriage record. Mary Ann was the daughter of Samuel Upton and Mary Ann Lanham. I believe their two eldest children were William Demoss and Samuel Upton Demoss who married Rebecca Bailey. However, I see some research that says James S. Demoss married a Mary Current. Where there two James S. Demoss in the same area?
Thanks

Ada was one of Lewis and Amanda's children. Red River County, Texas records show Ada DeMoss married R.E. Corbin April 24, 1881. There is no burial record showing anyone with the surname of Corbin buried in Red River County and only Lewis DeMoss is the only one buried in Red River County with that surname. Lewis is buried at Manchester Cemetery. I have no connections to these last names and this is all Iknow.
Hope this was helpful.

Hello, I was just surfing on the web and came across this site. Here is the story they had on it about a DeMoss:

http://coloradoclues.com/scoundrels.htm

DeMOSS, WILLIAM
DE MOSS TRIAL
Accused Will Be Arraigned Today for Killing Giuseppi Cemino.
Rocky Mountain News, 6/10/1895
William DeMoss will be placed on trial in the West Side court this morning for the murder of Giuseppi Cemino, also known as Joe Ross, on the afternoon of Easter Sunday, April 14. Cemino, in company with other Italians, was holding a feast at the home of Vincent Talerico, at Thrity-first and Quincy Streets, North Denver, when DeMoss and four companions came by and mimicked the dancing of the Italians. Cemino and DeMoss had some words together, when DeMoss pulled a 32-caliber revolver and shot him through the heart, eye-witnesses say, without any provocation. Ralph Talbot will defend the accused.
DeMoss, since his arrest and imprisonment in the county jail, has spent most of his time reading or playing checkers with the guards. His conduct has been exemplary, and at no time has he shown a disposition to cause the jail officials any trouble. Regarding his crime and his hopes for the future he has always declined to speak with any person except his brother-in-law and his attorney.

Dee and ldroberts , Thanks for the information!!! I want to be really clear that I have no idea who my WV DeMoss is/was. My Letha (Hansher) Magee married a WV in Osage county KS in 1926. I have no idea why she married in Osage. She was born in Daviess Co., MO. Somehow she ended up in Topeka KS (1916 Topeka City Directory) and married Claud Magee who’s family was from Pawnee County KS. Letha had a son in 1918 Topeka and she was listed with Claud in the 1920 censes and 1921 city directory in Topeka. By 1930 Claud was in CA with a new wife Lillie and the 2 sons he had with Letha. Letha was still in Topeka in 1924 living with her sister and brother-in-law. In 1926 she was in Osage Co., KS (she listed her home as being in Topeka as did WV) getting married and in the Topeka city directory listed by herself as a waiter in “Colonial Lunch” then she disappears. I have absolutely no idea who my WV DeMoss is/was. Both the Virgil’s in Topeka were cooks and both born in KS. and lived in the same general area.
Because of her 2nd husbands initials I started researching any one who had a similar name or initials. Next time I go to Topeka I will look the DeMoss family up in the Topeka Directories to see if there might be some information that might help. I did find information on a Letha Virginia DeMoss that look promising but I am unsure what my Letha’s middle name was, the initial was V.
I do have a WW1 registration for a Virgil W, signed on May 29 1917 Topeka he was married with one child so that leads me to believe this was the one married to Bess. He listed his birth date as Sept., 27, 1895 Topeka. He was a waiter at “Rogers Café”.
Please let me know if any of this information rings any bells, Thanks, Brenda
