John Hunter Denning

I searching for ancestors of my gggrandfather John Hunter Denning (b. abt 1828 in PA and d. 19 Mar 1895 in Mercer County, Illinois and is buried in Bullafo Prairie Cemetarym, Rock Island County, Illinois. He married. Margaret O'Morrow (or O'Mara or O'Maraugh)

John had a brother Joseph A. Denning (b about 1827 in Pennsylvania) He married Jullian A Adams.
Both families lived in the Mercer County- Buffalo Prairie, Rock Island Co., Illinois area from before 1860 until their deaths.

Family history says a (4g)gggggrandfather was scalped by Indians in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
I know the late 1700s were a terrible time for settlers and Indians in the area for many years. And it is no stretch of the imagination to know that "gramps" was so killed.

Ancestry.com Family trees say John Hunter Denning's father and mother were Jacob Twining (from an old Quaker family many generations in the Bucks County area) and Phebe Tucker, also an old established colonial family.

If John Hunter and Joseph A. Denning's dad died, did the Twining famly adopt them? care for them? or their dad?
None of the people I've contacted know why the Twining name is associated with the Denning?
Any ideas, anyone?....anyone?

DENNING / NELSON SC>GA(1850)>AR

I am have been searching my Nelson line and have reached
an impasse. My best hope at this point seems to be to attempt to follow the maternal side in hopes of discovering more information.
My gggrandfather was James L. Nelson and he was married to
Martha A. Denning. After Martha died, James moved to Drew Co., Arkansas with the Jesse Perry family; he married one of Jesse's daughters, Harriet Elizabeth.
I am attempting to determine where James L. was born and
his father's name. From the 1850 census for Henry Co., GA I learned the following:
James L. was born in 1820/21 in SC
Martha A. Denning was born in 1822/23 in SC
Martha's mother C. (Denning) was living with them; she was
born in 1789/90 in SC.
Martha's brother?, William, was living with them; born in SC in 1824/25
M.E. Denning (a sister; or William's wife) was also listed,
born in SC in 1829/30
James and Martha's oldest child, Samuel Lee, was born in SC
on Sep. 25, 1848

Apparently, James and Martha were from South Carolina, they were most probably married there in about 1846/47.

If it is possible to determine information about Martha and her family, then perhaps I will be able to locate my Nelson family nearby.
If you have any information about any of these persons, please let me know. If you could give me someone else to contact, I would be very grateful.

Thank you very much for any assistance.
Regards,
Bill Nelson, Augusta, GA

Need to make adjustments to what little information I do have. John Orcutt from Hume was my great-grandfather Harvey Denning's 1/2 brother. Also, Arthur E. Waite was another 1/2 brother to Harvey. All of these men had the same mother. Additionally, Harvey had one full brother named "Allie" or "Ollie" (Denning). Apparently, Harvey's mother lived in Scio at one point, and she smoked a corn-cob pipe with corn-cake? tobacco. Harvey's father was quite a "traveler" and was rarely if ever seen. Let me know if anyone has a clue to the name of the mother of any of these men. All had heavy residency in the Hume, Belfast and Fillmore area. I believe John Orcutt is buried in the cemetary in Belfast, NY.

Hoping you can help me. My great grandfather was Harvey Leroy Denning, wife was Metta Eliza Hopkins, they had children named Lawrence A., Clarence, Vesta, Burton. I have information from ancestry only up to the draft card of Harvey saying he was born in Whayland, NY? No information as to who his parents were. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. My grandpa (Lawrence) is going to be 90 this year, and doesn't have that great of a memory of the names beyond his parents.

DINNING was born 04 Feb 1810 in Sumner Co., Tennessee two years after William's birth in 1808.

Hope this helps - let me know if you have anything to add.
John Denning
Joseph:

I have the following information in electronic form that I am coping for you below. I have records from the Gallatin TN county records. A chronologist for the Denning family, Michael Denning, keeps up with many of our family history, but his records are manual.

Here is the file I have:

Gallatin TN
November 27th 2001

John Dinning CA 1672-31Dec 1707
Married Margaret Squire on 19 Oct 1693
Son Francis 8Sep1693
George 8Oct1695
Robert 10Sep1696
William 22 Nov1697
Thomas18 Apr1700
John 2Aug1703
Samuel 17July1707

John Dinning was High Sheriff of Londonderry Co Ir from 1699-1701 He MAY (MAY) have been AndrewDinning’s (1730) grandfather

There are 7 sons’s to choose from I don’t believe there were that many Dinning’s in Londonderry. There are also Dinning’s from Oumfriecsshire Co Svcotland.. It is right across the channel and there is a Deinning and a Dinning Heights in Oumfriesshire

Up to 1762 Dinning were living in Londonderry Co Ireland
David Dinning, Jr. Born May 1760 was in the revolutionary war and he had a pension application on Aug 19 1834, In it he states that when he was 18 months old he and his parents came to America and settled in Orange Co NC.

Dasvids’s sister Isabella married Robert Moore his parents came through Philadelphia PA about the same time.

David Jr said his family came to Sumner Co TN in the fall of 1799. Deed records in the early 1800’s prove this as well.

On LDS Microfiche show the following:

John Dinning CA 1672-31Dec 1707
Married Margaret Squire on 19 Oct 1693
Son Francis 8Sep1693
George 8Oct1695
Robert 10Sep1696
William 22 Nov1697
Thomas18 Apr1700
John 2Aug1703
Samuel 17July1707

John Dinning was High Sheriff of Londonderry Co Ir from 1699-1701 He MAY (MAY) have been AndrewDinning’s (1730) grandfather

There are 7 sons’s to choose from I don’t believe there were that many Dinning’s in Londonderry. There are also Dinning’s from Oumfriecsshire Co Svcotland.. It is right across the channel and there is a Deinning and a Dinning Heights in Oumfriesshire.
Hi, Jim--

I'm trying to find info about William S. Denning, born approx. 1808 in VA, who married Eilzabeth Ratcliffe, born
1813 in VA. Children: Priscilla, Isabella, Angeline, Wesley, I think. Do you have info on that branch? Don't
know William S. Death date, or anything else. He just
disappeared after 1860 census, along with Angeline and the son (I think is Wesley, can't be sure). My name is Connie Ritchie, my email is JoCoWaHa@sbcglobal.net if you can help.
Thanks!!!

I am seeking information on my husband's family and have had little success. His father was Richard Patrick Denning, oldest of nine children born to Richard Foster Denning and Edna Cecilia Kubbe. Richard Foster was the son of Edward Denning and Mary Blow. Edward was the son of Edward Denning and Brigid Burns. Any information that you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Newark, NJ). I believe he was married twice and had two children by his first wife, who is unknown to me. The children were Thomas F. (1861 CT, m. Ellen Robinson of Ireland) & Annie E. (1866 NJ). His 2nd. wife was Margaret (1853 NJ) and they had Charles J. (1878 NJ, m. Anna), Ethel M.(1886 NJ), and Grace (1892 NJ).

Any information you can offer would be much appreciated.
Thank you. Jo

I HAVE ALL DENNINGS
One time a black denning emailed about a relative.I had that realtive as a chelsea ma, denning. the birth place was listed as west indies. He did his genetics and has a K haplogroup. at first glance many people will automaticly jump tothe conclusion that the master raped a slave.
this is not necessaraly true.cromwell and britain sold white slave on the streets iof america, austraila and the west indies. trhese were full slaves but white.
they lived and worked with black slaves. Easily they mated and had kids. these kids ran the spectrum from black thru malado to full white and all shade in between.
People take the easiest road to take so they would of blamed it on the rape.
but and this is a big but. The people of chelsea seemed to know this denning. he mixed in like family so either he was full white and they didnt know . or they knew his family.
chelsea has 2500 dennings.Gloucester has about the same. so it is probable they knew family history, they might of known the denning in british prisons
anyways if your a black denning i will extend my clans hand and welcome you to the research. contact me off list at caradoc28@aol.com and i'll get you into our databases
. i bet i already have your people

maybe you can test and seeif you match the K

Hoping you can help me. My g-grandfather was Harvey Leroy Denning. I don't have birth/death dates. I know he had brothers named John, Arthur, and Allie (maybe short for Alfred?), and a sister named Sarah. I have a glimmer of the fact that Harvey's wife's maiden name may have been Orcutt? Not positive but family located in/around western NY area. Both Buffalo area, or southern tier. Fillmore, Hume, etc. Thank you in advance for any light you can shed on this.

The father in this case was Francis DENNING (1849-1878), married to Ellen Elizabeth MAHAN (1847-1923). Their children were John Henry (1870-1952), Amelia Ann (1871-1937), Lucenda Katherine (1872- ), William Francis (1874-1958), Marie Margaret (1875-1962), and Eleanor Elizabeth (1877-1953).

Francis was born about 1849 in Lake County, IL, to John DENNING and Anne FEURY. Siblings included James, Michael, Maria, John Jr. and Joseph.

John Henry DENNING, brother of William Francis, is my great-grandfather.

My name is John S. Patterson. I am the grandson of Sarah Isabelle Denning 1855-1936, Watkins Glen, Schuyler County, New York State. Her father was William Denning as was her grandfather William H. Denning. My family lore says that a slave girl was brought from Antigua to the estate of William Denning in the Hudson Valley. The owner of the estate was a quartermaster for the Continental Army and was elected to office in New York State. He married one Hawkhurst sister and when she died he married another. He was a well known man in Revolutionary times. Supposedly she had children by that William Denning or someone on that estate. There are so many William Dennings associated with this story that it's hard to see straight. But, one William Denning is shown in the 1790 Census as having 2 slaves. Any info?

John Patterson

I am a descendant of Martin Denning born in Alsace Lorraine, France 1721 in the Bavarian region, migrated to Russia, Died in Herzog 1798. This is a German line name originally Denig, i think. I would be really interested in any info on his line of origin. If his parents were transplants or not etc? Any info would be helpful.
Thanks,
Rick Denning

The 1880 census lists William Denning age 5 in Towerville, Crawford, Wisconsin. Mother Ellin L., Brother (John age 10),
sisters Margaret (4), Ellen L (2). No father listed other than that he was born in Ill. On this page there are listed two other Denning families (James and Joseph et al). Also on this page are George and Michael Nevil. Michael was Tressa's father. I found her with the family in Ipswich SD in 1910.
